It seems now that even everyone in the media has come to the same conclusion - Danny F will be out of a job (barring a miracle), the only questions being how and when. There seem to be a few possibilities:
- Coach to the end of the season, then be replaced. There are some obvious problems with this, in terms of supporter and media scrutiny and discontent. However, he has a contract and the club has repeatedly said it would honour that contract. It also means we would probably be in competition with several other clubs for a coach at the end of the season.
- The "Shaw" option, ie finish out the season but the club starts the selection process early. Even though some prospective candidates may be pre-occupied as assisted up to the end of Septemeber, we could at least start sounding them out and starting to sell the club to them. This would be my preference. Danny could coach how he wanted for the rest of the season, throw caution to the wind and coach to win rather than be safe or to save games (even at the expense of being flogged), and keep bringing in young players. This would also satisfy his contract. The question then would be when would we make this decision. Do we do it now or wait till we are mathmatically out of the finals?
- Resign or be sacked now and a caretaker be appointed. This would haver some of the benefits of option 2, in that the caretaker would have nothing to lose (unless they were a genuine contender for the job long term). It would involve contractual problems, as well as the club losing further credibility in the eyes of prospective coaches. It also opens the possibility of doing another "Geishen" ie the caretaker has a successful honeymoon period and is appointed full time. On the flip side, we could do a "Roos" as happened at the Swans. (How ironic if we had a handshake deal with Wallace only for a caretaker to spring the job from him) Another problem would be who would be caretaker? Brittain is the obvious candidate, but would his record end up with us creating history by sacking two coaches mid-season? Flood from Coburg might be an option if we go down this path. I don't know a lot about him, but his reputation seems to be of developing youngsters and Coburg have some early runs on the board.
