- A Big Year in the music industry once again but it just makes you think that when will records be no longer. Downloading songs is a new past-time, especially if it costs you nothing, or if it is advertised in supermarkets and television by ISP's and Apple Ipod doing their bit.
- Now to the top 50. I am a music fan, but not an over fanatic, let's go see band's in concert and hard rocker, no not me, but I could be. I am a stats man, and I always keep my eye on the top 50 week in week out and love my hits, whether rock, rap, pop, gangster, r&b whatever.
What we notice here in the 2005 top 50 is yet again, Australian Idol runners-ups taking some spots. Shannon Noll with a fitting BigCricket title "Come On Aussie, Come On", along with what was a radio station obsessive overplay of what was a good Australian tune "Shine" which finds its way mid way. Anthony Callea, the 2004 runner-up obviously had hits make it, with "Rain" but most importantly, taking the no.1 spot with his major hit "The Prayer". I am not a fan of seeing the Idol's consistently getting no.1 spots, but what can you do, the show is a hit, so it is expected. 2004 saw Shannon Noll no.1 with "What About Me" while 2003, the year of introduction of Australian Idol, saw "Angels Bought Me Here" at no.1 by winner Guy Sebastion.
- Gwen Stefani and the Black Eyed Peas pulled off 3 hits each in the top 50. Gwen's first hit being "What You Waiting For?", then bringing in "Rich Girl" and the catchy "Hollaback Girl" which spent it's debut at no.1, and the Black Eyed Peas with an amazing move. There story is big, getting back in the mix a couple years back with what is one of the biggest and best songs I have like, "Where Is The Love?", but they continue with bringing in "Don't Phunk With My Heart", a highly anticipated song which made no.1 very early, maybe from debut, while "Don't Lie" was the same story, but less effective. The big one though was "My Humps", which had just spent what, 4 weeks in the charts for the year, still in the top 10 as i type, as a new hit still, and this made it to no.44, bettering "Don't Lie"
- New names took the spotlight I thought. The Pussycat Dolls were unlucky not to get no.1, but excluding Idolists, they were no.1 with "Don't Cha", a huge debut. Akon hit it with "Lonely", at no.3 for the year, while Jamster, a mobile phone ringtone company with it's catchy ads and introduction of fictional character the "Crazy Frog", it hit the shelves and debuted at no.1 with "Axel F". Nitty was a big hit with "Nasty Girl", making it at no.8 for the year, while James Blunt hit it with a highly anticipated song "You're Beautiful", which yes, did get repetitive. Even more new names. Australian's, The Veronica's were huge late in the year thanks to MTV for their obsession and advertising, which worked, with their hit "4Ever". Ciara's "1,2 Step" was a follow up of a verdict hit last year, while Daniel Powter had a nice hit "Bad Day" also making the top 20.
- TV Stars Jesse McCartney (Beautiful Soul) and Natalie Basingthwaite (Neighbours, Rogue Traders - Voodoo Child) helped their success.
- Australian's may not have had as much of an influence as last year when Australian Music was at it's peak with much thanks to Idol, Spiderbait and ofcourse Missy Higgins, but their was still plenty. Idol's Anthony Callea, Shannon Noll each had 2 hits in the top 50, while quickly racing in at no.51 was the most recent Kate DeAraugo at no.51 in just 1 out of 52 weeks. Also from Idol inside the top 51-100 were Joel Turner, Casey Donavan and Ricki-Lee, while fall through X-Factor's Random made an appearance in the nineties. Rogue Traders became a solid unit on the music course, The Wrights formed at the time of Tsunami Relief concert early year, which consisted of stars from many Australian rock bands including Jet, Spiderbait, Powderfinger, Grinspoon, The Living End and many more. Missy Higgins had 1 hit in the top 30, while Delta made an appearance along with the already mentioned Veronica's. Ben Lee and Bodyrockers also worth a mention.
- Comebacks of Maria Carey and Backstreet Boys saw them do well, each having several hits, with Maria's best "We Belong Together" at no.16 and Backstreet Boys, formally a pin-up band in the nineties, with their hit "Incomplete" at no.25. Gorillaz also got back on course from an old hit "Clint Eastwood" with two solid hits "Feel Good Inc." and "Dare".
- Suprises for myself. Where was the Foo Fighters??? The debuted at no.1 with "Best of You" and were often there, but not inside the top 100 which does confuse me. Ben Lee's was so high, expecting it to be a few places higher, well, higher than 90 odd. Crazy Frog wasn't no.1, now that is a suprise...and Jessica Simpson's "These Boots are made for Walkin' " re-make for movie "Dukes of Hazzard" was a hit, whislt the movie wasn't (I personally loved the movie). Nickelback's "Photograph", what I regard in my top 10 of 2005 was squeexed into the top 50. Another suprise was Eminem, having 3 hits in a space of no's. 63-73 including "Like Toy Soldiers".
- They Made It in 2004 aswell, There were only a couple. Anthony Callea's The Prayer, which was no.1 was at no.82 in 2004, where Idol finished late December. What ou Waiting For - Gwen Stefani, at no.40 in 2005 was at no.26 in 2004 aswell, BIG HIT. These Kids - Joel Turner was no.8 2004 to no.54 2005.
- Where were they? Outkast was huge in 2003/04 to have no hits, and Britney Spears had 4 big chart hits in 2004, to appear once in 2005. Evanescence, Jamelia, Eamon, Kelis and Anastacia were all in the top 7 of 2004, to each not show ONCE in 2005, as did Limp Bizkit and big 2004 hit band Maroon 5.
