A Melbourne supporter with another 08 draft thread? Are you trying to get Watts bagged out more?

People are going to tear this apart.

My answer: Hurley.

Not much thought put into the thread contents and "Who would you pick" etc is not the best way to get the thread rolling. Next time give your own opinion and add a little information for the players involved so it generates a better discussion. We already have an active thread on the 2008 draft that has good discussion going and your question could be pretty much answered in there.

It will stay open for now and any Jack Watts bashing and off topic discussion etc will see it closed.

You would have to think a player of Hurley quality who could play Centre Half Forward or Centre half back, would win this poll quiet easily.
Very rare to get a player who can play the way he does, in the positions he plays.

This draft is too close and people are still going to vote their own youngsters. Personally if i needed a midfielder i would go Hill. If i wanted a KP i'd go Hurley.
Overall i'd probably go Hurley due to bias and his extremely valuable versatility which for a KP is gold, plus i just love the way he competes in contests, there aren't many players who bring the intensity that he does.

I would of Picked Watts, jks i think Hill, Hurley and Sidebottom are about equal, although im happy Essendon got Hurley. Its the player they needed.

Disclaimer** I think Hurley will be a very good player and I have only seen him on the tv this year, have watched every Bombers game though.

But, shit me a brick, I think he is the laziest player in the Essendon jumper. This season I haven't seen him chase, sprint back to position to run back witht he incoming ball, get on a lead big enough to take an uncontested mark.
It's harsh, but I'm getting angry watching him. Sure, he creates contests in the air and brings the ball to ground - that's great, but he is not taking nearly as many marks as he should be (11 for the season) considering they kick it to him countless times.

Either work harder to make a lead and mark the ball which your midfielders have worked hard to get, or play in the VFL against opponents who you may be able to take a mark on.

A question to Essendon fans who have been to the games this year...
Am I being too harsh?
Is he unfit?
Is he slower than most?

It's just really annoying hearing about this guy all the time by commentators and supporters alike that he will be the best player in the game, yet he doesn't seem to be working nearly as hard enough.

Re: the poll FWIW - Beams - more damaging by foot than all of those players (yes, even Hill) and came 6th in BnF in a premiership side.

Bolded is the key. Watch him live and you'll see that, like the rest of the forwardline, he often runs up outside of the F50 and then sprints back in. You miss these things just watching on the screen. Even on TV you can see that he gets a lot of possessions up outside of the forward 50.

There's a few reasons he doesn't mark as much as he should:
1) a wrist injury which has hampered his confidence in marking (occasionally he mis-times his jumps too, but that should get better with experience)
2) we bomb the ball in, rather than spot up passes
3) he constantly gets scragged off the ball and cannot buy a free kick in the F50 for being held. It is actually getting quite ridiculous.

So yes, you are being too harsh.

Ah k, cheers mate, I'll keep an eye out for him on Monday then.
Sorry about the rant. I do notice he does get held alot, especially when the ball has hit the ground in his vicinity.
He may just need a bit more strength to get rid of his opponents ala Cloke or Dawes.

Like I said in another thread, it's a tough call between Hurley and Hill. I'd go Hurley if pushed, simply cos he's a KPP who can play back or forward. Players like him a rare commodities. That said, Stephen Hill in full flight is a thing of beauty. Runs like a gazelle, raking left foot kick... Probably my favourite (non-Collingwood) player in the comp.

He's not everything he should be in terms of work rate - but you're exaggerating a bit. When he's on he works hard but he probably had 2 quiet quarters v Blues, a quiet quarter v Dogs & so on and when he's not on he drops off (which is not a good trait).
Probably rate him about 6/10 for effort & pressure & positioning whereas a Gumbleton's 8 or 9/10 but only half the presence.

The 11 marks or whatever doesn't really represent how good he's been in the contest. Brought a lot to ground in 1-on-1s and he's played fair chunks of time with 2 on him. Two bung hands doesn't help but he's still been kicking or creating goals out of those contests which is what good players do. So I do think you're being harsh there.
