Who do you think should lead our club into 2009? I believe we shouldn't keep going with the joined captain idea, Bruce and McDonald are not captain material in my eyes, what do you guys think?

well is it me or does the melbourne board not seem overly rapt with that idea? I agree Mclean should be captain but ya never know. I cant think of a secondary option.

I don't think there is a clear cut choice TBH...

prob. out of -

McDonald
Bruce

McLean for captain the year after next if he has a big season...

What about Moloney???
I rate him and he has always been a MFC supporter.
Plus I thought I would chuck up someone a bit different to the popular candidates

I think it needs to be someone who will do it for at least 4 or 5 seasons. The article in todays HS showed that when we have appointed a captain in the past it has been for a decent period of time. In the last 17 years we have had 3 captains - Lyon, Viney & Neitz.

I'm not sure how long Viney was captain for but I think he took over at the end of 96 so I think he was captain for 3 seasons???

Our problem is that the experienced candidates Bruce, Green & McDonald wont be around for another 4 or 5 seasons & there is a huge gap between the next generation of leaders.

I think the best bloke for the job is McLean.
But there are some questions that need to be asked before appointing him. How will he come back from his ankle injury & he still hasn't shown that he can handle a tag week in week out. Those questions along with the added pressure of leading a weak team could be very hard to handle on someone so young & may effect his performance. Not to mention last summers indiscretions.

That said, I think he is still the best bloke for the job. Throw him in at the deep end & hopefully in the not to distant future he will be able to look back on the tough timeshe had at the beginning & savour what should be an exciting period for our club in 3 or 4 seasons.

Looks as if Co-Captains is the go for next year after reading the article in the Sun with Junior and Bruce looking like the likely combination.

Although they were saying that it will be announced before Christmas and there will be a vote next week, I think it was next week can't remember.

In order of likeliness: Junior, Bruce, Brock, Green
Who I want: Brock, Green, Bruce, Junior.

Joint captaincy is lame, it's like worse than primary school footy.

I think the title of 'captain' should be earnt, especially the title of 'Melbourne Football Club Captain', and I don't think Brock has quite earnt it yet. He looks the one player above 21 who could do the job well, but I still wonder if he has a single braincell in his skull.

Because we have such a young list, we need a strong leader to set the right example on and off the field, not some aspiring 14 year old, who gets his kicks doing doughies in his V8 in some suburban carpark...

Its about time he grew up.

From an outsider's point of view, Cameron Bruce would probably be my preference. Shining light in the midfield and never gives up even when his team gets an odd flogging. Media loves him as well.

Brock McLean has the good grunt to him, but after several examples of well publicised unsociable behaviour events off the field, giving him the captaincy to him could have a slightly negative effect on your club.

Just my two cents worth.

Giving Bruce the captaincy would be a step backwards IMO.

If Bailey is serious about a new era, with the youth policy, Brock will be given the mantle. Captaincy is a lot more than looking pretty in front of the camera. I can't remember the last selfless act Bruce did whether it be on or off the field, a good player no doubt and has given us some great service, but Brock has done more in 4 years than Cam has managed in 9.

Green was the only challenger for the throne, but threw it away over the trade period. He can come out now and say he was never going to leave as much as he wants, but facts are he was tossing it up. Would be laughable to think of Brock doing similar. Whilst Greeny was holding out on his contract, Brock was giving 10k back from his.

Helps that Brock is also far and away the best player we have at the moment. Captains win you games of football, Neitz did it on many occasions, I honestly can't recall a recent game where Bruce has pulled us across the line, he is consistent but not uplifting.

Brock.

If he doesn't get it this year, I won't be surprised, but I'll be disappointed.

The article on Brad Green in the Herald Sun made for some good reading. The club would have him high on their list of choices for Captain. Greeny wouldn't be a bad choice I reckon. In fact, anyone one of Junior Mac, Greeny or Cam Bruce would be a good choice. My tip is Cam Bruce.

McLean would love to have had his time again. I have no idea as to what he was thinking . Pity, as we are all the losers for it.
