Here is my starting team for 2009.

B Gram Hudghton Gilbert
HB Blake Maguire Attard
C Dalsanto Hayes Montagna
HF Riewoldt S Fisher Schnieder
F Milne Gwilt X Clarke?

Following King, Baker, Ball
Bench Jones, Armitage, Kosi, R Clarke

Wanting to put in the team but I can't find a spot. - See who is underperforming.
X , Geary, Eddy, Steven
Try at some stage - McEvoy, Allen, Howard, Miles

Depth only - McQualter, Birss, Fiora , C Gardner ( if they are still at the club).

..... and that in itself shows why we are not close to winning a flag. You cannot even go close if thats your best starting 22.

Maguires another overrated dud as well. For all his hype, whats he really EVER done apart from the odd running back in flight taking a grab. Anyways, if thats our best 22 then Ross seriously needs to draft well this year or it's going to be a big slide down the ladder.

Maybe Ross is a super coach, our list looks pretty ordinary excluding around 5 blokes yet he still got us to a prelim. wow!

This years drafts will do very little in 2009 , you are obviously one of those who thinks that you simply open a can with a previously prepared AFL champion inside.

I dont think Ross is a super coach or our list would be performing better.
We have 5 players who are good enough for an all Australian side , ( I include Hayes, Goddard, and Max of course. ) and Luke Ball would not be far off it.

Sorry , I see the glass as half full. The young guys are not big names ( that happens after the fact ) but I believe that Jones will be a very aggressive ball winner next year by anyones standards, Gilbert and Attard will be very effective defenders next year. With his limited game time this year Armitage is our sixth best goal kicker and he will be better after the pre-season.

Potentially we can have a much tougher team than we have had for some years, and this will only help our softer players to perform.

If you are one of those who wants to sell out the soul of the club and recruit a heap of Eagles players I suggest you cut out the middle man and support the eagles.

Oh and if you want to get straight down to it. Every team who wins a flag has numerous hard nuts who let the opposition know to not F with them.

Who do we have?

Hudghton
Hayes
Baker - Is he even AFL standard anymore?

Face it, we are soft. Soft teams don't win flags because soft teams get pushed around by the teams who are the real contenders but again SS i hope your enthusiasm is proved spot on and i'm dead wrong!

I hope you're right SS :)

At the start of 2008 I thought that we would have a great year!
We had King and Gardiner ( no more Rix and Kosi free to play as a forward! ) and Schneider :). Gehrig only had to do as much as he had in 2007 because Kosi and Roo were there as well. Maguire was expected back. Baker would fire up after coming back from suspension.

I don't know if I was right or not! I've certaily had some massive disapointments. We had a funny gameplan, and struggled to score goals. We scraped into a preliminary final but really all year it has been Cats, Hawks, Dogs and the others, and I am not happy that we are one of the others. I want us to be a contender.

Positives for me have been seeing Raph Clarke, and Clinton Jones stepping up a notch, and the potential of David Armitage. :)

I 100% agree with Danger Mouse. If we dont make some big changes to our list were stuffed. Its true Maguire and Baker, even though they are good players, arnt gonna make a differnce what so ever. And the reason for that is PACE. The game isnt Key Position anymore. The game is played like this. You have a back line, you have a forward line, and then you have the rest of the group that are midfielders. Those rest of the group, need to be able to run up and down the ground all game and move the ball. Basically like a running back line. The best teams in the comp have been doing this for 2 years. Now. You look at this list and tell me are our players capable of doing that all game, and the answer is no, They couldnt do it this year for 4 quarters, and its only gonna get harder next year as more teams develop fast hard running lists of players.
Face it RL and the crew dont have the balls to say, lets make some serious changes, The games moving ahead of us! I guarantee that wont happen. Im also very sceptical that dal and these others are gonna make a big difference next year.
Its not the end of the world. There may be some big changes at StKilda maybe in 3-4 years. And the guy who stated were going to challenge when Geelong fade away. Your forgeting about the Hawks. Who are going to be the next Geelong. They have an awsome list of players, and there all young and Built and Hard Going. They will be challenging for premierships for the next 4 years.

Name the quick midfielders that are out there , and how the clubs got them.
I don't know because I have not checked , but I bet most of them came from draft picks rather than trades.

It's gonna be an exciting year for us next year. I won't be expecting the same results but we got some good young players coming through and hopefully the players who didn't perform to their best this year and do so next year. We're not gonna win a flag but good to see the next generation coming through to hopefully lead us to a flag in 3-4years time. David Armitage is quicker than you think, he's got a bit of pace and is extremely agile from what i've seen. When his confidence hopefully he could become an Ablett like player (obviously he's not gonna be as good), can get the hard ball and tackle but also a really good stepper and also kicks goals. He looks fantastic. and guys don't forget.. We got a kid called Jack Steven and I tell you now, he's gonna be an absolute ripper next year. What needs to happen next year is..

In: Promising young players
Out: Hacks and ultra hack (Fiora)
