Sorry guys - cant find the predictions thread. If someone wants to close this one and put it into the other one then please do.
Every year I'm in a predictions competition where you have to guess the week-by-week schedule, the final ladder, Finals, etc. in advance. The winner wins the pool. I haven't had a chance to be in it since I left for America but they want me back in it. It has to be put in by next week so I sat down and did mine over the past day or so.
I'll spare you the week-by-week results as that's kinda boring but here's what it all boils down to.
Bulldogs 18-4 72
St Kilda 17-5 68
Adelaide 15-7 60
Hawthorn 15-7 60
Geelong 14-8 56
Carlton 14-8 56
Brisbane 13-9 52
Collingwood 12-10 48
--------------------------
West Coast 11-11 44
Fremantle 8-14 32
Sydney 8-14 32
North Melbourne 7-15 28
Essendon 6-16 24
Port Adelaide 6-16 24
Richmond 5-17 20
Melbourne 5-17 20
How Teams will be portrayed
Bulldogs -- Playing above themselves, reasons why they wont win it come September, Wouldn't it be nice but they've let everyone down before
St Kilda -- cruising through the season, consensus number one, vow to overcome last year, etc.
Adelaide -- Home and away specialists, supremely talented, wonderfully coached
Hawthorn -- Looking like they've overcome a bad 2009, ready to retake their throne
Geelong -- aging and not as good as they once were, Gary Ablett saga, can they turn it on in the finals?
Carlton -- awful start to the year gets the focus on lack of goal scoring, eventually becomes a story of the best young midfield in the AFL overcoming forward line deficiencies (even when the stats prove otherwise after the slow start to the year) with an over reliance on midfield goals
Brisbane -- Great start to the year that has the media raving but clear chemistry problems in the forward line and not enough top line talent around the ground to be a serious threat
Collingwood -- inconsistencies derail the team as well as injuries to aging players such as Leon Davis, Luke Ball, Alan Didak, etc. "Poor Collingwood"; On their day unstoppable. Media begins to sink their teeth into Mick Malthouse being over the top
West Coast -- sensational at home but they lose too many games they should win outside of Perth. Beat most top ladder teams at home but lose to teams like Richmond, etc. in Melbourne Considered too young and immature
Fremantle -- They're not a joke anymore - even though they don't make the finals they prove that they've got a future
Sydney -- Play the role of September spoilers
North Melbourne -- there abouts, great young talent
Essendon -- Matthew Knights cops a belting from the media and is eventually fired
Port Adelaide -- Does anybody really care? That's how they're portrayed in the media. If you're not a die hard Port Adelaide fan they're completely off the radar.
Richmond -- Hardwick appears to be a coach of the future. Most of their losses they're in the game until midway through the third or start of fourth quarter. Results in some blowouts but it always looks as though they're building to something
Melbourne -- It's all about Jim Stynes cancer battle again next year. Several of their five wins are in emotional circumstances hinging on news of the club champion.
AFL Finals
Week One
Western Bulldogs D. Hawthorn (great game)
St Kilda D. Adelaide (boring)
Geelong D. Collingwood (smash 'em - media writes how Geelong waited for the finals and how they really didn't care what ladder spot they had)
Carlton D. Brisbane (Fevola and Thornton reported, big melee ensues but Carlton get their revenge in the end)
Week Two
Adelaide D. Carlton (Carlton have nothing left following the Brisbane final)
Geelong D. Hawthorn (close game but media calling Geelong the AFL's finals specialists)
Week Three - The Revenge preliminary finals
Western Bulldogs D. Adelaide -- Bulldogs finally get revenge years after two consecutive prelim losses
St Kilda D. Geelong -- Role reversal of 2009. Geelong lead all day but Riewoldt kicks two in time on of the last quarter for the Saints
Week Four -- Grand Final
Western Bulldogs d. St Kilda Brad Johnson kicks 4 goals in winning the Norm Smith Medal presented by Robert Harvey as the Bulldogs win by 27 points.
Brownlow Medalist: Gary Ablett Jr (back-to-back) followed by Bryce Gibbs (Carlton)
Norm Smith Medalist: Brad Johnson (WB)
Rising Star: Anthony Morabito (FRE)
Biggest Flop: Luke Ball (COL) -- Spends half the year injured.
First Coach Fired: Matthew Knights
Biggest Surprise: Setanta O'hAilpin and Lachlan Henderson emerge as stars for Carlton but don't get credit in the media for it. In fact, the media bashes the Carlton forward line week in, week out even when it's become obvious to everybody else that Carlton's got a good young forward line on the improve.
