I sometimes like to play a little thought experiment game, that tries (with varying sucess) to relate this year to a previous year in football history.. usually to try and convince myself that the Tiges have finally turned the corner and our future is brighter than the past 30 years!

At the moment'; for our squad, Im going with 2011 = 1965 or.. just maybe at a pinch 1966.. ieYoung team, comming out of the wilderness with a new hardline coach, goes on to snatch a premiership it shouldnt have.

However for the League overall, Im really convinced 2011 =1982 because

A change in the league pecking order is about to occur .. though it is disguised by a last hurrah of the 'old order'..

Eg 2011 Collingwood = 1982 Carlton
2011 Hawthorn = 1982 Collingwood
2011 Bulldgos = 1982 Geelong
2011 St.Kilda = 1982 Richmond.... at that point no one saw that 1983 would usher in the great era's of Hawthorn and Essendon or the rapid fall away of Richmond, and then Collingwood..... and in regards I see Richmond as

2011 Richmond = 1982 Essendon - scarring quite a few teams, by season's end recognised as universal danger game, but not quite good enough to run riot jor be taken too seriously just yet. Third season for their new coach, who copped alot of losses early, but developed the legendary baby bombers.

I think the 2011 Order will be superficially sustained this year.. Collingwood, Hawthorn, Bulldogs, St.Kilda and the like will maintain appearances, but lurkrng like sharks are Richmond, Melbourne, Essendon that will turn footy 's pecking order on its head next year -t in a more dramatic revolution than expected. In 1982 we were so used to Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond, North, Geelong being there or there abouts it was quite a shock when the next decade of seasons and grandfinals were dominated by Essendon and Hawthorn.. it was almost out of the blue.

Its just a bit of fun finding these 1965 or 1982 paralells... any one have any others?

I liken this years squad to the 1948 invincibles with Jack being Donald Bradman, Cotchin as Bill Brown and Matty White as Ian Johnstone.

Morton thinks he's Keith Miller but isn't Keith Millers hankerchief

I'd like to think it's 1965/66 for the Tigers again.

1967 = 2013 (41 years old)
1969 = 2015
1973 = 2019
1974 = 2020
1980 = 2026 (54 years old)

I was around then...well witnessed 67 grand final.

I think it's an interesting parallel, bit indulgent maybe, but think I've done the same over the years. My only comment is that I wouldn't agree about the relative merits of Hawthorn and Essendon. Hawks finished 3rd in 1982 from memory. That year we finished top, losing 4 games - 2 v Carlton and 2 v Hawthorn. Think it was the year Hawks blooded Brereton, Langford, Curran and Ayres plus a couple of others. You could see they were going places. As for Essendon, the previous year they won 15 games straight. In 82 they were still a very good promising team, so not that surprising they went on to dominate from 83-85. I'm not sure Collingwood or Geelong were much chop in 82, same for North

very true,,,I must have misremembered the year the bombers became the 'danger game' side.. so according to my formula this makes 2011 = 1981.....looking forward to 15 straight wins next year.
