We have 12-14 players who can rotate through the midfield legitimately which is what you need to have a shot at making a finals run I think. A very deep midfield rotation.

I have been a huge supporter of Goodes to spend more time in the middle than in the forward line (like a lot of us I think) but I think the time is approaching where we need at least 50-50, preferably more time up forward. Our midfield has stepped up their output this year to the point that it doesn't look like we need an injection of Goodes every 20 minutes to get things going anymore.

I'd like him to go into the midfield every now and then or if we're desperate for a spark and he isn't seeing enough ball up forward, but I think now it has come to the point where Goodes has more value sat next to Sam up forward than at the centre bounce.

100% agree

If the Reid, Walsh and TDL forward line shows something over the next month, we might have the luxury of returning Goodes to the midfield on a more permanent basis.

I still think he's a better midfielder and that's where he can be his most damaging. He's also much, much harder to match up on when he's playing in midfield rather than up forward.

Got shifted forward halfway through the Hawks game and didn't look back, kicking bags in that and the Adelaide game before his injury, he was definitely showing that he has added playing forward genuinely to his bag of tricks - before I would have seen him as a bit-part forward, but now he can definitely be counted on to kick goals.

He got great ball from our midfield in those games of course BUT he dominated because he was one out for the most part. Get Goodes ball one-on-one and he would be a nightmare to stop.

And I'm confident we could get him that space and one-on-one situations with Reid, Walsh/Spangher and TDL all up there permanently.

Goodes forward extends his playing career by 2 years, after this injury, at his age, he might lose half yard of pace. Our midfield doesn't really need him, perhaps the odd burst, but his vlue as a forward is obvious from the Adelaide game. Still hard to match up on, and takes the pressure off Reid, by the time Sam is 24 and ready to take over the forward line, we'll have other options to run with him. For the rest of this year Goodes will play forward, and TDL and Walsh will have to fight it out for a spot as we carry our second ruck in the fwd pocket

I'm not sure what you're replying to?

I know he's a very good forward.

But he's a great midfielder.

Like I said, this is dependent on whether or not Reid/Walsh/TDL can become a functioning forward unit.

Although it's not exaclty a midfield question, do people see TDL or Walsh as the one likely to give way when Goodes comes back?

I think Walsh is the bigger, stronger FWD we've been missing, while TDL is the more mobile, and a more direct replacement for Goodes (not that anyone can replace him). So i'd expect Tommy to stay, and TDL to be put back in the ressies. But maybe it could be LRT to go back, and both stay?

With Reid, Walsh, Goodes, TDL, McGlynn, and a resting ruck (Mumford/LRT/Pyke) we'd have a nice mix of size and pace which would cause a lot of trouble for most defences.

Goodes in Mcglynn out.

If McGlynn can carry the form of last weekend forward I'll be backing him to the hilt. His pressure game was fantastic and really stood out in a game where the whole team were piling on the forward pressure. Sure it'd be good if he could hit up a few more goals but he seems to be working back to some fine form. I think he's ideal rotating midfield/forward but his best work seems to be forward and that's where I'd always start him

I disagree. I think both LRT & Spangher can do pretty much the same job Walsh does. TDL is a very smart player, who leads to the right spots, pressures well, and actually hurts the opposition when he has a shot on goal. I'd rather see Walsh go out before TDL.

We haven't seen enough of Walsh yet to know what he might be capable of - or what he might become capable of. At this stage I would back Spangher (when fit enough) to have a bigger impact on a consistent basis simply because he has more experience. But I can see in the future a forward line that includes all of Spangher, Reid, Walsh and TDL (plus a resting ruck at times, and for a while, with Goodes also floating through).

I think all of Spangher, Reid and Walsh are mobile enough and have good enough endurance to play out from goal, offering a marking target at half forward.

TDL provides something a little different. Although he is a good lead and mark, he also has pace and can provide something at ground level.

By the time we get to the Geelong game, the forward line should look something like
LRT, Goodes, TDL
McG, Reid, O'Keefe

With Benny and ROK both rotating thru the middle and LRT roving as required up the ground dragging a defender with him and Goodes having the odd run on the ball. If Pyke is still in the team when Goodes comes back, LRT might have to make way, and I am a huge supporter of LRT, just seems logical
