Again in a round-robin format for the first round but then after this round, the next 2 weeks are played as normal matches. Every game played accrues points and percentages for a ladder and after those 3 rounds, the top 2 teams on the NAB Cup ladder will play off in the GF.

Round 1: Sydney-Geelong-St.Kilda at Etihad Stadium 6.40pm February 24th

Round 2: Sydney vs North Melbourne at Castle Hill 2.40 pm March 3rd

The North game is at Bruce Purser which isn't really Castle Hill, but further north at Kellyville.

Round 3 we play Essendon at Etihad which hopefully means Round 4 will be back in Sydney at Blacktown. (assuming we don't make the GF which judging by past years is a very good assumption to make)

I'm liking this year's format. I have a feeling all these games are going to be televised from the sounds of things? That's all I want, I don't care if we lose the matches as long as I can watch.

No I don't think there'll be coverage at Bruce Puser

They managed it at Blacktown. All you need is a crane sort of thing with a cameraman on top, like they had behind the goal at Blacktown. I find it hard to believe there wouldn't be any coverage for a 'live' NAB Cup Match, since it's an actually 'important' game.

They've used a scissor lift at BPR for filming SFL games, so it can and has been done. The ground lighting is at the AFL televised games standard too.

More importantly, there are now nets at each end behind the goals!

Edit: Hawthorn vs GWS is the Foxtel game for that Saturday afternoon, though you'd think it will still be filmed.

2012 NAB Cup fixture and TV programming

I'm not sure why they're having the round robin format again. I understand why when it's a knock out - but if it's just a round robin, what's the point?
In previous years, teams still had to play a "NAB Challenge" match when they were knocked out. Perhaps this is to provide some incentive for those teams who may still have a chance of making the GF. I'm also thinking TV rights as I can't recall NAB Challenge matches being broadcast.

I see why they've made it a round robin format. I just don't get why they've keep the three team 'lighting' matches for round one. That existed because it's impossible to have a straight up knock out comp with 18 teams. But now it's not a knock out comp, what's the point?

Just play three weeks of regular games.

Edit: Oh, haha. Sorry Grim - I was confused as to what you were saying, but then I realised I made a mistake in my post. I meant to say "I'm not sure why they're having the lighting format again."

The reason for week 1 is to lessen the work load on the players. The AFL and the TV Networks would rather a round of games but the players want the Round Robin set up and hence got in because they didn't get the second in season bye.

Round Robin against Geelong and St Kilda is at Etihad, would be pretty decent to go to.

I dont mind the format this year, everyones playing relatively competitive games right through to the final which should put sides in good stead for round 1
