An update on the injuries of Bartel, Kelly, Caddy and McIntosh here: http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/ge...n-after-surgery/story-fnelctok-1226552385848]

KEY Geelong stars Jimmy Bartel, James Kelly and Josh Caddy are set to resume full training after making encouraging progress from off-season surgery.

Assistant coach James Rahilly said yesterday the trio had recovered strongly after injury-enforced layoffs.

Former Roo Hamish McIntosh was one of few to miss the interclub match arranged by the clubs' coaches, brothers Chris and Brad Scott. McIntosh is recovering from knee surgery.

Bartel (foot), Kelly (hip) and Caddy (shoulder) were restricted to laps and light drills in a half-hour warm-up at the nearby St Mary's Oval, but all played in a short, sharp match at Simonds Stadium against a North Melbourne side that featured star forward Drew Petrie.

Rahilly said he was pleased with the trio's progress.

"Jimmy's travelling pretty well. He's starting to train and do a few sessions," Rahilly said.

"I'm not sure when he'll be doing a full session, but it won't be too far away.

"James Kelly is pretty much up to full training as well, so they're going along very well."

Gold Coast recruit Caddy has handled full-contact sessions and is close to joining the main group, while McIntosh remains on a restricted training program.

"I can't see him being too far away," Rahilly said. "He's a little bit slower than the others, but he'll be back in full training soon as well.

"He's still doing a lot, but when he joins the match-simulation drills will be up to the docs and physio. He's on the track completing drills and doing some one-on-one stuff, so I wouldn't think he'd be too far away at all."

Josh Hunt is on a restricted program that might delay his start to the season, after having glandular fever. It was diagnosed after he didn't do well in a time trial and he was sent for tests.

Hunt has been restricted to light duties since Christmas, and has lost 3 kg. Let's hope he doesn't lose too much more conditioning, because glandular fever can be very debilitating for months after having it.

We're obviously not going to hear anything informative about Menzel.

Do we have any updates on Smedts and McCarthy?
I notice the Hunt article suggests Smedts will be in the NAB Cup.

Good opportunity for Bews/Guthrie/Thurlow if Hunt misses the first couple of rounds, could be up for grabs in the NAB! I can see it already - Thurlow racking up 20 off HB and running Cyril down in a foot race!

Could spell the end of Josh.

Sometimes I fear reading the daily news as GFC always seems to be prominent re injuries/illness.

When I saw JHunt has glandular fever - it ruined my breakfast. This illness can vary so much with the individual concerned. Can be over it in a month - sometimes it lasts 12 months. And it has been linked with Chronic fatigue as well.

I hope for Josh's sake and Cats fans - it is a mild case.

If his glands are anything like the size of his thighs they may need to put the white screen around him!

I went over the senior player list on the cats homepage last night and had noticed J.Hunt was down to 80kgs. I figured it was a mix up with T.Hunt as he's now 101kgs but maybe not? :p Hopefully he hasn't passed it on to any other player either. Loss of weight isn't as big a concern as conditioning is though. I reckon he will need a few games in the VFL first, particularly if it drags on and he misses the NAB Cup.

Smedts is meant to be fit again and back to full training but still no idea about McCarthy, I think it will be some time before he's back.

I spotted that the other week and it is clearly a case of mixing the names.

The Kissing Disease, one certainly hopes he hasn't passed it on to other players.
I seem to remember it seriously interrupting Jim Ryun's career.

A bit longer hair and he'll be rockin' it Maxi Rooke style soon with that beard!

You don't think that they have just boxed up the "Hunt" names?

Josh losses 20+ kgs and Poodle puts on 20+ kgs. Do the sums.

Are we somehow at cross-purposes here? I didn't comment on the the weights, which I think you have correctly slotted as an obvious balls-up.
I was merely making a facetious comment about FD2D's hope that JHunt hadn't passed on his illness to any other player.

Cheers Fred. It is a pity that BF does not come with fonts like <sarcastica> so that you can get the tone of the message.;)

It's good to see that's for sure. My only concern about rockin it Max Rooke style is at the end of the day, even Max was succumbed by a knee injury :( Lets hope he shaves that off and gets back to rockin' it Menzel style, but all in good time of course. I would say 3-4 months at least before even contemplating a return...

I'm just happy to see him out there training. If he returns in Round 1 or Round 5 I don't really care, as long as he's 100%.

yep, play it safe with him.

I was thinking about his knee(s) yesterday and I think it was VEEDUBS saying in another thread something along the lines that specialists reckon you only have about 85% of your original mobility/stablilty or something after a recon? I can't remember exactly what was said but it was along those lines......

What i'd like to know is, it is different between people who have a 'normal' stable knee before a recon, as opposed to someone who already had a structurally weak knee pre-recon?? It makes sense that if you originally had a good knee and then needed a reconstruction that you may lose a small % of functionality BUT if you already had weak-knees pre-surgery, say 70% stability of a 'normal' knee that this should theortically be able to be improved from a reconstruction?

This is purely theory and would love to hear from someone with some valid knowledge of this but I would think the outcomes from surgery would vary greatly depending on the original stability of the knee. I mean Menzels knees might still not be as stable as a post-op originally stable knee BUT it might be more stable than what he had originally. Thoughts?

I'm grasping for positives with him haha. I guess it's probably better that he has done both knees if they were already weak as opposed to the same one twice.

I think some one said Menzel was one player who needed a BORE to increase the size of the tunnel the ligament goes thru. My optimistic mind reckons that must help. It corrects a flaw.

In fact a bit of thinking says that if the reco had produced an 85% result when compared with the original knee soundness then Menzel should have done his repaired knee. He did the other one. He has now done both had the correction and he should be ready to go. The recent tweak is hopefully the result of his eagerness to get back into it.

He is a key player going forward.

That's what my optimistic tells me, too ;) hope i'm right for once!

Why can't they just wack some of this shit in there.

Back in my day the trainers used to slap a penny on each side of the knee, wrap some bandage around it, and you were fit to go.
Too much mollycoddling these days, they'll be wanting a roof over the changerooms next.
