Most of us are new to draft based fantasy footy games therefore for those intending to participate in draft game leagues, what strategies in player selection if any are people proposing to use? Are people going to select available premium midfielders throughout the early rounds and pad out the remaining positions in the later rounds, select the best player available per position or perhaps in the early rounds select the premium rucks considering there arent too many of them relative to the other positions? Also, if given the number 1 pick, who would you choose? It would be hard to pass up on Ablett at number 1 imo.

I'm thinking might be a good idea to grab elite rookies early too. Only so many you would think guarenteed early games.

You wouldn't be taking rookies at all unless you think they can score as a premium. Draft-based games don't use the salary cap concept.

The two most common scenarios (based off NFL drafts) are either go for the highest scorers first - the premium midfielders, e.g. Ablett, Swan and Pendlebury - or go for the highest scorer in the rarer positions, e.g. Cox, Goddard and Franklin. It really depends on the team layout the particular game you're in is using.

OK, thanks. I didn't realise that.

Take a Ablett/Swan/Kennedy early then fill in the forwards/defenders.

Also are we going to have a draft league on this board?

Been involved in quite a few drafts during NFL fantasy football and what I've found is it is best to be in the middle of the draft say picking 6th in a 12 team comp as if you draft first or last in a reverse snake type draft the disparity between talent available becomes quite large.

If you pick 1st you don't get another pick until pick 23 and if your picking last you get picks 12 and 13 but then have to wait till pick 32 to pick again but if your around pick 6 you get 6,17,27 etc.

I am in a 10 man NFL league and I prefer picks 8 and 9. Two picks of good quality trumps one of good and one of average.

The ones I've been involved in are totally random just when you go into the interface your draft order is decided for you. Not sure if this is the model the SC will use or not

I'm not very use to this game type. Say you pick GAJ with pick 1 and he does his ACL round 1, if he can't play do you get any compensation or just suffer?

im not familliar either but will look to pick premiums and then mid pricers.

You suffer.

in my understanding you can make automated trades with the computer and you can make orchestrate trades between each other.
is this correct.

Yes all undrafted players go into a draft pool and you can swap any of your players for one of these. Also in the NFL version players can trade players between teams but there are untradeable players usually the elite scoring players, trades do have the ability to be vetoed if two teams agree to a trade the other teams can approve or not that it is a balanced and fair trade and allow it to happen or not.
Don't know if this feature is going to be in play in SC

Pick 1 has a massive advantage with Ablett IMO. Captain all year and he'll score 10-15 points more than the next best player. I reckon 30%+ of winners will have Ablett.

Only thing is Dan you get Ablett your next pick won't be until 23 or so so the points you make with Ablett gets evened out by the points you miss out on with the other players

You may be right with your 30%, but I have been in SC Pro (Gold) leagues the last two years winning last year myself with out GAJ; and the year before that our winner didn't have him either. (Think the guy that did didn't even make finals!) It's not always good to have 1st pick in the draft.

What happens if, say, a very low-profile player who was undrafted shoots the lights out in Round 1 and there is high demand to get him into your team. Would it simply be a case of first in best dressed in terms of trading to bring him in?

Generally what happens is that all players are locked after a round, and everyone can pick however many players they want to bring in. They then get assigned by record, so those who lost by the most gets their first selection and so on down and the rest are unlocked.

What happens in the NFL is there is a waiver system where everyone can make a claim to that player but the person who is next inline in the waiver process gets to claim him but once you claim a player you go to the end of the cue to select a player from waivers next time. The waiver period usually lasts for two days after a weekends games then all players are once again open for free selection on the first come first served basis
