EDFL Players to Strut Their Skills in the Unity Cup - Team Selected

Monday, March 04, 2013
After weeks of training and meetings as well as other events, Rick (Coach and newly appointed AFL Multicultural Community Ambassador) with the help of the selection committee has selected the side.

Rick would like to thank the many 15 - 19 year olds who trained and helped out and whilst only 12 players were selected the turnout of about 70 odd players was fantastic to say the least.
Rick would also like to thank Hadfield Football Club for making the ground available to train on and the players also appreciated it.

We also thank the EDFL for giving access to games and advice from their own AFL 9s competition. We urge you all to have teams ready for next year as it is fun and aids the development of footballers of all ages... boys and girls. Keep an eye on the EDFL website regarding the 2013 AFL 9s competition.

Congratulations to the players selected and please note we have a round robin event before the big games on the 13th March, 2013 at Essendon Football Club (Windy Hill) with a pie night to follow organised by the Essendon Football Club.

Please get behind these EDFL players and support them on the 17th March at Airport West Football Club. The canteen will be open for a big footy day which starts at 10:00am and finishes around 3:00pm. Qualifiers going into the Australasian Cup Day on the 24th March at JJ Holland Reserve.

The Team:
1. Hisham Kerbatieh (Hadfield Fc) (CAPTAIN)
2. Abdul Moustafa (Hadfield Fc)
3. Mohammed Moustafa (Hadfield Fc)
4. Steven Vocale (Hadfield Fc)
5. Michael Tang (Hadfield Fc)
6. Moustafa Rabah (Hadfield Fc)
7. Adam Clemente (Pascoe Vale Fc)
8. Liam Forbes (Pascoe Vale Fc)
9. Shaun Stewart (Ess. Doutta Stars Fc)
10. Lachlan Myers (Ess. Doutta Stars Fc)
11. Brodie Myers (Ess. Doutta Stars Fc)
12. Alexander Hymer (Aberfeldie Fc)

Hey Aukmel, when was training for this taking place? Do you know?
I.e was it weekdays/weekends at what time?
Would be curious to know. Means nothing to anyone else, but depending on the
answer, I may PM you with some interesting info.

I honestly couldn't care. The Cup is a great concept which now highlights the youth of the EDFL and from where they or their families came from. Hopefully the idea continues to grow into something much bigger.

That said, I believe there was some wed nights involved.

I'm looking at getting back into the local footy scene next year and this would be one avenue I'd be really keen expanding on. Imagine a day in the future like this with 10-20 teams of young men from many different cultures gathering in a celebration of the sport of AFL 9s? Would be quite something.

stars alive I can confirm Shaun (thanks to his dad) did indeed run 2.79 for the 20m at those trials. A fair effort for a kid whose spent the summer playing basketball and doing his pre-season work alone.

Nope. The kid is just another one of those hard working young 15 year olds who love their footy.

What can you tell me about the other players in the squad?

Don't know a lot about the Hadfield boys apart from Kerbatieh, Vocale and Tang. Three very talented players. I've seen the Meyers boys at Doutta's training and both look sharp. Clemente is a hard working backman who gives it his all. Don't know Liam Forbes, while Alex Hymer is a terrific young bloke with skills to burn and very under-rated. Will be one of Abers key U16 players in 2013.

AFL 9s touch version of the game.

Created by Essendon Football Club and the Australian Federal Police in 2008, the Unity Cup is a great success and is now supported by the AFL Multicultural Program, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne , and Melbourne Football Clubs.

The Unity Cup focuses iteon strengthening ties with the Police, Muslim, and other culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD), through a mutual appreciation of Australian Rules football.
In 2012, the format was changed to the AFL 9s touch version of the game, and the age group of the players varied from adults 15 to 19 years. The competition features twelve teams from Melbourne's Muslim, Jewish and Indigenous communities including one team, MUJU, that comprised players from Muslim and Jewish backgrounds. The AFL Multicultural Program also sponsored three interstate teams from northern terriority, Adelaide and Sydney to compete in the event.
After five years, the Unity Cup continues to foster a mutual understanding and respect, highlighting the positive interaction between the Australian Federal Police and CALD communities and Essendon Football Club is proud to be a founding partner of the Unity Cup.

The games based on an AFL 9s format is to played at Airport West Fc on the 17th March 2013 which is the first game day and only a football day and the 24th March 2013 at JJ Holland Reserve Kensington where 4 interstate teams and 6 local teams will participate...these are all day events with the 17th been named the UNITY CUP Victorian Championship and the 24th being the UNITY CUP NATIONAL COMPETITION...groups are made up of two divisions and the winner in each division to proceed to the grand finals..

Article about one of this weeks competing teams, the Bharat Bombers.

Footy may not be Indians favourite sport but not for the second generation Indians in Melbourne. Onlookers were surprised by the sight of Indians training at the oval in Glen Waverley, not the usual bat and ball stuff – but with the oval ball running fast and marking and kicking the red Sherrin. Yes, Melbourne’s favouritesport, AFL Football, aff ectionately called as footy, has found its way in to the Indian homes and for the first time there will be an Indian team footy playing matches in Melbourne.

Essendon Football Club, along with the Australian Federal Police, co-founded the Unity Cup which is an annual Australian Rules Football tournament played between number sides in multicultural Melbourne. The club is working closely with local Indian community and building upon a historical close relationship between those of Indian heritage and the Essendon Football Club

I'm happy to report that, the EDFL All Stars have won the 2013 Victorian Unity Cup and by doing so qualified for the National Champs next weekend here in Melbourne.

Due to the absence of captain Hisham Kerbatieh who was on Cannons duty, Hadfields Michael Tang, who was adjudged BOG in the Grand Final, brilliantly led the young EDFL side through 6 games to win the title.

Although they started shaky, by tournaments end the boys had just about got a grip on just how AFL 9s should be played. Mo and Abdul Moustafa were tireless in both attack and defense while Liam Forbes of Pascoe Vale again highlighted the depth in the U16 age group. His team mate Adam Clemente was rock solid kicking plenty of goals while the very under rated Alex Hymer went from strength to strength as the games went on. Steven Vocale added the maturity and guidance most young teams need, while the Meyers brothers were simply outstanding. Shaun Stewart again showed why so many people rate him as a super backman despite his 180cm frame. A late replacement in the side, Khaleel Khasbar was in everything working up and down the ground taking many intercepts.

All in all a great day which highlighted the incredible diversity across the game and a version of it which really should catch on in the future. Well done to all teams who competed on the day to make it so special.

Some pics of the winning team.

EDFL Boys do the league proud

The day belonged to co coach Ahmed Moustafa who did a fantastic job co coordinating the team from 9 am till 3.00 pm and having won through to the semis. The boys then fronted up against Muju the defending champions and sealed a big win.
Amazingly during the day Muju had beaten the boys convincingly so to beat them in the grand final was sweet success.
In all a fantastic effort which sees the boys front up again on Sunday week at JJ Holland reserve to contest the Australian cup which will include teams from interstate ,namely Adelaide, Sydney and Darwin which should be no mean feat.
Congratulations to the boys who have been fantastic to say the least, their behaviour, their conduct and their ability to play for each other has been sensational and a testament to the EDFL that we have some of the best players going round.
The coach said it takes a team to win and not one of the boys cared about themselves and in the end that’s what brings unity in the competition.
MICAHEL TANG from Hadfield was adjudged by a panel as the winner of the best on ground medal.

During the week Captain Hisham Kerbatieh was withdrawn from the team due to Calder cannons commitments and so a replacement in khaleel Ashkar (Hadfield fc) was called upon...

The day belonged to co coach Ahmed Moustafa who did a fantastic job co coordinating the team from 9 am till 3.00 pm and having won through to the semis ..finally sat back and as he said the boys jelled and just played for each other hence the big win against tournament favourites and last year’s champions MUJU.

Fantastic effort yesterday by the EDFL boys to finish runners-up to a very good GWS side.

Coaches report:

Congratulations on a fantastic effort to theEDFL boys who after winning the VICTORIAN PREMIERSHIP the week before progressed to the AUSTRALASIAN (NATIONAL TITLES) where the competition included teams from Sydney , Darwin and Adelaide.

The boys absolutely smashed all teams before them entering the semi final undefeated throughout the day..
Having won the semi in excellent styleBOMBERS ALL STARS(EDFL BOYS)progressed through to the grand final against an under 19 Sydney team made up of GWS(AFL) multicultural development players that included two GWS reserves .
The key to this was our boys were an under 16 team with a under 14 player in our side as well... none the less what a match it was...at the end of the day turnovers and tired legs cost theedflboys and ran out runners up to lose by 7 points.
The boys were devastated by the loss but coach Rick and Ahmed said to them it was a sensational effort considering all boys had played at the local level either in their clubs 18s or senior sides practices matches the day before.
It was emphasised that all players contributed and that AFL 9s is a game that will definitely aid in the ability to control the ball ,the game and improve your skills no doubt.
Rick and Ahmed said “the boys are considering staying together for the next season of theEDFL AFL 9s summer comp”...so look out for the little stars.
The ESSENDON FOOTBALL CLUB representatives were rapt with the boys so much they have let them keep their rep jumpers....
PLAYERS:
HISHAM KERBATIEH: captain of the team..... played well all day...silky skills with vertical leaps(exciting to watch) who led from the front . brilliant.
ABDUL MOUSTAFA: nuggetty rover who tirelessly gave his all ..good judgement and decision making skills.
STEVEN VOCALE: ever reliable and tough as nails.
MUSTAFA RABAH: backman supreme,, does more than his fair share.
MICHAEL TANG: tall, tough, uncomprisng, superb all day.
SHAUN STEWART: backline specialist, nothing went past him, took mark after mark.
ADAM CLEMENTE: tough, sincere and workmanlike ...wins nearly every contest..sensational.
MOHAMMED MOUSTAFA. Played mainly forward all day ...kicked plenty was a focal point.
LIAM FORBES: coaches favourite player, considerate, straight at the ball player ..a quiet player who lets the footy do the talking.
ALEXANDER HYMER: plays anywhere ( the utility of the team), quiet and workmanlike ...more than hold his own..champion.
KHALEEL ASHKAR: tireless team player whose huge strength was a plus and his ability to win the ball was fantastic
BRODIE MYERS: out injured due to a groin injury,, his run and pace was sorely missed and probably cost us in the end .
LACHLAN MYERS: sensational..you won’t get any tougher than this boy...skills all round the proper version of AFL he will be dynamite.
