2014 Back Six

We really lack one class hard, skillful and smart backliner! someone needs to put their hand up and not from the current group. Shaw is a big hole for us no doubt.
Reid is AA back so needs to go back, why else did we recruit White for??
Hopefully Young can show some good form and needs to kick out for us. Goldsack isnt strong or smart enough. From my POV, Maxwell is still in the 18 for leadership down back.

B - Toovey - Brown - Williams
HB - Keefe - Reid - Maxwell

Other options - Young - Frost - Goldsack - Ramsey?

Not sure Keeffe would have the mobility to go around on a back flank...

I'd like to see Sinclair become a regular, loved the way he shut down dahlhaus and davey this year, IMO he's the answer to our problem with small forwards. In saying that he REALLY needs to work on his foot skills, too often you see him break into open space and then hit the other team on chest. Needs to take an extra 2 steps an spot someone up.

Marley, Brown, Sinclair

Goldsack, Keefe, Young/Broomy/Ramsay

Like the idea of Young taking the kickouts.

Haha, gotta have faith in the kids. Goldy I prefer in the fwd line but with Reid, White, Cloke, Fas, Billy, Blair, Sidey, Pick 10, and any resting midfielders there I haven't got a spot for him. Can we apply somewhere to extend the bench to 8 players?

B: Toovey Keeffe Williams
HB: Sidebottom Brown Seedsman

Not a great backline, is it? I am probably warming toi the need to get Young in there as well. Obviously assuming Reid is used at CHF (which I think we still need). If the opposition plays with three genuine talls, we switch him back. Might also consider moving O'Brien back down there in the short term, until someone like Ramsay or Frost can force their way in.

Not sure if i've missed something but i'd suggest that's far from our best backline....

I'd be going with:

Williams Brown Toovey
O'Brien Reid Seedsman

That looks a lot better.
Keeffe starts on the bench.

Soon we should have Oxley in a back pocket, Broomhead and i'd even trial Fas off a HBF to allow Harry to roam across the wing. I'd suggest we'll still probably see Maxy there R1 too although hopefully for our sake, he's replaced quickly in the starting 18.

EDIT: Missed Sinclair. Throw him into the HBF running as well.

Seedsman Brown Broomhead
Williams Keeffe Scharenberg

*Toovey run with tagger*

What? Why.....

Macaffer did a perfect job at this last year.
In fact, behind Crowley he was probably one of the best taggers in the game.

If you have to ask you won't understand the answer o_O

Quality 5th post.

B: Keefe Brown Toovey

HB: Sinclair Reid Williams

Reid playing on oppositions weakest tall or loose depending on the situation (preferably loose) since Toovey can do as good as if not better defensive job than Reid and is nowhere near as good a rebounder.

Whether you like him or not when Sinclair played this season he was actually more damaging and provided more drive and was more damaging than a lot of our backs. His field kicking is no way near as bad as his goal kicking and it surprised me how well he defended opposition small forwards.

If Williams improved as much next season as he did in 2012 he'd be in the top 2-3 small backs in the comp.

Reid playing loose and Toovey back from injury gives us a pretty strong intercept marking and third man up spoiling capacity. All the top teams do this really well and it's something we've missed since 2011.

Seedsman, Sidebottom, Young and Broomhead if he plays, to rotate through half back as well.

It probably isn't the best backline in isolation, but when viewed in terms of balance across the team... For example, I believe Reid is best for us in the forwardline, so despite the fact that he would definitely strengthen our backline, I have left him out.

Also, not sure why we would have Keeffe on the bench. Can you elaborate? Typically these days the bench is reserved for rotating mids (and maybe one versatile running utility). But rarely would you have a key position defender on the bench.

I agree on O'Brien, and if Sidebottom doesn't end up going back to HB, I would absolutely put O'Brien there.

I'm not sure you can fit all of Keeffe, Reid and Brown in the same backline although that would be opposition specific. I think one of Toovey/O'Brien can play on the 3rd tall (Gunston etc) so if Reid is playing back then Keeffe starts on the bench.

I am starting to agree that maybe Reid is better used forward though.
A spine of Brown, Keeffe, Grundy, Reid, Cloke with White roaming looks very sound.

I guess that's my point. Either Keeffe is in the backline, or the forwardline, or the VFL. He wouldn't be a candidate for the bench.

I think we can play Brown, Reid and Keeffe all together in the same back line. Reid is extremely mobile for his size and a good kick so can play on a tall or play loose. Most decent sides play with 3 tall forwards now anyway.

I would go
Tooves-Brown-Marley
Reid-Keeffe-Maxy

Goldy maybe on the bench as our 7th defender and swing man.

Reid takes kick ins or Clinton Young if he is in the vicinity. Even Goldy when he is there.

So everyone is happy that our back six contained Maxwell (yeah I know ) at 193cm with Brown & Keefffe. Yet having Reid, at 195cms makes us top heavy, less mobile & defensively worse?o_O

Jack Frost I tip to be a big mover and get into our Back 6. Really Liked what I saw of him this season.
Though did have a Knee Injury that stuffed his Season:(

The 5 key backmen for 2014 I would lock in are Brown, Keefffeee, Tooves, Marley, Reid.

Maxwell's role has got to be being phased out depth. Sinclair might struggle for a spot as a permanent backman: given the number of games we have put into him it would be great if he would take the great leap forward next year.

There are a some decent candidates for the extra spaces that could/will be rotated through: Young, Sidey, Seedsmen. I can't see the Sack having a spot up forward so maybe he will get some backtime.

Bottom line, legendstatus has it spot on, we lack one key backman. This draft, or next year via free agency?

Agree about Sinclair.Thought he owned his spot before getting injured and had a great balance between attack and defense.. and he was much better 1 v 1 than I thought he would be. Puts him just ahead of Young, Seedsman and Harry for bf / bp imo.
