Time for something different this year. Starting up a fantasy comp for tennis, basically it is like dream team for tennis, you pick a team of players who think you will do well. There are exceptions to this, you can't just pick Nadal, Djokovic and all the top guys. You have take different players from different rankings groups. Here you have a team of 7 men and 7 women and you must select from the following:

- 1 player from the top 5
- 2 players from the top 6-20
- 2 players from the top 21-50
- 2 players from 51+

Men's Rankings: http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx
Women's Rankings: http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx

Then depending on how they do in tournaments and how much ranking points each player gets, that is totalled up to get a score and this is what we use for this comp. Here is an example of who you might select and what points you might get (using Aus Open 2013 results):

Top 5 Player: Djokovic (Winner: 2000)
Top 6-20 players: Wawrinka (4th round: 180), Tsonga (QF: 360)
Top 21-50 players: Seppi (4th round: 180), Hewitt (1st: 10)
Top 51+: Matosevic (1st: 10), Kubot (1st: 10)

So 2000 + 180 + 360 + 180 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 2750 points for that.

Now you select your team for the season but there were be times during the season to be able to change your team if wanted. After the Australian Open will be the first opportunity to change your team for the February bunch of tournaments. I will post a list of weeks that your team would be open for change later but now your team is for the Australian Open.

The one other catch is that we use the rankings as of at that current time. But say if your player goes from 9 to 5 when you can change , you are allowed to keep that player or change to a different top 5 player, so effectively your top 6-20 pick becomes a top 6-20 pick. Same thing if the reverse happens, if your top 5 player sneaks out of the top 5 to the top 6-20 then you have to pick a player from that ranking (and effectively stuck with 3 top 6-20 picks). So choose wisely.

Prize: The overall winner for the year will win a prize that I'll put up for around $50 or more, it will be something tennis related just haven't decided what.

Make your team up by 10.59am Monday with 7 men and 7 women you have selected. Hope you get involved as it's a bit of fun for all involved.

Sounds fun, I'll have a go. Although I only really follow the majors. Is there any injury cover or do we need to pick durable players?

(Just for the heads up a few of you have Jerzy Janowicz in the 21-50 bracket he is ranked 20 so doesn't qualify in the 21-50 section.)

Was 21 at the time of posting. Can matt_897 clarify?

Yeah, it's as of last week's rankings now, so Janowicz is fine. Sorry I though I wrote that down. And if you picked Janowicz for this tourny, you get to keep him as your 21-50 player for as long as you like even if he has a good tourny and goes up in the rankings. Sort of the dream team aspect of this game.

Don't mean to hijack thread but didn't really think it was worth of a new thread.

Am thinking of developing a fantasy tennis website sometime in the first half of this year. Would be based upon the AFL Super Coach where you would have a squad of 16 with 12 players active for any given week (or two weeks for Grand Slam periods), and maybe 12 trades over the course of the year, all having to fit under a specified salary cap.

Was just looking for scoring suggestions?

Was thinking 1 point per game won, 5 points per set won, and 20 points for winning the match. This would then to be converted into a % figure out of 100 as not to favour someone who plays in a game with a long fifth set. Under this system the most even match I've figured would be about 55-45 (6-0 6-0 6-7 6-7 14-16) in a 5 setter, or about 64-36 in a 3 setter which I figure is about right.

Then give each match a weighting based upon the tournament and the round.

I haven't really though about how to handle players receiving byes. I figure for byes or walkover's Probably just 100-0? Also in matches with a retirement you could have a situation where the loser gets more points, but if they got injured that far in front the other guy probably doesn't deserve any more than a 50/50 split of the points. I don't think that happens too often anyway.

A bit further info would like to do all 65 tournaments in the calendar year but that would depend on whether there is a results file that you can download and parse or whether results would have to be typed in manually at the conclusion of each week. If the latter, I'd probably just stick to the ATP 500 and above tournaments of which there are 25.

Will updates the points table in the next 24 hours.

The next week will be an open week so if you want to change any of your teams, it will be a chance to do so (so the WTA events of Paris and Pattya City won't be counted). Rankings that come out tomorrow to be used. Remember if you want to change a player, you can change for a player of that rank as of the new rankings. So if your 6-20 player is a top 5 player now after AO, you are welcome to change to a different top 5 player if you like.
