A floating donut is used to utilise the captain loophole. It's a non-scoring player (a player who is not playing) who is put onto your field and made captain if you are happy with your vice captain’s score, meaning you'll get your vice captain's score as captain. Ultimately, you can get two bites of the cherry each round when selecting your captain, which is vital if you want SuperCoach success.

Due to the rolling lockout, a floating donut is now important. When selecting a floating donut you should pick them in the position you need the least, which is your fourth ruckman. Because you only need two ruckman on your field, it’s not vital to have a strong bench there. I would only look to pick one bench ruckman who is likely to play games, so you can use him as an emergency and cash cow, but your other bench ruckman should be as cheap as possible. This guy will be your floating donut.

The position left blank is your fourth ruckman. He can be used as the floating donut. I'll give you the best options to fill this position.

Usually when selecting your fourth ruckman, you wouldn't put much time into it. But now your fourth is now an important part of your SuperCoach side, as selecting the right one can be the difference between a win and a loss in a league game or even $50k.

When looking for a floating donut, there are four possible options this year, who are all priced at the minimum price of $102,400. They are Jason Holmes (St.Kilda), Max King (Melbourne),Patrick Mitchell (Sydney) and Archie Smith (Brisbane). Now I’ll help you pick the best option.

To fully utilise the captain loophole, we'll be looking for players whose team plays as late as possible in the round, meaning we get more options when using the captain loophole. So I've gone through the fixtures of each of these four player’s teams, to see who is the best player to select to as our floating donut.

Sydney and Brisbane each play only four Sunday games this year, so straightaway they're crossed off the list. So it's down to Max King (Melbourne) vs. Jason Holmes (St.Kilda).

St.Kilda play eight games on Sunday/Monday, while Melbourne play 10 games on Sunday/ Monday, from a possible 21 (please note the fixture is only available for 21 games, as the round 23 fixture is yet to be announced).

Max King is the guy you should lock in as your fourth ruckman, as his side Melbourne regularly plays late in the round, meaning you have more choices to pick from, when using the captain loophole. It’s unlikely that he’ll get any game time this year, but he'll still make a valuable contribution to your SuperCoach side.

However, there are some people who oppose the floating donut, as it can be considered risky. Some people like to start the year with a SuperCoach team full of players who are playing in round one. If you're fourth ruckman is getting games he can't be used for the captain loophole, but he'll be making money, which is equally important. If he's playing you can also use him as an emergency, just in case one of your ruckman is injured, suspended or rested throughout the year and he could save you a donut. Also, selecting your vice captain's score over your captain' score may not always be beneficial, as this is a game of skill as well as luck, so you won't always pick the right option.

If you're not looking at selecting a floating donut as your fourth ruckman, then you should look at selecting one of Sam Michael, Craig Moller, Michael Apeness, Dan Currie, Tom Derickx,Fraser Thurlow, Ben Brown, Toby Nankervis or Rory Lobb, as the guys are much more likely to get games than the others, but they'll cost you a bit more than your floating donut options.

In my opinion, I'd look to save the cash and go for a floating donut, in Max King. I think it will be more beneficial to your side and it's rare that you actually need to use your fourth ruckman on-field and you will be left behind if you don’t use the captain loophole, as most other teams are getting two chances to pick their captain, while you'll only get one, unless you have another player who isn't playing.

What do you think? Will you go for a floating donut in Max King or Jason Holmes, or will you pick a ruckman who's likely to get games this season such as Dan Currie or Toby Nankervis? Leave a comment below :)

Great write up as always Conca Truck. I love reading your posts, very informative. :thumbsu:

I'll most likely be going with Thurlow and King as my R3 and R4 at the moment.

Agree that the floating donut is a critical component in your side in terms of using the captains loophole. ;)

Unless there is two really good rookies (which is highly doubtful) I'd probably generate cash before using the loophole. If they all seem fairly unlikely to play then take a shot in the dark at R3 and lock King into R4.

Anyone considering a 2nd floating doughnut? This one not so much for VC loophole, but an Emergency loophole that covers 2 positional lines. Perhaps a M/F to alternate between the mids and forwards as required, so to collect any unexpected huge bench scores in the mids or forward bench...it doesn't necessarily have to be a season long doughnut, maybe a 117k rookie like Honeychurch who might get games later in the season but who most likely won't play before his teams bye. That or a season long doughnut 102k M/F like Spina....

You magnificent bastard

It's noting new mate. A few of us here did this in the second half of last season. I've never tried it with my initial selections though.

No chance of any doughnut's in my starting side. This is something I normally look at after 6-7 rounds when a couple of my starting rookies are close to maxed out in cash generation. IMO starting with doughnut's is just costing you cash.

Yeh I realise that. But on the other hand I missed out on 200-300 points in the first 6-7 rounds last year when my mid and forward emergencies scored 100-120's and the rookie(s) I had on the field scored 40-60's

would love to but even thats too ballsy for me, I'll unfortunately end up with it when i run outta trades later in the season and am stuck with non-playing players

Interesting idea Gingy with starting with a second floating doughnut on the mid/forward bench.

The idea definitely has some merit to it I think in terms of gaining the lost points off the bench using the emergency loophole. :thumbsu:

someone posted a list of each teams "late" games, like Melb has 12 Sun/Mon games, does anyone know which thread it is in?

A lot of people use the R4 position for the captain loophole opportunity each week.

This ruck player needs to be in a team that plays later in any round so that you can swap the 'C' on him, on or off, depending on how your selected VC performs earlier in the round.

So for interests purpose, I went through the draw to see which club has more 'later' games, to hopefully identify a team from which to choose a R4.

To make it simple, I tallied up how many teams played in the last 3 games (2 games for split rd/bye weeks) of each round. Not an exact science of the way some rounds work, but on the whole, it predominantly meant the 3 games on a Sunday. This usually leaves enough time from the Sat Night games, into Sunday morning to decide on if they want their VC option or to swap their C option off the R4 (who would be 'playing' at R2).

Tally (doesn't include rd 23 as it isn't set);

WBulldogs - 12
Melb - 10
St.K - 9
WCE - 9
Carl - 8
Freo - 8
North - 8
Ade - 7
Geel - 7
Haw - 7
Bris - 6
Coll - 6
GWS - 6
GCS - 5
Port - 5
Rich - 5
Ess - 4
Syd - 4

Interesting thing is that there is no rookie ruck for WBulldogs to place at R4, so this puts a line through them.

Next club down Melb, does have a rookie ruck to put at R4 - Max King. And what's even better is that he is priced at 102k!

Without knowing Melbourne's list, I would assume at his price he is a rookie listed player, who would be unlikely to get elevated unless a few of Jamar, Gawn, Fitzpatrick, Spencer & Clark all went down (happy to stand corrected on this).

So I went one step further to see how many times, when Melb isn't in the final 3 games, that Coll or Gold Coast play prior to them. The thinking here is that 'majority' would use a combination of Pendles and GAJ for their captains loophole.

Collingwood have 7 games where they play prior to Melb, GCS only have 3. In other words, 7 times where Pendles plays before Melb and 8 where GAJ plays after Melb plays (in the 11 games where Melb isn't playing last 3rd of the round).

Also noted, Melb only plays Coll & GCS once each, GCS on Sunday in rd 5 and Coll on a Monday in rd 12.

The 'tricky' rounds are rds 8 (Coll & GCS bye), rd 10 (Melb bye) and rds 17 & 18 where both Coll & GCS play after Melb.

Max King should gather a lot of interest I believe.
