A post by TheGreatGrundy about players stagnating at Collingwood got me thinking about how I would assess each player's performance. Most supporters recognise that the ability levels of players differ, and as such my assessment in based on the individual development of each player in terms of what would reasonably be expected of them. I have used a simple 3 tier system of:

A: Exceeded expectations
B: Met expectations
C: Below expectations

Fasolo: A
Dwyer: C
Macaffer: Injured
Grundy: A
Elliott: C
Goldsack: B
Kennedy: C
Langdon: A
White: C
Pendlebury: B
Blair: B
Scharenberg: B
Adams: A
Young: C
Witts: C
Brown: A
Marsh: B
Varcoe: A
Greenwood: C
Reid: C
Freeman: injured
Sidebotton: B
Keeffe: suspended
Thomas: suspended
Crisp: A
Williams: A
Armstrong: C
Sinclair: injured
Broomhead: B
Moore: A
Ramsay: B
Cloke: C
Karnezis: C
Toovey: B
De Goey: A
Swan: A
Maynard: B
Goodyear: C
Seedsman: C
Oxley: C
Frost: B
Manteit: C
Abbott: injured
Gault: C
Cox: B

11 players exceeded expectations. Of those, Swan, Varcoe and Brown will probably not exceed their performance in 2016, the rest have potential for further improvement.
12 players met expectations. Of those, Blair, Toovey, Frost and Goldsack will probably not exceed their performance in 2016, the rest, including A grade players in Pendlebury and Sidebottom, have potential for further improvement.
16 players did not meet expectations. Some of those players have already been delisted. Of the ones who remain, White and Gault will probably not exceed their performance in 2016. The rest, including A grade players in Cloke, Elliott and Reid, have potential for further improvement.

We have a lot of players who have significant room for improvement. To make the finals next year we must have at least 20 players exceed expectations. Cloke, Elliott, Reid, Sidebottom and Pendlebury must be amongst them along with further development from Fasolo, Grundy, Langdon, Scharenberg, Adams, Marsh, Greenwood, Crisp, Williams, Broomhead, Moore, Ramsay, De Goey, Maynard and Witts. Hit that 20 and we are back in September.

Lol at Fasolo exceeding expectations. Wasn't he dropped?

I think he responded well to it and raised his game to a higher level. He still has room for further improvement.

What were you expecting from White if he was below those expectations?

When I have got outside and done the jobs I had set myself to do before BF distracted me, I will mull over your ratings. You are going to make me wish that I had never made the comment about stagnating. You will notice that I fairly readily conceded ground on my spur of the moment remark, and my examples were not directed specifically at current movements e.g. Paul Williams and Rhys Shaw.

White almost met expectations. He just does not quite get there and unfortunately I don't think he ever will on a consistent basis.

You were expecting way too much of him then, he had a career best year this year (which I realise is more of an indictment on his career than a testament to how good he was this year)

I look at his athletic capabilities and expect more from him.

A: Exceeded expectations
B: Met expectations
C: Below expectations ...

Fasolo: A
Dwyer: C
Macaffer: Injured
Grundy: A B ... There were sky high expectations, barely met them.
Elliott: C
Goldsack: B
Kennedy: C
Langdon: A
White: C
Pendlebury: B
Blair: B ... Blair was an 'A' first part of the season then faded.
Scharenberg: B A ... Didn't expect him to play (see McCaffer), so he gets an 'A' for getting on the park.
Adams: A
Young: C
Witts: C
Brown: A
Marsh: B
Varcoe: A
Greenwood: C
Reid: C injured ... (Surely if Sinclair can claim injury, then Reid can too)
Freeman: injured
Sidebotton: B
Keeffe: suspended
Thomas: suspended
Crisp: A
Williams: A
Armstrong: C
Sinclair: injured
Broomhead: B
Moore: A B ... Had one great game (see Seedsman) but over the season he just met (high) expectations
Ramsay: B injured ... Don't think it'd be fair to grade his 2015 performance
Cloke: C
Karnezis: C
Toovey: B
De Goey: A
Swan: A
Maynard: B A ... Exceeded my expectations by simply getting a game!
Goodyear: C B ... Did pretty much everything pick 48's of the draft are expected to in their first season.
Seedsman: C
Oxley: C A ... Either you're harsh or had high expectations. Far exceeded mine.
Frost: B
Manteit: C
Abbott: injured A ... Did enough in the games he played to exceed my expectations.
Gault: C
Cox: B A ... Far exceeded my expectations!

He's a flat track bully. Plays well against the shit teams (such as Carlton and Melbourne) then goes missing against the good teams.

Only 2 I would change, greenwood, injured and Oxley either A or B

Agree with assessments except for
Fasolo B still can't do the simple stuff
Witts B held his own against some dominant ruckmen, still developing
Greenwood Injured, games played B
Reid injured Games played B

Agree on most except for Fasolo and Frost and maybe Goldsack.
Fasolo is a B at best, what he produced should be the expectation at a minimum for a player of his talent, workrate lifted in the second half of the year but has a long way to go, he should watch Mark LeCras play to see where he needs to get to.

Frost started out well but dropped off to the point he was costing us games and had to be dropped himself.

If Goldsack met expectations then it is a sad indictment on some of our depth areas.
He brings very very little to the table and goes missing for massive parts of games.

I stopped reading after I saw Fasolo rated "A" ....... FMD the most over rated player on our list. Very lazy..... Flat track bully..... Would not be disappointed if the Prince of Perth was traded back their.

I think I only changed 5 to the OP. Downgraded Fasolo from A to B, upgraded Cox from B to A, White from C to B, Maynard from B to A, and Oxley from C to B.

White had a career best year in terms of goals kicked and was good when he helped in the ruck. If you were expecting him to do more than this given his exposed form as a mature player when we got him from Sydney; then the real problem is your expectations were obviously significantly out of skew with reality. Hoping someone will magically morph into a gun player is not a good basis for forming expectations.

Bucks expected more. Why else did he get dropped late in the season?

I actually have no idea why he got dropped for Moore for the Hawthorn game. Still puzzled with that one. I guess it worked out ok in the end though because now we know Moore is a player. But that was mid season (not late) and he came back and played well at the end of the season. He got dropped repeatedly every year at Sydney so I think Bucks probably realized this was a very likely thing to expect when he brought him across as a mature player.
