I thought I'd get this thread up super early before many of us go into hibernation for the summer (although with our peak activity occurring over trade/draft period perhaps it isn't much of an issue at the moment).

A couple years ago we got some really fantastic reviews done by posters, which can be found here: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/2013-player-reviews.1032657/ and I'd love to see us get a few reviews done this year after what has been a successful year for the most part and has seen improvement from much of the team. The reviews in that thread also make for some pretty interesting reading with a heavy focus on some of our younger kids who have now been moved on/about to be/become guns. So have a look for some nostalgia.

Doesn't have to be the specific player you advocate for (although that would be awesome if we could get every advocate making a review for their player) and we can definitely have more than one review per player - even if it's only a couple lines, or some interesting stats or even a video highlights from the saints website or YouTube page. Chuck em in and we can come back in a few years and see who made some good calls like this one

Ross has all the tools to build a fantastic career for the Saints, and no doubt will be given all the time he needs to put it together in the next couple years. A tall, inside midfielder with a lovely left foot and composure that few players have will more than make up for his lack of speed.

Seb re-signed earlier in the year along with Jack Newnes, Jimmy Webster and Dylan Roberton. And I believe it will be this group which will step up to lead us in the next few years.

I'll hopefully get one up for Whitey in the next little bit, but shotgun a player to review and go for it!

With the excitement of trade week over and the draft a few weeks off still maybe we can try and get some of these going!? I know the saints website is putting up better than usual reviews but I'd love to see some added here.

I'll start with Brandon White.

VFL Stats
13 games
14.5 disposals
3.5 marks
2.9 tackles
Named in the best 7 times

White was taken at Pick 40 in the 2015 draft. A player not many recognised the name of and had barely had time to stomach the fact that Rhys Mathieson had gone one pick prior - however thanks to Persevering Saint's top connections it was pretty clear we had no intention to take him anyway! The releasing of this video shortly after Brandon was picked up had most Saints fans loving the kid:

Brandon came to the club described as a tall half-back (we've had a few of those) with a lethal left foot and ability to play up the ground. He started the season well in Sandy colours and despite having 4 breaks (byes and resting) in his first 12 weeks he managed to impress with his use of the ball off half back - distributing with precision and providing a contest. At 188cm he's a bit of an in-between size but seems to have shown ability to be a solid 3rd man up option.

White was looking very likely to debut late in the season before pulling a hamstring early in the Round 19 match and limping off the ground, seemingly done for the year. However he managed to recover quickly and missed only 2 matches before returning to the VFL ready to impress. He played two more games in the VFL including a handy 26 touches in a losing game against Richmond and was promptly picked for selection in the final match of the year against Brisbane.

Hurt early he battled on to get 13 touches and a long goal. Showing promising signs with his left foot going at 92% disposal efficiency.

With Carlisle, Brown and a fit Webster to be added to the backline, he'll no doubt have a hard time cracking a spot in our backline in 2017 but in just his second year he's got a pretty decent skillset to have a good go at nailing a spot.

Great write up, thanks A2R.
I am very bullish about Brandon White, I just have a good feeling about him and he definitely showed something in his debut game.
I think I remember reading somewhere that the club were rapt to get him at pick 40.
If nothing else, he was worth picking up for the video alone. :)

The one, the only...

On April 14, 2015 I acted upon the word of my man grundog49 - whose ridiculously early PD had us taking him at Pick 19... Creepy - and anointed as #MyBoy a small indigenous midfielder from the Northern Knights and South Morang Football Club. Aside from his breathtaking TAC Cup stats, the kid had something, something that said to me this lad is going to be a star.

Then I saw him live rather than on a computer or TV screen, and it was love at first sight. Creative, classy, skilful; the kid was everything we needed in a draftee. His only knock? He was small. Small? So was Skilton... I said to Brett Anderson that this kid was plenty big enough, and IMO a potential Brownlow winner.

Then came the big day, 24 November 2015... The Saints entered the National Draft at Pick 18... I held my breath...

And it happened!

Jade played for the Northern Knights. He played in defence last year at 177cm playing on the smaller types. This year he went forward and played in the midfield and had a very good year. Jade went on to be Vic Metro’s most valuable player and showed his quality there at winning the ball consistently setting up the play. He has good pace, good speed, good endurance, making good decisions by right and left hand and foot. He has shown a good capability to kick a goal and he finished off the year strongly as well. He is a very exciting player.”

I was ecstatic.

But this isn't about me, this is about a young fella who hit the ground running in his first season; 18 games including a Round 1 debut at the Adelaide Oval where he joined the coveted 'first kick first goal' club.

2016 Averages:
- 15.3 disposals
- 8.1 kicks
- 7.2 handballs
- 3 tackles
- 2.7 marks
- 0.6 goals

His stats were good without being outstanding, but it was the manner in which they impacted games that held the attention.

Moment 1: Round 10 saw a comfortable win against the abject Dockers at Etihad, but what stood out to many was a spearing 20m handball to space from the Gresh. Composure, class, instinct, it showed them all.

IMG_0419.JPG

Moment 2: Round 12, and an up and about Carlscum at Etihad. The Saints are comfortably strolling to victory when this happens...

In the sound of Daisy Thomas' snapping ankles, a star is born.

IMG_0420.JPG

Moment 3: Round 14, again at Etihad on a chill Saturday night. The Saints are down by 9 points late in the game against the ladder-leading Cats, when...

giphy.gif

Time stood still... Tom Lonergan certainly did... And the crowd and wider footballing world went absolutely bananas.

It wasn't just the amazing goal itself, not the audacious baulk on 2016 Brownlow medalist Paddy Dangerfield earlier in the game, but the poise and guts shown by an 18yr old in his first season to calmly sidestep a 200-game premiership player, with everything on the line, and calmly slot a goal from the tightest of angles.

Madness.

Along with his 16 possessions and 8 I50s, the Gresh duly won the Rising Star nomination for the week and ended up finishing 6th behind Callum Mills.

IMG_0421.JPG

I'm not sure I've ever been prouder of a Saints draftee than I am of this kid. His number is even on my 2yr old's back.

IMG_0422.JPG

We will look back on 2016 as the 'birth' of a modern great, I have no doubt. Congrats on a fine season Jade.

Blake Acres
It was a season of two for Blake

Part A 1-12
Acres started the season with many believing he had played his best game for the club against Port Adelaide getting 22 disposals including 11 in 13 minutes only to be dropped for the next week. However it was the first time that Blake had actually shown an ability to dominate patches in games for the first time. However he also showed that he was still incosistant and missing at times of importance.

In round 6 against Melbourne Blake again showed an abiloty to dominate and with 28 dsosals and two goals was nominated for a risin star award. Again he showed what he is capable of with a little more midfield time.

However only 3 weeks later he was again dropped

His first half of the season was full of flashes of brilliance and inconstancy

Part B round 12-23

Whilst Acres was slower to get going in the second half of the season a reported new relatoinship with Nick Riewoldt boar fruit for the hardwork Blake was putting in. His games aginst Geelong, carlton, Sydney North Melbourne, Richmond and Brsibane all highlighted his ability to dominate games. In addition his kicking and pressure acts improved.

Blake was als regulalry getting in the top few pplayers in the game for metres gained which in conjunction with his improved disposal efficency shows how damaging Blake is with his disposal when given time. Another eleent of his play that became evident was his ability to shrug off tackles and whilst often he looked laconic and able to move through space with ease when the tackle did come he showed he was strong enough to not let the tackle stick.

Ultimately many at the start of the year had hoped Blake would be best 22 by the end of the year. On that ground his season was a resouding sucess. He has still only played 24 games and by 50 I expect his kicking and disposal in general to improved. By 100 games this is a big call but i expect him to be top 20 in the comp.

Next season i think there will still be some inconsistency here and there although his end to the season has set him up well for hopefully a big 2017. If what we found out about Blake this year was his ability to dominate games and his shrigging of takles I think we will see his contested ball wining ability and his marking this year really come to the fore.

Patience is still required but every week more and more Blake is showing glimpses and patches of the player he will be..

Seb Ross

After a difficult start to 2015 with a 10 week hamstring injury, Seb never really got going until the last 5 weeks of the season where he averaged 21 touches and 5 tackles per game. All he needed was a full pre-seaon and many were predicting Seb to finally announce himself as the player we'd seen glimpses of in his first 4 years at the club. And announce himself he did!

Stats:
Disposals: 26.4
Marks: 4.3
Tackles: 4.4
SC: 92.4

Seb started the year with a bang notching up 30 touches (a career high at that point) in the first game of the season and he hardly looked back. Playing every game this year he would top 30 touches in 8 games and had only 4 games below 24 touches showing his consistency. In fact Seb's rise was one of the most prolific in the competition:

saints.com.au said:
Ross, 23, is averaging 26.7 possessions from 16 games in 2016, acquiring the same amount of leather as Jordan Lewis, Jack Viney and Bryce Gibbs to be ranked 30th in the AFL for average possessions.

Of the crop who have won more ball than Ross this season, none have made a more dramatic rise in terms of possessions, with his rise of 8.5 more per game than his previous best average eclipsing Lachie Hunter (+7.9) and Zach Merrett (+6.4).

Ross quickly became known for his gracefulness and composure with the ball, teamed up with a lethal left foot he rarely wasted a possession, with the following highlights reel showing some of his best (Thanks to 12Chill!). Another player which goes to show that pace isn't everything when you can make the game slow down around you!

Seb's year ultimately culminated in the Ian Stewart Medal for BOG against Richmond, 10 Brownlow votes and a nomination for the AFLPA MVP alongside club champions Jack Steven and Nick Riewoldt.

Similar to David Armitage the next question is whether Seb can match his 2016 and follow it up with an equally good or better 2017. With the improvement of others such as Hickey, Membrey and Weller and a developing midfield made up of Newnes, Dunstan, Billings, Acres, Steele and Armo and Steven as the experienced heads; another fantastic year from Seb will go a long way to seeing the Saints play finals in 2017.

Hey guys, how do you see Koby Stevens fitting in the side this year?

If he's injury free he'll walk into our midfield, if he struggles with injury then obviously that's trouble.

Smokey for Supercoach forward?

I reckon he could take Luke Dustan's spot in the midfield if fit and would be great smokey. I reckon Jack Billings could be another good forward, he should be set for a big year and if they have Acres as a forward should get more mid time and increase numbers dramatically.

What was Greshs original number , I've forgotten already. Unfortunately some pics don't work anymore but that probably because they are old . A great review Barrels. Does your son still have his number on his back ?

Oh I just saw his old number 22 , does your son have 22 or 4 now ?
