Top academy prospects for 2017 Draft

Jack Powell
15/7/99
180cm/75kg
Ainslie/Canberra Demons
Midfielder

"Jack's a very clever footballer who is extremely good in traffic. He has nice, neat skills with his hands and feet, and he just knows where to find the space even when there's not a lot of it. He's still developing his aerobic capabilities as a midfielder but he can also play that role as a small forward as well."

Nathan Richards
11/2/99
200cm/102kg
Griffith Swans
Ruckman

"Nathan's a developing ruckman who is very competitive. He's not your ruckman who is over 200cm in size, but his competitiveness brings him into the contest. He jumps in and knows how to use his body. He comes from a bit of a basketball background so his hands and his awareness in and around traffic are pretty good. He's a boy from Griffith who has relocated to Sydney this year as part of the academy."

Brendan Myers
10/2/99
183cm/80kg
Wagga Tigers
Midfielder

"An inside midfielder who is just great at winning clean ball around the contest. He's a very good clearance player but he also has the ability to mark the ball extremely strongly overhead, and therefore becomes a dangerous forward. He played some NEAFL footy last year as a 17-year-old as well as spending some time back at Wagga Tigers. He's a real footy nut and always has a ball in his hand."

Nicholas Shipley
25/6/99
190cm/90kg
St George
Utility

"Nick's a western Sydney boy who transferred over to Australian football from soccer when he was 15. He's athletic and a utility type of player who can be used in a number of spots – half-back, half-forward and in the midfield. He has great endurance and speed, and has really developed a nice bit of his game around his kicking."

Many of us are going to read alot of media spin about the will he/wont he stay arguements and the always enjoyable barrett sliding doors BS. Not to mention the countless Bigfooty drivel about how our players are done deals to join opposition clubs in june. How about we reflect on all the players that have chosen to stay loyal despite big money offers to head interstate.

Matt de Boer came through the National Draft. Don't those who get drafted get two year minimums?

And you don't need to be out of contract for the speculation to reach insanity point on BF.

And my god, but this thread is early.

I waited around last offseason for someone else to make one but gives us a running update of potential re-signings over the off season.

I put De Boer in there due to him being red in the contracts thread

Only the first time draftees and those who nominate contract terms have a minimum of two year contracts. MDB definitely doesn't fit the former, and given he just wanted to get drafted he probably doesn't fit the latter either.

Top academy prospects for 2017 Draft

Charlie Spargo
Inside Midfielder/Small Forward (Murray Bushrangers/NSW-ACT)
25/11/1999 | 175cm | 75kg

Nearly 18 months out from the 2017 draft, Charlie Spargo is already touted as one of the best players for next year. Spargo has spent most of 2016 inside 50 for the Bushrangers and for NSW/ACT, kicking five goals in the TAC Cup. His Under 16 championships last year was impressive, where he won the Alan McLean Medal as the best player in the Division Two carnival and the MVP for NSW/ACT. Spargo averaged 29 disposals and kicked five goals in the two games and is tied with the GWS Giants academy. Spargo has AFL ties in his blood, his father Paul played 90 AFL games for Brisbane Bears and North Melbourne. Spargo is a high impact player and has a good burst of pace in the midfield, showing spark around the contest. Despite playing just the one game for NSW/ACT in this years Under 18 championship, he was selected in the Allies squad. Spargo also had 13 disposals on NEAFL debut earlier in the year and is a name to listen out for over the next 18 months.

Jack Powell
Balanced Midfielder/Small Forward (Ainslie/NSW-ACT)
15/07/1999 | 179cm | 73kg

Jack Powell is another NSW/ACT player tied with the GWS Giants. Powell spent most of his time in the Under 16 championships last year playing forward, with an impressive three goal haul against Tasmania . Powell has gradually moved into the midfield, where he averaged 18 disposals in the Under 18 Division Two carnival in 2016. Powell’s strong performance saw him picked in the Allies squad where he was selected in their opening game. The hard working midfielder was one of the Rams’ best players in their TAC Cup clash against Dandenong Stingrays in April. Powell had 26 disposals and kicked two goals that day in a strong showing. The tough Canberra based midfielder has the uncanny ability to win lots of the football and push forward to kick goals.

Nathan Richards
Ruckman (Griffith/NSW-ACT)
01/02/1999 | 197cm | 99kg

Giant ruckman Nathan Richards has the potential to be one of the best ruckman in the 2017 draft pool. Linked with GWS, Richards has a basketball background that helps him at the stoppages where he impressed as the NSW/ACT number two ruckman in the Under 18 championships. Playing second fiddle to Max Lynch, Richards gave the midfielders good supply with his tap work. Richards rucked well in the U16 championships, including a best on ground display against Queensland. Richards positions himself well at the stoppages, but does need to work on his impact around the ground.

Jarrod Brander
Key Position Forward (Bendigo Pioneers/NSW-ACT)
11/02/1999 | 193cm | 93kg

Key Position Forward Jarrod Brander looms as one of the early tall prospects for the 2017 draft. Brander is currently on a scholarship to Geelong Grammar in Victoria, where he kicked 28 goals as a Year 10 in the First XVIII competition. Brander kicked four goals in the U16 Championships playing inside 50 for NSW/ACT, making it into the Level One AFL Academy. Brander suffered a knee injury and has missed a large portion of this season recently returning to school football. Brander is one to keep a real close eye on next season.

Alex Paech
Key Position Utility (Murray Bushrangers/NSW-ACT)
17/06/1999 | 195cm | 104kg

Alex Paech is one of the most intriguing prospects for the 2017 draft. Paech weighs over 100kg and out muscles his opponents at both ends of the ground. Paech has played mostly in defence for the Bushrangers this season in the TAC Cup but can work forward and through the ruck. Paech was named in the best twice for NSW/ACT in the Under 16 championships enabling him to be selected in the Level One AFL Academy. His second and third efforts are good in defence and he rebounds the ball well. For Paech to improve his mobility expect him to trim down throughout the next 18 months prior to the draft where he could be one of the best swingmen in the system. Paech is yet another NSW/ACT player linked with the GWS Giants and their academy.

BRING ON SEASON 2017!!!!!!!!

Players that have re-signed!
Useful reference for people like me with a failing mèmory. Tks for posting.

I want to re-sign Kelly the most. Feel as if Shiel will leave for more money than we can afford but at least we'll get something decent in return

Thanks for putting this up. RE player retention, best to assume nothing as it is invariably a surprise either way.

Very interesting RE the draft position and likely penalty.

Based on this year the AFL will not punish us for traded in picks meaning at worst they can take our 1st round pick and a 4th rounder.

If you consider any future picks in 2017 will be traded in selections it makes our stance and the outcome achieved seem very favourable.

I don't think we can assume any logic about what the AFL might do :-(

Bolded are my flight risks, I don't think we have plenty unless that AFLPA do a crap job of negotiating the new deal, which seems unlikely..

Who will choose to stay loyal to Leon and the Greater Western Sydney Giants?

Senior List
#02 Jacob Hopper - Make or break year for him at the giants, but would be best 22 most other clubs

#05 Dylan Shiel
#10 Devon Smith
#12 Jonathan Patton
#15 Matt Kennedy
#17 Steve Johnson - Not moved, retired.
#20 Adam Tomlinson
#21 Matt Buntine
#22 Josh Kelly
#26 Dawson Simpson - Delisted
#27 Harrison Himmelberg
#29 Zac Williams
#30 Matt Flynn
#31 Jeremy Finlayson
#40 Adam Kennedy
#24 Matt De Boer - Delisted

Rookie List
#00
Joel Patfull
#38 Daniel Lloyd
#50 Sam Reid - Delisted
#25 Tendai M'Zungu - Delisted

#42 Jake Stein
#28 Zac Sproule

Overall, I think the guys will stick solid unless our cap makes it impossible.

I see A.Kennedy being more of a flight risk than hopper. With the departure of Steele and suspension of Whitfield he is now best 22 lock.

I'll have a quiet toast to Bunts and a minute of silence if he goes. Love his heart and courage. Hope he can find a spot next year, if not cant begrudge him going to someone who has one.
Just in a discussion with a Bulldogs flog on the main board amazed at the thought we wouldn't want Matt Boyd. They just do not begin to get it.

Jack Powell is a jet. Well balanced midfielder capable of both winning his own footy and clean distribution. Biggest wrap on him is his overhead marking, when I played him (he was playing 4 years up) he was used as a mobile marking CHF (despite being tiny) and was BOG.

Bit of a Heeney clone is what ive seen him described as.

Spargo, brander, Powell and Richards are set to spend a stint training with us in a similar placement program to hopper, sproule, Setterfield, mutch and macreadie

The AFL need to sort this Brander thing out, no good waiting until a week before the draft to say he's ineligible. Everything I've read suggests he is 100% in our zone and has been part of the Academy for a good period, unlike Marshall.

Being a key forward we need to know his eligibility early as we are making decisions on keys coming off contract and we need to know if he may be part of our thinking.

I think for the most part the AFL do a good job but there is a feeling of policy on the run sometimes.

If they give him the green light then I expect the zone to reduce for 2018

Throw away line here in an article about our uncontracted guys but hopefully along with what I heard with Williams theres a fair bit of truth to it

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-12-...e-to-resign-fantastic-five?platform=hootsuite
There might be some celebratory drinks and yelling (maybe a nudie run) should these 2 re-sign early.
Am really worried about this years group. Thinking we may lose 1 or 2 biggies. Gut feel.

If we win a Premiership, I think Shiel will go back to Melbourne - we won't be able to afford to keep him and Cogs and Ward. I don't think he'll leave until we do or our window slams shut. Cogs is being groomed for captaincy so he's more likely to stay.
