Some scouting notes from Vic Country vs Allies ("stolen" from AFL Draft Central) :

Sam Walsh
Gun. Just looked a class above out there and you can see why clubs will be lining up for his services come years-end. He has good speed, acceleration and is composed under pressure and has an ability to kicks goals as well. He had two in the first half and won the footy at will. Walsh was strong overhead and a quick thinker. Danced around the opposition on the wing, had a few ‘Pendlebury’ moments. Was rested midway through the third quarter and earned it too after a superb performance.

Keidean Coleman (181cm/74kg)
Played a mixture of defence and midfield and looked a bit surer in the midfield. When kicking out of full-back he made a few errors by foot, but was better on the run with time and space. He looked more composed when through the middle and was good one-on-one in marking contests. Put in a piercing kick going inside 50 lowering the eyes to McFayden for the latter’s fourth goal. His best was good, just needed more consistency in his disposal.

Thomas Matthews (184cm/82kg)
Powerful kick inside 50 found Michael Mummery in the goal square for the first goal of the game, then kicked out of full-back in the second term, putting a teammate under pressure but mopped up with a good second effort.

Ben Sloan (190cm/83kg)
Sloan got better as the game went on, he took a nice contested mark in the third quarter and finished it off with a goal. He did some good work in the midfield in the last quarter with some good clearances.

Connor McFayden (190cm/88kg)
McFayden was the standout player for the Allies kicking four goals which could have been more. His first goal was a nice long goal on the run in the second quarter, his second was when he showed great attack and snapped truly. His final two goals came in the last quarter, one after a nice one-handed mark and the other was a set shot goal from 50 metres. McFayden also played through the midfield winning some handy clearances, his attack on the ball a feature of his game all day.

Toara Marango (190cm/94kg)
Marango toiled hard down back often playing on much taller opponents and handled himself well. He took a nice intercept mark in the last quarter.

Jack Tomkinson (200cm/100kg)
Tomkinson battled hard in the ruck using his solid frame to win hit outs and impose himself at the contest. He took a nice intercept mark in the third quarter.

McCluggage, Rayner, Berry are young guns and then Bailey showing some very promising signs + Sam Walsh(maybe), mmm our midfield is building superbly.

It's high praise for McFadyen, though given it's a trial game it's not quite the same as doing it in the championships. Haven't heard much about Marango, but he was named Lions best player for the 5 games we played against Tassy, Sydney etc. It's also really good for us that Tassy is strong this year, with no go home factor involved. Quint and Marsh played in the 2nd game against Metro, so will be interesting to see how they went.

McFayden is from a cricketing background and think this year he has really focused on the AFL so his fitness isn't that of others at the moment.

McCluggage, Rayner, Berry are young guns and then Bailey showing some very promising signs + Sam Walsh(maybe), mmm our midfield is building superbly.

Walsh is beginning to be a favourite but am still interested in seeing others at the national champs before locking in. It'll be interesting to see how Saints and Suns go for the remainder of the year as I do see us finishing with 4/5 wins but the Saints have it hard for the next number of rounds.

Fitness is probably the one thing I'm glad he's sub par with at the moment - quite fixable.

I appreciate the effort these guys put in but it's crazy that these draft write-ups (almost across the board) are basically a listing of highlights. It's almost the YouTube highlight video syndrome. I don't mind Coleman's write-up but the rest are basically "he got a goal and/or an assist and/or a mark". Ok, but that's not telling me much more than stats.

I'd actually appreciate a list of what the reviewer thinks the players need to work on in preference to these, because anyone can look like a prospect if you airbrush out their 20% disposal efficiency or propensity to run in the opposite direction to the ball (purely hypothetical - I don't think Mark Blake is in this draft class).

Geelong star Sam Walsh put on a show securing 25 disposals and two goals for Vic Country, with 20 of his touches coming in the first half. Walsh, who only played the first three quarters, helped Vic Country to a six-point three-quarter time lead. With Walsh off the field, Vic Country's midfield collapsed and the Allies won the match by 27 points.

Providing a powerful marking target in the forward line, Connor McFaydenfrom the Brisbane Academy was the Allies' best in the win. The 190cm, 81kg, forward secured 17 disposals, five marks (three contested) and four goals.

Improving rapidly, Casey Voss (son of Michael) for the second successive week was Sturt's best player. The Brisbane father-son prospect helped his side to a win against West Adelaide. Voss secured 30 disposals, 12 marks, seven inside 50s and one goal. This is his first 30 disposal effort of the season. Notably, Voss has not dropped below 20 disposals since round three.

Brother of Brisbane's Charlie, West Coast NGA prospect Jarred Cameron starred for Swan Districts in their win against East Perth. The speedy forward collected 25 disposals, seven marks, five tackles, six inside 50s and two goals.

Former Under-15 All-Australian footballer, Tom Fullarton will join Brisbane in 2019 after the 19-year-old, 200cm former basketballer was promoted from the Brisbane Bullet's development squad to the full roster earlier in the off-season. He has since made the decision to return to football. The agile Fullarton played much of his junior football career as a key forward and may also at times relieve through the ruck.

I noticed in one of the articles for players to look out for at the champs there was one south aussie who had similar stats to Casey but then backed it up at reserves level before being selected in the under 18 squad. Hopefully Casey gets the chance to show what he can do at reserves level before the end of the season.

Had eight tackles and six clearances playing as an inside mid.
Surprised to see he's already 80 kilos at 183 cm tall (the same height as his dad and only 8kg lighter). He looked much lighter than that when he came up and trained with the club not too long ago I reckon.
