Because under the intention of the rules, Sydney should have lost their mid-20s pick in bidding for Blakey. They have Blakey, paid for it with picks in the 40s, and still have their pick in the 20s.

It was excellently done. It didn't break a single rule, but it absolutely broke the intention of the rules. Genius move by the Swans. The rule will be changed next year.

Trading out of your first pick for multiple later picks to match bids arguably broke the intention of the rules too. I agree with you but I'm not sure what a practical way to change the rule would be as it would just further restrict live trading which is already restricted by other requirements.
