Is this salary cap thing really true ?? Its blown me away

Cannot possibly be true , The people responsible really have major questions to answer
100% true
And all the people responsible have now been moved on

How would I know mate.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was on match payments and that's why they didn't play him because they couldn't afford it
Make sense to me now why they are not playing him , to be fair to Dew and Evans they can't clean up these mess in a year that cause by Clayton and Ashcroft.

If the salary cap issues are true, we are a mess..
its a ****ing shambles to be at our cap with the list we have and all our stars gone, plus we are delisting or trading like 10 players away and still choked up
Makes you really glad we resigned Lemmens and Schoenfeld doesn't it FFS

You hope these guys were signed up because they were taking pretty minimal money.

I wouldn't try to read too much into it, it is 1 man's recollection of how he was treated. He might not have been treated the best, but he might also remember it a lot differently to how other may do.

However, I do agree he was mishandled unfortunately came in a time of really destabilizing change in the coaching ranks and fell through the cracks. Hopefully there are lessons learnt in all this.
The interview with Barlow is up now over in the where are they now (ex Suns) thread
Would love to know your thoughts after you watch it

I am calling total bullshit. Complete and utter. How would the Herald Sun have the scoop on this when they are also reporting May to Collingwood is a done deal and that the AFL is refusing to give out priority picks? It should actually be criminal for this newspaper to publish such lies.

Do the Maths. Lynch, Rosa, Rischitelli, Barlow and likely Hall plus three rookies have no cost in 2019.

Tend to agree - all part of the continued Southern Media campaign to discourage players from wanting to relocate here. Also allows them to have a "Suns" story to run with during the slow news offseason...

This is why

If you believe Ralph.

Agree. Ralph creates the story and people including some Suns fans run with it. He is a flog who dislikes Suns. For sure he knows details about Suns salary cap. What a joke.

If that is the case looks like you / the Crows will hold onto a unhappy camper.
Okay, that's probably best for everyone.

He's not moving because he's having a child. He wants more cash. If no club willing to offer him cash is ALSO willing to trade for him, then he needs to be professional and play on. Happens every year.

The salary cap thing sounds impossible. You'll have $2m+ of players leaving.

Mark Evans and the club have been open and honest with everyone and said the club have a salary cap problem what more proof do people need

Totally agree.
Just realised how underwhelming and telling it is that our only publicly announced trade target by the club is Horlin-Smith, a bloke that cannot get a game in a side barely in 8th place and sliding - **** that's depressing

Meanwhile the Lions get Lachie Neale and St Kilda linked to some big names as well as Carlton
I'm underwhelmed if this is the one to get excited about. Hoping for better names to emerge than GHS.

For F*** sake the club have been open and honest with everyone and said the club have a salary cap problem what more proof do people need
Can you point to where the club said that. I listened to Dew's interview yesterday on AW but can't recall he said it. Happy to be proved wrong.

Ralphy quoted Dew on the interview posted above.
Dews been in Melbourne all week doing interview and has mentioned it in a few so has Evans.

I believe what the club say over a guy baiting online and trying to discredit everything I post online (not talking about you).

GOLD Coast plans to fix a surprise salary cap crunch by 2019 but will be limited in the upcoming trade period by an extremely tight cap.

The battling Suns are the last club many would expect to have a full salary cap given their lack of on-field success but have a significant wage bill in comparison to the talent on their list.

Chief executive Mark Evans has tasked new list manager Craig Cameron with fixing the problem by the 2019 season so the Suns can again be aggressive in trade discussions.

The departure of Tom Lynch to Richmond will ease some of those concerns but the Suns simply have too many players on too much money for their output.

Yeah whoever that previous list manager was really set us back a fair way...
Just comes back to competition equalisation
There's a reason FIFO miners get paid above award to work in armpit destinations
Apparently AFL workplaces are different though?
We all know the Gold Coast is a great place to live and work- but a 20 yo AFL footballer may not perceive it in the same way

Dew more or less said we have no cap room on 3AW too.
So we are paying well overs, including for people that shouldn’t even be on the list, Hall, Lemmons, Leslie etc.

It’s a ****ing disgrace

Could this be a clever tactic by the club to get Richmond to present a lesser offer for Lynch so was can easily match?

Let’s be clear if Lynch was on a million then they have to have that available in the cap

If the cap issue is true what a joke with the list we have. If we have to pay overs to every player in order for them to remain with the Suns, the AFL should raise our cap in order for us to be properly established otherwise this will just be groundhog day every season.

It's something the Club needs to address to us as members
If they're saying we have arguably the worst list going around and no cap space it's hard to see our on-field fortunes changing anytime soon
Blind Freddy could have seen that if you start a Club by using high draft pick 18yo's who are all coming off contract at the same time this sort of scenario was a possibility
Still want to hear it from the horse's mouth though

Isn't it a requirement for every club to pay 95% of the cap every year?

So that in itself means that many clubs are paying more to players than they are worth.

5% of the cap can be 'banked' but that is only $550k approx, so not a lot of room.

So a bit of back ending into any given future year and it can get tight pretty quick.

Was thinking this too. You literally have to be within 5% of full salary cap

You don't need to paid over for new dratees for their first 2 years .
Eg Bowes , Ainsworth , Brodie , Scrimshaw get 100k a year in 2017 and 2018 , but their salary increase to 400k will be in 2019,2020. 1.2 M will be the amount you are looking at .
