Hi all

Noticed a few others here seem to keep up with the NAB League Girls and thought it'd be worth having a space to discuss the NAB League and hopefully watchers of SANFLW, WAFLW and the northern state leagues can contribute here as well

I'm currently writing for AFL Draft Central, trying to get to at least 2 NAB League Games a week with my role and slowly making a rankings for this years draft prospects, although it's difficult.

This is my twitter

I often do updates for the games I'm at and am always happy to have discussion there as well.

Looking at the VIC prospects this year, from what I've seen I'm fairly confident in saying Charlie Rowbottom is my number 1, with Prespakis obviously not far behind, and then Slender a little further out after that.

Charlie Rowbottom over Prespakis?? I would have thought after Prespakis won the nab league girls as a bottom ager, she would be number 1.
Haven't heard of Rowbottom until this year, what team does she play for?

Rowbottom plays for the Chargers, is the sister of Sydney's James

I've started giving her the nickname of Charlie Fyfe or Charlie Bontempelli, very solid ball winner in the midfield with surprisingly good skills for an inside leaning midfielder. I have her just ahead because she's at that 178 cm where she can be a genuine Number 1 Key Forward as well as a dominant midfielder, in a similar way to Ellie McKenzie, except Charlie is better aerially and better at winning contested footy.
This isn't to take away from Georgie, realistically I'm probably holding her to too high expectations, watched her today and she genuinely won Calder the game in the 4th quarter against Pioneers, so really, it's a very small margin I have Rowbottom ahead, it boils down to her height and power in comparison to Georgie

So, I'm using an Android emulator to stream games through the NAB League app onto my PC. Not ideal, but better than watching on my tiny phone. Last year I was able to watch at least part of all the games thanks to YouTube streams, but those aren't happening anymore. The app's not in the best state either. Last week we didn't get any streams at all (maybe due to lockdown), so I'm at least thankful I can watch again. I had been very much looking forward to Calder v Oakleigh. We're not getting live updating stats anymore and results are kind of hard to come by. As of ~10PM, the results of two of today's games still aren't on there. The Calder game says 'Telstra customers can stream live, fast & data-free' which is new.

I watched the Falcons beat the Ranges this morning. Geelong was the better team. Renee Tierney was probably BOG. Keeley Sherar, who I haven't noticed before, was really good for the Ranges. Started on a wing, I believe, and moved into the centre at times. Very mobile and a better kick than most. Liv Meagher seemed to spend the first six minutes of the fourth quarter on the bench, which is an interesting decision, if you're trying to win a football match.

Hopefully I can watch some Rebels v Rays tomorrow.

It's been frustrating, it's impossible to watch it on the iphone. The app is okay but the sometimes the quarter/final scores are wrong such as (RD1 - 2019: Dand v ERanges)

I believe they said last week's went unstreamed due to "technical difficulties" so make of that what you will. I'll be chromecasting rebels v rays to my tv so at least I'll get a decent view.
The apps poor to say the least, the coverage outside of stats really needs work imo, even just a single paragraph on each game would do in comparison to what they have now

Calder v Bendigo was a much better quality game than I anticipated, expected a fairly comprehensive Cannons win so to see them behind until the 4th was surprising. Gillard was out which left the Calder forward line weak, I don't think any of their forwards took a mark outside of Prespakis, and maybe Manfre in the 4th. Yassir played like she was nursing an injury as well which is comcerming with Northern coming up on Thursday.

Slender BOG splitting her time between CHF and Rover, even had a run in the ruck on occasion. She's an exceptional mark obviously, easily top 3 in the comp with Friend probably pipping her. I don't see a lot of plaudits for her kicking/ decision making, but there wasn't a single disposal she chose the wrong option for today, was only really let down by her team mates occasionally.

Prespakis was played in forward and defense for the first 3 quarters so didn't have the biggest impact until the 4th when she was moved into the guts again, she won them the game off her own boot in the last. She's making a habit of shaking off opponents trying to tackle her, it's really quite exciting to watch.

GWV v Dandenong wasn't really a massive game for 2021 eligible girls, Chloe Leonard had a particularly good game as did Ashleigh Richards, but neither did anything we didn't already know they could do.

Move Emily Shepherd up into Pick 1 contention for 2022 alongside Ham, Baskaran and Hipwell, she's just a class above with ball in hand compared to anyone around her

The program I'm using to watch it on desktop is called BlueStacks, if you (or anyone else) needs an emulator. I even figured how to get it fully fullscreen by the end of today's game. I think it was 3QT that whoever was running the stream realised they were broadcasting their windows taskbar. None of which I particularly mind. I get that they're not going to do a professional level broadcast. I just want my YouTube streams back.

I could live with no stream but an upload to YouTube a day or so later, I want to see more than 1 game a day god damnit!

I still want the first half of Northern v Geelong from last year. I know they have it. They used it in their highlight packages at the draft.
Fat chance you get it unfortunately, they need a really big push to get anything :tearsofjoy:

Vacuous Space any thoughts on Rays v Rebels? Players you liked?

This Dandenong team seems stacked. I don't know if it's the level of competition or whether it's the fact that Tyanna Smith isn't around anymore running circles around everyone, but I thought Dandy had a much more even contribution than last year's games. I didn't realise Shepherd was such a big deal. I had to look up what number she was last year. I remember 61, but she's clearly taken a big step up. The red haired brigade was pretty impressive (possibly, in part, because there were so many girls with red hair). Amber Clarke is obviously a special player. I don't remember Mackenzie Eardley, though, and you'd think I would with that height and that hair. I thought she showed really good mobility for a girl of that size.

I really liked Zoe Hill and particularly Abbey Jordan of the players that missed out on being drafted for the Rays. There was a passage where Jordan took the kickout, hit a target at the top of the 50, followed up and got a handball and kicked it to the wing. In general, I'm loving the change to U19s. Leonard was definitely one of GWV's best - it's not just the sleeves. I wonder if we couldn't go even further and change the comp to U20s. It might help the country teams be more competitive.

I hadn't seen Dojiok forward before. I'd seen her play back and a few minutes of her playing in the midfield against Geelong in round 1. I think she might have played some wing last year. I want to see more of the forward stuff - maybe at the champs, if they happen. I like Lilli Condon a lot. I don't know if she's too small to get drafted, but she's really good at this level. I can't think of any other Rebels who really stood out. I definitely faded as this game went on, so if anyone saved their best for the fourth quarter, I may have missed it.

Most of Dandes best contributors are 04 births as well, so they'll likely maintain this level of strength for next season. The other from the Rebels I really liked was Paige Scott, a lot classier than I expected for a contested mid

Run down of the past weekends action

reporting on the reshuffled Round 2 games will be interesting, can't say I know how we're gonna go about it unfortunately.

Really appreciate the work you guys do keeping us informed on the upcoming girls.

Does anyone know if Dojiok is tied to the Dogs academy and how the new rules work for the girls draft? I'd love to get her to the kennel - even if we just have to draft her.

I'm pretty sure AFLW doesn't have an NGA bidding system like the mens league which means there'll be no right of refusal (if I'm right). I'd assume clubs are happier to go with 'handshake' agreement type deals in AFLW though, say other clubs won't pick her until after the bulldogs have had the chance to type thing

This is something I need to look into though, so take it with a grain of salt

Thanks for the response.
It does seem like that sort of understanding does occur more in the AFLW.

It'd be good to see her at the dogs regardless of connection, her and Hartwig being that KPP height whilst having the speed and agility of smalls would be a very dangerous duo for a long time. I'm struggling to come up with a rankings order outside of the top 3, but she's certainly in my mix for the next 5-6 girls outside of that

Hi. just wanted to look at the WAFLW side of things. Kate Bartlett has kicked seven goals from two games. West Coast signed Bartlett in their inaugural season and she didn't play one game. Then they delisted Bartlett and now have no key targets up forward. Hayley Bullas was the Eagles' leading scorer last season with 2 goals. The tradition has carried on this year, as the only personal kicking multiple goals are midfielders.

This team is in dire needs of key forward targets. I believe West Coast can sign Bartlett as a delisted free agent before the draft. She is a must sign before heading into the next season.

I understand this is because she was deemed a one trick pony? From what Ive seen of her in the WAFLW, I wouldn't be opposed to giving her a go certainly.

They should make a rule about former U18 All Australians, don't drop them. The talent is obviously there, but there are some coaches that seem to have no idea what to do with them.

There's too many variables to say that imo, especially in AFLW when there's such a commitment requirement outside of the training because it's part-time, some people just don't have the motivation or ability to be doing the extras, at that stage your talent is kind of redundant

Talent is never redundant. Especially when you see footballers get dropped and they bust their asses in the seconds to prove they are superior to the rest with no pay.

Also, even though AFLW is a part-time job, they are still getting paid $32,077-17,473 a season depending on their tier (And payments rise each year). For players that don't make finals and are on minimum wage, it's still $1,941 a week. Not bad for part-time.
