First Quarter

Grundy v Ladhams, Tyler Brown is up against the eventual brownlow medallist in Wines, Crisp v Houston and Adams (back in the side) against Boak.

Wings - WHE v Amon and Poulter v Bonner. De Goey up forward against McKenzie, Cameron v Allir, Checkers v Jonas and Sidey v Hartlett down back its IQ v Rozee, Noble v Motlop and Roughie (also back in the team) v Dixon

Observations -

*Darcy Cameron kicks our second goal of the match. When you watch the behind the goals vision then credit must go to Grundy. It shows why instead of being put on the bench Grundy should be put up forward. As Roughie kicks the ball up the wing to Pendles who marks. Grundy/Ladhams Cameron/Allir are all bunched up together about 40m from goal. When Pendles marks about 70m from goal and goes to handball to Roughie, Grundy starts to run back to our goals and that drags Ladhams with him - creates about 10m for Cameron to be one v one with Allir. Grundy points for the kick to go to the corridor and has physically engaged with Ladhams. De Goey has also dragged McKenzie up the field. Cameron reads the kick well and has the space to lead into. Ladhams has no chance and does not attempt to make the contest. Mark to Cameron - GOAL COLLINGWOOD.

Contrast that to last week where Sydney were able to use Hickey/McClean to plug the hole and Gold Coast used Graham to work back into defence as a spare.

*Both Grundy and Cameron drop back into defence at various stages to help out.

*Port started to stem the flow by getting back better on defence and they moved Robbie Gray into the midfield on Crisp.

End of Quarter

Second Quarter

Observations -

*Adams returns to the field after leaving in the first quarter with a knee injury. Port have moved Powell Pepper from the forward line into the midfield against Adams.

*De Goey, Cameron and Checkers all lead to the same spot - 30m from goal in corridor - makes it easy for Allir to spoil.

*Best Grundy has moved - actually getting to dangerous spots on the ground and presenting.

*Dixon has a stint in the ruck and does quite well (much better than Ladhams) against Grundy. Ladhams returns and is now more against Cameron and takes a couple strong marks. The second mark is on the wing after Mayne clears the ball from our defence. (Port still goalless) At this stage Maynard is playing on Robbie Gray who is in our forward line. Farrell is about 40m from goal all by himself. At this stage Georgiades enters the Port 50m and Poulter is following him. Tom Wilson is on Motlop in the corridor about 50m from goal. It appears that Farrell is on Roughhead. Ladhams just kicks long into about 40m from goal and the numbers are even. Geogriades decides to go for the mark (Poulter is about 10m away) Moore gets the big fist in. At that stage Gray appears to have lost Maynard (Maynard is 10m behind the pack by himself) and perhaps Mayne is responsible for him. Bonner gets the ball at about 55m from the Moore punch and kicks the ball more into the corridor this time. (At this stage i would have expected maybe Cameron, Daicos or WHE who are at the 50m to take Gray and the other spare Port player). Maynard has made the decision (correctly so) to go after the ball. We look like having a 3 on 2 contest. Poulter/Maynard (30m from Ports goal) against Farrell with Mayne about 20m from Ports goal. Farrell puts a good move on Poulter and avoids his tackle. Maynard does not look like influencing the contest. Farrell is near the pocket and looks in the corridor and has two viable options, one of which is Gray. IQ is trailing the two Port players (Georgiades and Gray) and is in between them but trying to make up the ground. The kick is perfect and Gray marks. Cameron tries to make the contest but is too late. GOAL PORT.

Brilliant play from Farrell who at this stage is one of their better players but we should have at least manned up Gray and made it a contest. WHE is standing there about 20m from the contest. At least Cameron made an effort to get back.

*SPP and Gray tend to go to Daicos at centre bounces and around the ground. Whether they believe he has is the least defensive minded of our mids? They have used a defensive player in Houston to shut down Crisp.

*SPP is at the bottom of the pack that causes the stoppage on the wing. Tom Wilson and Grundy apply the tackle. I believe that Tom Wilson is responsible for SPP. SPP gets up and jogs towards the Port end of the ground by himself (Wilson does not bother to track him). One interesting tactic is when Wines nominated to take the ruck against Grundy. Wines essentially just uses his body and strength to keep Grundy away from contesting the ball. Adams is on the side where Grundy is. Burton is not even looking at the contest and just blocks Pendles to keep a space for Wines. The ball drops in front of Wines who picks it up and charges out of the contest. Crisp who was at the stoppage is trying to get to Wines but is being held back by Farrell. Wines is too strong and Burton puts another block on Pendles to keep him away. Lachie Jones (Callum Brown is opponent) is now running past and receives the handball, (Wilson is sucked into that contest) he ends up being good enough to get the ball inside Ports 50m. It is noticeable that WHE had about a 20m head start on Crisp but Crisp has the better work rate and desire to at least try and pressure Lachie Jones (Callum Brown does not influence the contest). IQ is in a one on one with Gray, Marshall is against Roughie. SPP has been by himself this whole time and is about 20m away by himself and charging to the contest (Noble is trailing him, Wilson was running/jogging back)). IQ does a great job to punch towards the boundary but SPP is there by himself. IQ is going to the boundary line to win the ball while Gray is anticipating that SPP will win the ball so is peeling off and ready to receive the handball. SPP handballs over the top to Gray who has the time to settle and snap the banana goal. GOAL PORT.

Similar to last week - other teams players have a better work rate that us (Crisp is excused as worked his arse off). On this occasion it was SPP.

End of Quarter

Third Quarter

Grundy v Ladhams, T Brown v Wines, Adams v Boak and Crisp v Drew.
Crisp attends every centre bounce that quarter.

Observations -

*Mihocek has taken a mark on the wing. Grundy is about 65 from our goal and running back with his opponent (Ollie Wines - so a good mismatch) following him towards the 50m. Darcy Byrne Jones has identified the danger and is running towards Grundy as well. His opponent was Callum Brown who has stopped running and is in the corridor asking for Mihocek to centre the ball. Noble is the 20m short option further along the wing. Mihocek decides to use Noble (probably should have gone to Grundy). Noble has taken a mark on the boundary side wing. Grundy has worked hard to get back and present at the 50m line. Grundy has a probable two on one with the spare being Darcy Byrne Jones. Noble decides to kick 20m backwards to Adams who is dead set on the middle of wing (about 30m in from boundary). Adams then hits up Sidey on the boundary about 60m from goal. Grundy is still on Wines but is now dragging Wines to the goal square. Callum Brown is still no where near Darcy Byrne Jones. Mihocek and WHE are both boundary side about 40m from goal and Darcy Byrne Jones is trying to cover both. Umpire calls play on and Steele manages to hit Darcy Byrne Jones who gets a free kick for high contact. Terrible passage of play.

*Callum Brown is still on Darcy Byrne Jones. From a stoppage at our forward 45m, we work the ball backwards and end up back near the centre after a handball from Noble to Wilson. Wilson has Tyler Brown about 50m from goal that he could hit up with a 30m pass. Wilson elects to use the deeper options (which is fine) and the ball is headed to 35m from our goal. As the ball is headed towards that spot you can see Darcy Byrne Jones and Callum Brown maybe 5 metres apart. Port have a spare in Boark maybe 10m from where the ball is likely to drop. Callum Brown turns around and allows Darcy Byrne Jones to take an easy uncontested mark. IMO Brown had to do better and at least bring the ball to ground and at worst create a stoppage.

*This is a good example of why our stoppage work is often poor. Ball is on the wing for a boundary throw in. Grundy in ruck against Ladhams. Ladhams is on the side of the stoppage where Collingwood is kicking to. Daicos is on Farrell, Tyler Brown is on Wines and Drew is the spare and no doubt ready to apply a block for Wines (all on that side of stoppage). On the Grundy side of the stoppage, once again Burton has eyes off the ball and is turned facing Pendles. Boak is on Crisp and Poulter is spare out the back about 3m behind Pendles. So basically Port have a block to keep out our best player and have another block ready to help their best player. Wilson is a spare player about 10m away (Ports goal side) and about 70m from Ports goal Georgiades is with Moore. Gray is with IQ at the 50m line and Roughie is with Dixon in the corridor about 40m from Ports goal. Farrell gives a little push to Daicos and runs into the stoppage (Port seem happy to just keep Grundy out and to let the ball come to ground as they are better set up to win the loose ball). The ball is fumbled by Ladhams, Crisp goes to Ladhams to apply pressure but that leaves Boak free. Ladhams eventually ends handballs to Boak who handballs to Farrell who has kept on running but the handball is too far in front of Farrell. Pendles manages to make up some ground on Farrell. Daicos is caught at the back of the stoppage with Tyler Brown and that is where Crisp also is. Farrell picks up the ball and is about to be put under pressure by Pendles but Georgiades (Moores had backed off Georgiades) applies a block and pushes Pendles and that allows Farrell kicks long to Dixon who marks 20m out. Dixon has found space and the kick was cleverly put to Dixons open side and he marks against Roughie. Roughie was too slow to react (ball watching right at the end and gave Dixon a fraction too much space) to the danger. Port also had Sam Powell Pepper charging towards Dixon in case Dixon dropped the mark. Dixon goal. GOAL PORT

*Burton has a mark on the boundary about 70m from Ports goal. In the lead up play IQ was on Motlop. At this stage Thomas is 45m from Ports goal and pointing for someone else to get Bonner. As the ball is kicked bu Burton to the hot spot (20m corridor) Powell Pepper has engaged Moore to prevent him from getting to the contest. Dixon is with Roughie about to go for the mark with Motlop free (IQ switched to Gray) at the front of Dixon about 5m away. Maynard is tracking back to Motlop but is maybe 10m away. Motlop engages Roughie to allow Dixon to fly for the mark unattended. Marshall is now in picture and 10m behind the pack and is free. WHE is running away from the goal square towards Bonner who is free maybe 40m from goal. Thomas is about 45m from goal by himself with hands on hips and has not bothered to move. Sam Powell Pepper eventually allows Moore to try and get to the contest as Powell Pepper is now looking to be a crumber at the contest. Moore does not make the contest to influence it (arrives a fraction late) and the ball is fumbled by Dixon. Crisp picks up the ball (Moore is now ball watching) - As Crisp is tackled by Sam Powell Pepper the ball spills (Maynard is now accountable for Marshall). Dixon picks up the ball and IQ/Daicos try to tackle him. As Dixon tries to break free Maynard decides he will have a good at tackling Dixon and he succeeds but Dixon is still able to get the ball away to Marshall who is now free. Mayne tries to smother but Marshall snaps a good goal.

A few things i cannot work out. When the goal is kicked Grundy is with Ladhams not far from the contest but had no influence. I really don't understand what WHE and Thomas (Thomas was not involved in build up play and should not have been tired) were doing. How did we allow Motlop to go into marking contest unattended and apply a bit of a block.

*The famous Sidebottom sideways when he had McCreery charging towards goal. Sidebottom 100% looked in the direction of our goals first and then looked sideways (whether that glance was enough to spot McCreery who knows). However given the aim is to kick goals it might have been worth looking that direction for a fraction longer.

End of Quarter

Fourth Quarter

Grundy v Ladhams, Crisp v Boak, Tyler Brown v Wines, Adams v Powell Pepper Motlop on Noble, Rozee on IQ, Wilson v Farrell, Gray v Maynard, Moore v Marshall and Roughie v Dixon.

Observations -

*We are really our own worst enemy. Grundy receives a free kick from a boundary throw in 30m from Ports goal on the Olympic stand side. Grundys first instinct is to concede ground and kick backwards to IQ in the opposite back pocket. There are three different viable options on that side of the ground where the Collingwood player is boundary side of their opponent. IQ does not like any of those three options so he looks inboard where he has Grundy 20m from goal by himself and Roughie at top of the goal square. IQ elects to kick to Roughie who marks. Adams, Pendles and Moore are all in the corridor and telling Roughie to kick to the boundary. Roughie decides to play on and kick to the boundary but allows Dixon to smother and ball falls short of Maynard and lands with with Houston who snaps the goal. GOAL PORT

Sorry, but that absolute garbage from Grundy. His kick should have been 40-50m down the boundary line. IQ was also poor as he took had viable options down the line. Darcy comments that Dixon has not done much today. However, imo Dixon helped change the flow of the game when he went into the ruck against Grundy. Dixon also helped create a goal in the third quarter (Marshall goal).

*Not really sure you can have a small half forward flanker / pressure forward with such poor goal kicking skills. Callum Brown misses a relatively simple set shot.

*Our kicks inside 50m are so predictable - Port have players spare (Darcy Byrne Jones, Boak) who simply pick off the kick to 30m corridor from our goal.

*Crisp intercepts a Port Adelaide kick, on our side of the centre. Daicos appears to be on Farrell. Farrell leaves Daicos to run back into the defence to help out. That is when Darcy Byrne Jones marks the ball in the "hole" (30m from goal). Port switch the ball to the boundary where Amon marks about 60m from our goal. We block up the boundary side well but we have forgotten about Farrell who is in the corridor about 70m from our goal all by himself. Daicos and Callum Brown are trying to cover the short option in Wines but the kick goes over their heads and they turn around but its too late Farrell is 20m away all by himself. A few players don't appear to really know who they should be accountable for.

*McKenzie intercept marks 40m from our goal in the corridor). Marshall is sprinting from Olympic win to middle of the ground and is 20m ahead of Tom Wilson. Moore is sprinting to cover the AFL members boundary side which is where the kick is headed to Georgiades. GIorgiades kicks down the line to Marshall who plays on and kicks to Gray who beats IQ. GOAL PORT Wilson started the quarter on Farrell (who is a dangerous player) and now found himself on Marshall. Neither are great match ups for us.

*Time to give away a goal. Powell Peppr kicks a point. Darcy Moore has the kick out. Darcy spots on De Goey at the 50m line in the corridor and nails him perfectly. De Goey has Grundy running past for the handball or if he turns around and faces our goals will see McCreery running in the centre of the ground towards our goal with a 20m break on Jonas. De Goey looks all around and then decides to switch to the Olympic wing with a 50m sideways kick to Wilson who is free. Daicos is also there with Hartlett. Wilson gathers the ball and is facing Ports goal so handballs back to Daicos then its a handball back to Mayne and we are back at defensive 50m. Mayne goes diagonal backwards to Moor in the corridor about 40m from Ports goal. So now we have conceded 10m since De Goey marked. Moore then kicks to AFL members side to Noble who is about 70m from Ports goals. At that stage Mayne appears to be responsble for Powell Pepper (Mayne is at defensive 50m and Powell pepper about 60m from Ports goal) Dixon is about 20m from Noble as is Bonner. Noble has Sidey about 10m away near the boundary. So noble was not under any immediate pressure. Noble fumbles the mark, gathers the ball steadies and looks down the boundary line, Dixon is now bearing down on him and Noble now elects to kick diagonally backwards to Moore who is about 35m from Ports goal. Georgiades is 20m away from Roughie but the kick from Noble is so poor that Georgiades intercepts but spills an easy mark but is able to recover, handballs to Motlop at 50m when then spots Powell Pepper who provides a lead 35m from Portal goal. Powell Pepper goal. Mayne was covering the hot spot 30m from goal. Daicos did not track back with Powell Pepper it seems.

Just a terrible passage of play after such a good kick in by Moore.

*7 points down. Emergency button is pressed. All systems go. Jordan De Goey enters the centre bounce for the first time in the match and is onto Wines. De Goey attended the last four centre bounces of the match.

*Motlop kicks a scrubber out of bounds in the Port forward pocket. Grundy was previously up in our forward line so is running back to Ports forward line. At the time the umpire is about to throw the ball back in Dixon has nominated for the ruck and is 30m from Ports goal, Grundy nominates but is 10m -15m behind Dixon. Roughie and Moore are close by and could/should have nominated to take the ruck. De Goey is with Wines at the stoppage. Drew is unmarked and ready to provide a block. The throw in is very shallow so that eliminates Grundy from being effective and even contesting. (Moore has his back to play and is walking away). Dixon can catch the throw in, have time to release the handball to Wines who snaps the goal. WHE, Roughie also did not block off the open space at stoppage. (The commentators Jobe Watson comments that Grundy is a fair way behind but i don't believe realises that Grundy was tracking back from the other end of the ground!).

*Poulter nails his first goal in AFL. Very impressive given the pressure of the game.

*Even with 30 seconds left in the game, we allow Wines (who has killed us from stoppages) to eventually clear the ball. De Goey got suck into the contest after falling over Grundy and let Wines find space.

*Teams know that Pendles is still the man. Last week it was Hewett who played a shut down role. This week at a lot of the stoppages, Burtons role was simply to block Pendles from influencing the stoppage.

*Apart from our own mistakes, Port set up and won some important around the ground stoppages. This is not the first time that teams have "run" stoppages for certain players ie Suns (Rankine) and we are oblivious. I do not really see us "running" stoppages for any of our mids or forwards. Maybe ours are so subtle that i don't see it.

You're a very charitable observer

X 2 - Great summary JLC and it highlights our indecision and lack of aggressive play.
It seems that every week this became more apparent even on this occasion when we were up to our eyeballs. The comments re stoppages are invaluable in as much as it would seem that some work in these areas would see marked improvement.
My question is was it a drain in confidence? a lack of work effort? (which would suggest that morale was shot)or simply players not being up to standard?

Good points CP, probably a combination of all 3 would be my best guess
