Davis to depart den to Crows

Brisbane Lions AFLW Assistant coach, Ryan Davis has informed the club he will take on a new role as senior coach with the Adelaide Crows AFLW program in 2026.

Ryan, has been at the Lions for two seasons, looking after the midfield group in back-to-back grand final appearances.

AFLW pioneer Bree Brock steps down from Lions

Brisbane Lions foundation head of Women’s Football, Breeanna Brock has informed the club she will step down from her role with the Lions and relocate to South Australia to be closer to her family.

Brock, a pioneer of women’s football in Queensland, who has held her role since inception of the AFLW competition in 2017, will move to Adelaide to join her family, where husband, Murray Davis is currently the Director of Coaching at the Adelaide Crows.

Brock has been instrumental in setting up the Lions AFLW program, initially helping to grow female football through her role at AFL Queensland as the female participation co-ordinator, before moving to the Club in 2016 when the Lions were granted one of the first eight AFLW licences.

The exception to the rule is Brisbane, where it is understood the Lions employ a self-described "communist" mentality, with all players in tier three, which is allowed as long as total player payments fit under that year's cap.

Thought this was interesting.

AFLW Draft prospects to watch: Tall forwards abound in Class of 2026 Sarah Black looks at the leading prospects to be selected early at this year's draft
Mia Geere (Wilston Grange/Brisbane Academy, mid/forward)
Brisbane was happy to trade away last year's first rounders if needed, knowing it'll need picks aplenty to match incoming bids on this year's academy crop. Geere has pace and power from the contest to burn, and has also shown her wares on the wing and at half-back. Knows how to hit the scoreboard.
Harlee McIlwain (Morningside/Brisbane Academy, key forward)
Brisbane has one year without the departed Taylor Smith till McIlwain comes through the ranks. Not quite as tall at 176cm, but arguably more versatile than the ex-Lions spearhead, given she is just as capable at ground level as she is overhead.

Watched the Lions girls v Suns game from a couple of weeks ago.

Molly Ferguson is the most natural footballer in the team, has some Belle Dawes-like traits. Size is her only issue but it doesn’t stop Belle. Molly can play inside but also instinctively gets outside the contest well. Very busy player and works hard. Seems like a natural leader as well. She looks too natural a player to be overlooked.

Amelia Murray is our best pure mid. More inside than Molly and a little more solid. Definitely has at least some draft worthy qualities.

Aiyana Pritchard, something of a unique player and still quite raw but tall, fast and with development could make a good winger or half forward. I could see her being a late draft pick.

Mia Geere looks like a natural defender with ability to rebound. Very solid and tough. She would probably be a chance to get drafted because players like her aren’t super common.

Indiana Sheffler, might be a late developer but looks a possible tall forward prospect. Seems quite mobile.

Harlee McIlwain was very quiet.

Looks like RookieMe considers Ferguson, Geere, McIlwain and Pritchard all to be in the best 26 players in this draft crop. So we can probably expect a few of them to be drafted in the first round.

Not sure if you guys saw this report but I noticed Clark Keating's daughter Claudia will represent the Lions academy at the U16 National Championships over the next fortnight. Potentially another F/D pick coming through for you guys.

I was wondering why we were advertising for a new academy female program head. Good for Zielke though, has the potential to become a head coach at some point.

Given how GWS has performed under Cam, maybe sooner than later.

How good! Fascinating to learn it will be Aussie rules rather than international rules.

Regardless of the format I freakin love international football and I'd choose either 101 times out of 100 over state of origin.
Pretty sure there's enough Irish women playing in the AFLW to already make up a team.

This was the hypothetical Irish team Fox had last year

They do have some really good players but on paper they would get smashed.

100% guaranteed though that the Irish girls would be insanely ferocious and could well beat us on that alone.

Would be spectacular and I could see the game resulting in multiple players missing multiple weeks in suspensions.
