Wasn't sure what we would get with him and being a trade for pick 99 but the kid is impressive. Like stated before running power is extreme, people bagging his kicking kid is in his 2nd game has been running harder than 90% of players on the field and bleeds yellow and black nerves and tiredness can explain that when he gets comfortable at the level think we have a good Lil winger on our hands. Good build and isn't timid attacks the contest with vigour.
Keep it up 🐀

Liked his game. He isn't flashy, he isn't going to win games off his own boot but he will be a great soldier.
His kicking leaves a bit to be desired but thats all good. Happy to take the good with the bad.

Played well for a 20 year old playing his 2nd game
26 touches 15 kicks / 11 HB 4 marks and 3 tackles going at 69%
spent 76% in the defensive half and had 6 contested possessions
80% TOG and 500mtrs gained.

As most have mentioned needs to clean up the kicking a bit but only 2nd game so should be much better with 50 games

Glue his magnet to the wing position. In his 2nd game he's outperformed our other wingers we've used for years. Kids a born runner. Can focus on tidying up his disposal. Barring injuries we might’ve landed a 200 game solid role player for pick 99? Adios Ralphsmith.
Yep like the boy , one game and his output is = a months worth from hrs . Rock solid citizen that’ll be an upgrade on macca in this new generation tiger outfit

I see Ed Langdon in Retschko. Will never be a star or tear you up by foot but runs all day, finds plenty of the footy and does the team things.

Hope I eventually say the same about Retschko, but I would have a player like Langdon any day of the week in black and yellow. Old fashioned wing who just keeps on keeping on ... a bit like Berger Paints.

Looking at our list atm, there isn’t any better options than Retschko, nobody else has a tank compatible. We’ve got more talented kids, but they are either injured or not ready or capable of covering the ground.
I reckon the defensive wing is his to lose. It’s a thankless role, not many are suited to. Maybe Grlj eventually becomes the other winger, who we utilise more to attack.

Loved his game on Friday night. Just kept running and running. Not overly quick but not slow either. People criticise his kicking, but I thought he was neat. He will never be a Lalor with his kicking, but he is already ahead of Ralphsmith in that regard, and he is also putting his body into uncomfortable positions that many others don't.

Solid mark overhead too

Yep, completely agree.

Now watch him get dropped as soon as Hugo is available again.

I like this kid, looks like a pure winger and has some run. Gave him a vote this week. Impressed me.

Glad you posted this. He makes some errors but has just turned 20 and played all of 4 games at AFL level, with players who he is not used to playing with. So no shame there as long as he learns how to reduce the errors over time.

A couple of things that caught my eye on the weekend. He seems to keep his feet well in tackles, and is strong enough to make some good tackles as well. 11 tackles in 4 games is more than decent for a winger.

The other thing I loved, if he fluffed a kick or made a poor decision, he just got on with it and chased the next ball and attacked it and disposed with confidence. From a 2028-29 onwards perspective, I am starting to get some hopes for this kid. That running ability too, you can't buy that.

Im thrilled with his efforts. When you hear his backstory it all adds up. Kid grew up a rabid fan and is living out his dream. Considering some of the hacks we've carried as best 23 locks who never get dropped no matter how p1sspoor their outputs are week in week out, I hope the kid retains his spot when the inevitable quiet to stinker games occur.

It's easy to love the superstars who cost a lot at trade or as a low draft pick. Even better the discarded or overlooked gems who just need opportunities to shine. Your Kane Lambert, Leon Cameron, Barry Rowlings types who flourish in a new environment. So many drafts we've passed on picks in the latter part of the draft. To snaffle Retschko for pick 99 is looking like a master-stroke. Also speaks volumes of the Cats eyes for talent and depth (ironic that they discarded Retshko, most likely as they had plenty of depth on wing).

Sick of seeing them always landing bargains from Ireland, Rookie Draft, Steeplechasers, Tom Stewart from pub leagues, discards from other clubs like Isaac Smith, Bailey for cheap as chips. Their list managers really are to be admired.

Cats probably unloaded Retschko quick smart when they realised how well connected his was at another club or even two clubs, but mainly Richmond, with his dad also employed gainfully by the Hawks. It would be immensely risky for them to try to carry on their labrynthine cheating activities with such a person at close quarters for many years.

So if people think the Cats delisting him was strange from a football perspective, this will likely be why it was done. And the better Retschko turns out as a player, the more certain it is that this is what caused the Cats to jettison him. I am not sure when was the last time Cats delisted a player early and he went on to be a really good player. It doesn't really happen, they often given total spuds a full 6 years before unloading them. This guy is probably not a spud and he got one year.
