VFL watchers, how was Monahan's first season at VFL level?

Played 18 games and averaged just under 7 touches a game, kicked 5 goals over the year as well.

What position was he playing?

Now listed at 194cm on the club website.

Was a pretty average first season, playing as a sort of lead up half forward for most of the year - last month he got some games down back and looked a little more settled, although still a fair way off vfl level

It's a hard read sometimes with the Irish lads. We've had a few in the past like Zachy and Byrne who basically hit the ground running, but the game is different to those days.

By memory, Conor Nash was nearly delisted by Hawthorn a few years back, but recetly signed a 5 year extension - so shows that some of the Irish boys can be a slow burn with high upside.

Monahan could be one of those types. Very athletic and strongly built, but you could see that he'd never played the game of AFL until this year. However, he seemed to build and read the game better as the season went on, but still a long way off the mark - even compared to non AFL listed state league players.

Another pre season and year of development will give us a better idea where he sits, although I'm not sure what position he's best suited to. We've got Duffy coming on board next year, who looks like he could slot straight into the back 6 with his size and running capabilities when you look at his highlights reel. Monahan may end up as a high forward, but not sure.

Monahan is very strongly built already, and apparently has a solid endurance base, so I think he just needs to focus on repeat sprints and skill & tactics work... no point turning himself into a man mountain that won't have any impact in a football game.
