What does everyone think of the crowd yesterday?

It was a beautiful day weather wise, an extra long weekend plus it was our first game of the season against one of the premiership contenders. There was also the expectations of how we would go after all the hype of the changes during the off season.

We couldn't even crack 40,000!!!

Here are some crowd figures for the first home game of the season over the last few years,

2005 Rnd 1 v West Coast 39,055
2004 Rnd 2 v Brisbane 41,095
2003 Rnd 1 v Fremantle 45,436
2002 Rnd 2 v Geelong 44,386

I don't know about everyone else but I've prepared myself for a very hard season.

It was a lovely day, I personally wouldn't have been anywhere else. However, it is Easter and people do go away. All in all I don't think it was a bad crowd given the long weekend.

Yeah have to agree not a bad crowd ;)

It will be a lean year crowd wise, if we lose to Collingwood and Port beat Brisbane I would expect a very low showdown crowd low 40,000s. Basically between the fair weather supporters and the people that are cheesed off at the club and dont see a future under neil craig it will mean the crowds will be down most of the year.

You see this is what I don't get. Why would you buy a ticket and then not go? Some people must have money growing on trees or something. I go no matter what and this year as it happens I miss 1 home game because I am going overseas and that annoys me!

Yesterday given the fact it was Easter Sunday is a difficult one to asess crowd wise, My family isn't speaking to me as i selfishly put my love of the crows before spending it with my family (and after their reaction to it i am so glad i chose my boys even if we did lose heartbreakingly).

I think this season will be a litmus test and we will be able to see who are fair weather supporters, and those who are there because we have red, blue and gold blood running through our veins. Rain or shine, win or lose.

I couldn't care less (well i could) if we lose every game by 100+ points, my team needs me more at low points thoughout the season, it's so very easy to jump on the bandwagon when you are winning. I am not a Craig supporter at all didn't want him appointed, still don't want him there but that is not a valid reason to drop off support for a team which is my passion.

On a side issue... WTF was with the ability to hear a pin drop at various stages yesterday... is it really that hard to support throught a 2 hour game? Not just when a goal is scored and the perenial pathetic AD-EL-AIDE chant goes up... but from commencement til the final siren. We should all be ashamed of ourselves, AAMI should be feared with the crowds imput helping us to keep a lead and kill of a side not hindering through silence. God the Eagles supporters out chanted us, constantly.

Rant over.

:o

I'm one of those offenders, I don't chant AD-EL-AIDE and I tend to go a bit quiet when

1 - the ball is on the other side of the ground
and 2 - when there are a few stoppages in a row

But I do make myself heard, on a few occasions there were people taking my lead like when Mark Stevens was trying to take on 3 WCE players by himself southern left pocket. I yelled out "C'mon whos helping him?", then all I heard for the next 20 seconds was "help him", "why aren't they helping him?" from all the corners around me. It was happening all day.

Let's not get too dramatic about the crowd.

When was the last time that the 1st game of the season co-incided with Easter?

People DO go away for Easter.

Considering Easter the crowd was pretty good.

What was disappointing was the lack of crowd input in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs?

But haven seen one game live this weekend where flooding dominated the game and low scoring occurred I can understand the public being "bored".
If we're going to play soccer we're going to lose fans!

I stand to be corrected but I think it was 1997 - Adelaide vs Brisbane 36,632 (before the new stand)

In 2002 - frist round also coincided with Easter however we played away at Telstra Dome against the Doggies and that only drew about 18,000.

You can add about 8,000 for the new stand, that makes it about 44,000, there are always no shows to take into account. Crowd v Capacity, the difference was about 18,000 yesterday. The difference for the above game is only about 10,000.

1. It was an away game (so why would we be worried about a WB crowd)
2. It was against the WB, not exactly the biggest supporter base.

But I think that besides easter, people don't want to waste their money on a team that is going to play like they did yesterday.

Let's compare apples with apples.

The new stand increased the capacity of Footy Park from 47,000 to 54,000 - an increase of 7,000.

The 1997 crowd of 36,632 was 10,300 odd below the full house capacity of 47,000.

The introduction of the bucket seats has reduced the capacity of the ground from 54,000 to about 52,500 off memory.

So the crowd on Sunday was about 13,500 below the full house capacity.

That makes the difference to full house capacity an increase of around 3,200 not 8000 as you've stated.

It also ignores the basic fact that the crowd in 2005 was 7%greater than the last comparable Easter crowd, not less.

Let's not go down the Michaelangelo Rucci path about our prospects just yet.

Was very sad that we have a huge crowd but no influence, I like the Freo vs Port game on Saturday night when most of the crowd was chanting Freooooo Freoooooo bloody sounded good ;) But hey when the CS can only manage to use 3 out of 9 floggers there isnt much inspiration is there, the CSG in Melbourne will show you how it's done next Sunday and we only have about 25 people.

My guesses were a bit off macca. But it was a poor crowd, we should of had at least 43,000. In 2003 I went to 8 games plus one interstater which is a mighty effort when your not a season ticket holder, not one of those matches was under 40,000 people. There was over 51,000 for one of the showdowns and we even got 46,945 v Sydney. In terrible conditions against Essendon (Carey v Goalpost) and the Kangaroos we managed 41,758 and 42,259 respectively.

My point is that the crowds aren't down just because of the Easter weekend.

Considering it was easter the crows was OK-ish.

I cannot understand people that buy season tickets and don't go to majority of the games.

Rain, hail or shine, I will be there. ONly dramatic circumstances can keep me away. When the going gets tough people show their true colors and if the crowds are down this year because we aren't playing well or NC is the coach them those people don't deserve to be members / season ticket holders of the club. The club needs us now more than ever but unfortunately you will always have bandwagoners that are the first ones to jump ship when it gets a bit tough and are the first ones to jump on the bandwagon when the things are going well. If you don't love the club, don't be a member.

In addition to this comment, what I don't get is how people can pay up to $270 for a season ticket, and from the opening bounce all they do is whinge and complain and bag the team, and creating such a negative environment around them.

There's a group of losers behind us, and this is exactly what they do. Mind you, I just think they just have a negative attitude as at half time they were complaining about their jobs.

Still, if you're going to have an attitude like that, then why bother paying good money to go?

On the crowd number, I thought it was a great number, considering we're most likely going to finish 15th at best this year, it was Easter, and we were playing West Coast.

I've only been to one game away from Adelaide - the day 'Roo cleaned up the Blues at Optus Oval in the wet - about 3-4 years ago now. It was wierd supporting the team in the opposite environment to Footy Park. How do poeple find the supporting in the away games - is it different to when we are at home? Do you barrack difrently - are our supporters in general different then?

I'm far more vocal at away games because we're in the minority and you've got an army of opposition fans to out-barrack and goad.

At Footy Park it's all a bit sterile because you've rarely got anyone to out-roar and stick it to during the game.

so true

why? Because we have some ppl here that think booing stenglein is offensive, which thankfully not all the members thought quite the same way.

adelaide would have the most pi$s weak crowd, noise wise in the AFL. Badly in need of some sort of supporters group that can stir some shi te up.

I found this too, I've only been to one interstater which was against Collingwood at the TD in 2003. We were parked right next to C'wood cheer squad, and I have never yelled so loud in my life. Didn't help much, we lost by 38 pts.

I don't beleive the crowd figures were accurate.

My ticket did not scan through propperly & neither did 1/2 a dozen in front of me. The red coat on the scanner said they had had a lot of problems with the tickets.

The ground seened pretty full to me.

I barrack the whole game but around me you can hear a pin drop (or me spitting the dummy). The Ade-el-aide chant has to go. Get rid of it.
Just use our emblem FFS.
I thought the crowd was a little down before I went in but when the game started I am sure it would have been over the 40k.
