Anyone here play games in 3D?

I know Metro is capable of it (well, a lot of games are) and was just wondering how the visuals actually stack up. Is it in any way comparable to 3D movies?

I haven't compared 3D-filmed content to 2D->3D content either, I've just seen Avatar played on Blu-Ray.

Any input would be great :thumbsu:

I do. When a game is made with 3D in mind (which is quite a lot of PC releases these days), it looks amazing. The 3D effect adjustable in both depth and convergence (pop out effect), which leads to a much, much stronger 3D effect then going to watch a movie where the 3D is adjusted to low level in order not to give people headaches (it takes your eyes a little while to adjust being able to handle full depth whilst playing games).

I find the effect to be best when looking down a tunnel. It really gives the impression that the monitor is more like a window in real life than a display and in games like Mafia 2 and Metro, it adds so much to the atmosphere of the game that I find myself playing them occasionally just because its so immersive.

I have a 3DS on top of having seen a bunch of 3d movies both at the cinema and on my PC, but those two experiences, while decent enough feel very gimicky. Playing games on a decent size monitor however is a very impressive experience (I'd love to buy a big screen 3D tv one day...) and can add a lot to the game. You need a pretty decent video card, and although AMD have a 3D solution, its very new and only one game I can think of supports it natively, so you'll want an nvidia card and a 3D vision kit (3d vision 2 is almost out which replaces the old glasses with tint free ones).

kerrby i hate you

Ah cheers man.

I've just got the parts for my new rig on the way and have the 570s in SLI. I figure that should get 50+fps in 3d if I were to go down that route, meaning it should definitely be playable yeah?

The only question I've been unable to answer (well, find on the internet :() is whether I need the nvidia 3d vision kit if I have a 3d monitor?

I was thinking of getting this one here:

http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/ls27a950dsxy-samsung-s27a950-silver-p-53029.html?sort=3d

I know it comes with glasses and supports 3d. I've also read that games like Arkham City/BF3 (although not at the moment as far as I know) and Metro will have 3D (all Metro reviews I've read echoed your comments).

So, would I need to fork out for the monitor and the Nvidia kit is my question.

But I have heard the 120hz monitors make normal gaming better anyway, so if not I'd be happy to spend a bit more on the monitor.

Edit: Ok I've found they're not compatible forms of 3D gaming. So for 3d with the nvidia setup I need a compatible monitor. Hmm.

Edit2: Which leaves me with something like this:

Acer HN274H 27"

Still 27" and supports nvidia 3d gaming.

So as far as I'm aware, you can go down 2 paths:

1) Nvidia 3d + Compatible 3D Monitor
2) Random 3D monitor

Yeah you need the kit and the 3D monitor. The kit contains the glasses (which are expensive because they are LCD shutter glasses, unlike the type you find in the cinema) as well as the remote box that the glasses use.

Those 570's will be fine, btw for pretty much every game out there. You won't be able to run metro completely maxed out in 3D because that game is a freak, but it will still run well and look amazing.

As for 120hz monitors being better for gaming in 2D, I generally find myself very rarely turning V-sync on as the monitor very rarely tears for some reason. Other than that I haven't really noticed much difference between a 60hz and 120hz screen.

Hmm ok thanks again mate.

The monitor I listed was actually on the nvidia website, listed as:

Acer HN274H
- LCD Monitor
- 27 '' - 1920x1080
- Includes 3D Vision Wireless Glasses, HDMI 1.4 3D Vision Support, Built-in Emitter, 3D Vision Surround-Ready

So it seems to me as though that actually comes packaged with the glasses and a built-in emitted, so I wouldn't need the package. I would've thought otherwise, but being on the nvidia website, I'm inclined to believe that. Will have to look into it.

And yeah, I imagine I'll play most games maxed for a year or a bit longer if I'm lucky, but a small drop to play in 3D will probably change the whole experience again.

The only other thing I want to look into is how the quality on the 3D is depending on where the person is sitting. It'd be cool to have a few mates (or most likely 1, I'm not buying that many glasses haha) around and one can watch the other game. Hopefully it's decent.

I'm not too sure about viewing angles as I sit at my desk when playing (though I sometimes lean back in my chair with my feet up with a controller, its not enough to effect the image on a 22" monitor, for what its worth).

Another thing is you can usually keep resolution a bit lower and turn off AA as 3D keeps the image really sharp regardless (again I'm not sure why), so there really isn't a game out there where you wouldn't get a great 3d experience with those cards.

Playing unchartered 3 in 3d, and it is absolutely bloody unreal.
