I was in one today, they seem much safer then normal cars. If anybody here drives one, would you ever go back to a normal car, and also what do they have that cars dont.

People who own a 4 wheel drive and live in the city with less than 2 kids are complete assholes who need to die :thumbsu:
Agreed total tossers.
Only need them if you have a big family or if you actually intend on using them properly.

I'm guessing you were headed to the slopes in a rangerover as well deeman

No not the slopes, to a funeral. I wanna drive one when im older, they seem much safer and you can see the road much better.

I drive one, but will nearly always drive the sedan in the city. They are great for roadtrips, but crap for everything else.

The best 4WD trip I've done was from Perth to Alice Springs and back along the Gunbarrell Highway. Took a couple of weeks, but was great fun.

EDIT: And no, I don't think they are safer at all.

Safety? Good enough, a lot of 'safety' comes from the driver's brain, no matter what they drive. I've got a fourby, but I'm selling it because I don't do enough 4wding anymore. Buying one for only city running is pointless, but then again, who'd be seen dead in one of those 'people mover' vans?

was it Top Gear or Fifth Gear who crashed an MPV and a 4WD, interesting "safety" result

Not sure, my point about people movers is that you'd be embarrassed to be seen in one.;) There are some 4wds out there that aren't safe, but then again there's a fair share of normal cars that are in the same boat.

Used to have a Toyota Celiac but traded that in for a 2006 Ford Territory and would never go back to a sports car.

Not sure if it is a true 4WD but more like an SUV – but basically the same thing.

Pretend 4wd.;) Nice cars though, if I had a family and ventured onto dirt roads I'd get a Territory.........turbo.:D

Good topic.

My old man used to have a Ford Explorer, and that thing felt safe, but I felt no safer in that than I do in my 80's era Falcon, which is built like a tank.

But then, I'd feel safer in either the Explorer or the older Falcon than I would in smaller, newer cars (Hyundai's etc.)

It's all relative.

Owned stationwagons before the 4X became popular. We're in our 3rd and are now looking @ the Kruger. The extra room compared to a sedan is the winner for me.

So your car couldn't eat gluten products? ;)

I have owned sports cars and 4WD/SUVs. From experience it is best not to drive a 4WD like it is a Honda Integra!! :D

Thats probably the only problem with 4wheel drives, but the new models have cameras installed.

actually the RAA (or some other car association) did a test and found that the viewing distance behind a 4WD was about 7 metres and behind a commodore it was only a couple of feet closer.
I can't remember the exact distances but the point is that no matter what car you are in (except a mini), if a child runs behind your car you won't see them unless they are a few metres away.

$2-3 litre fuel prices in a few years to come should send most of these metal hulks to an early grave.

hardly, the last doubling of price has had minimal impact
