Hugo is no lock IMO. Banks was ahead of him 2024.

2 small defenders in 2024, 1 in 2025.

Carlton had one KPF. Smith will struggle for a game.
The beauty is there’s competition for most spots. Hugo is not a lock.
Different players, but Hugo ave more goals, more inside 50s, more disposals, more marks, more tackles, more 1%. Banks cleaner disposal. Overall, Hugo starting player in 18 games. Banks starting in 12, plus 3 as sub. Not sure this says Banks was ahead last year.

Banks was very good Thursday, not dominant but he was skilled, ran hard and was involved in defence and attack. I noticed him more behind the ball than as an attacking option. If he can just keep building we have a hard running tall, skilled player who can do the defensive work, and is dangerous in offence.

Don't know if he is B grade or maybe A grade. But I can see him becoming an A grader with his tools. Lot to do, but right now banks is on track to be a good AFL player over time.

Banks will be a better player than Hugo. Hugo has improved a lot and is worthy of a spot, but Banks has superiors skills and superior ball winning ability. I see Hugo as our modern day ‘Macca’ and Banks more of a Short / Houli type. Banks finished 2024 really well and is on his way to becoming a very good player IMO.

I agree with you 100%. Banks is not as fast as Hugo but doesn’t seem to turn it over as much and has better foot and hand skills.

He also went when it was his turn, the kid is a keeper.

I just dont think they are similar players at all. Hugo the super athlete playing footy and Banks the footballer.

Banks strengths from Rookie Central include athleticism. He did a 3.02 in preseason testing vs Hugo 2.97 at draft combine.

Hugo had an 86cm running jump and 6.12 2km at combine. Banks all I can find was 74cm standing vert in preseason.

So I’m not convinced the athletic difference is massive except running capacity for Hugo is absolutely elite.

I think the difference in athletic profile is quite profound when you stack them side by side. Not saying Banks is a spud, but Hugo's athletic profile is ELITE and you can see it in the way they play IMO.

He was good offensively but had some pathetic defensive efforts.
Think the improvement is still trending upwards overall

Nowhere near the finished product but happy with his progress this year

Banks > Short?

28 touches at 89%, 660m gained. I really liked the look of him as that attacking half back. Uses the ball beautifully.
That is bascially what Short did for a few years. if Short does not bring it when he is over his injury I think the MC have enough evidence now that Banks can replace Short.

Still not sure what his strengths are. He isn’t overly skilled and he’s not particularly fast, not Dan rioli level. I’d say he’s just average in both. He also had that horrible play where he took off through the corridor with no plan and no where to go, turning it over. He could develop into a solid hb, but I just don’t see his strengths. Worries me under pressure in our backline too

Lol. We've been screaming out for someone to show a bit of dare instead of bomb it to Lynch down the line and as soon as someone does they're criticised for it. At least he was trying to create something.

Weird nitpick. He's allowed to make a mistake.
