Jake Lloyd

Player Profile

Jake Lloyd is a ball magnet, an endurance machine, a clean user of the footy and a calming influence on the Sydney Swans’ half-back line. The former rookie-listed Swan averaged 27.22 disposals per match between 2016 and 2019 and won the club’s 2018 Bob Skilton Medal. Lloyd became the quickest Swan in history to reach 100 senior games when he ran out against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8, 2018. He was then recognised as one of the best players in the league when he was selected for Victoria in the State of Origin match for bushfire relief in February 2019. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 15; 2014 AFL Draft rookie elevation (Sydney).

I've been away for a while, but wanted to write-up why I thought this signing and his comments were interesting.

1- As a rookie he was passed on 2 consecutive drafts, those rookie players often feel they "owe" the team that takes a punt with their first contract but use management properly for their second- this was Lloyds second.
2- His statement that he wanted it done earlier but management and the swans took some time makes me think his manager did his job, shopped around abit for clubs that need a clean outside player (OTHER THAN US) to get market value, came back to the swans and they werent that close.
3- This is where I infer a fair bit, but it seems to me the club is very happy with Lloyd and especially with his role after loosing jetta. We dont have a ready replacement nor a similar like-for-like skill wise in the NEAFL, therefore for the swans to take this long with his contract makes me think we really are trying to save some $$$ for a play on another free agent (OR we are just very close to cap limit). (Although not related to this thread, Harley statement in relation to either McDonald/Hurley or Wood was "I dont think we can afford him" was extremely perplexing.

Anyway,

I really really like lloyd as a player who gets the most out of his skill level, and realises that hardball isnt his thing, therefore contributes the best way he can, by running more Km's than anyone on the swans list bar hiscox!! well done, and will be even more key in the next 2 years!

I don't understand some of the hate for Lloyd. He is a decent youngster with plenty of upside. I thought earlier in the year he was superb. He may of dropped off a little, but he is still playing his role and that's the most important thing!

He is a very honest player who has faults that are recognised by his coaches, but his efforts & attitude over 2016 make these faults insignificant.

Me too, always like seeing kids that have done it the hard way succeed.
and runs his arse off every game. Even with limited ability he slogs it out. Not a tough in and under but his gut running is just as tough for me

i've been a critic, but i think if he can aim up in a big game that could be the difference... its the bottom six that matters for a premiership... anyway, he's brave and i appreciate that.

Really?

I think his disposal is underrated
Depends who we play and the pressure
Against the dogs and Hawks he didn't see it
Hacked it forward under pressure

I like him and he bloody runs hard but he does go missing in the big games at times

I agree with this. He has struggled in big games but with every big game under his belt, he will become a more hardened player.
He is dedicated to the system & that I like.

He's exactly the type of player thugs like Hodge and Smitchell would target. He is a main ball distributor, and important to our structures. He needs some protection, or he will be smashed like Jetta and Hanners in 2014.

We need to recruit a thug!

Does anyone else think that Naismith has a bit of mongrel in him?

He only needs to use it 3 times on GF day.
Once for Hodge, once for Mitchell once for Burgoyne, Cyril & Gunston.
Nothing like killing 5 birds with 3 stones!

I just want to see a brutal game. I expect it from Parker, buddy, aliir. I think Kennedy could even go beast mode in a gf. With 2014 in the back of their minds.

When a premiership is at stake you need to do what it takes.

I would like a little more mongrel in the side. Jones would definitely bring it, but I'm concerned about his lack of discipline due to his age/inexperience. Don't think he'll be back for finals so it's probably a pointless discussion.

Jones. Nankervis, too, but he's a fringe player.

Reckon Heeney and Mills have a bit of campaigner in em, tbh.

Another game where he didn't set the world on fire with the quality of his disposal. Does all the hard work to get the outside ball, but he's still not making a lot happen with his kicks.
