In my opinion 5/4 is a kickass time signature. Funky as hell, catchy and whack a bit of 4/4 drums over the top of a 5/4 riff and you've got some serious musical goodness.

I dream of the day it overtakes 4/4 as the pop beat of choice and the kids are funking it up to the 1 to the 2 to the 3 to the 4 to the 5.

I've heard 17/11 is good too! ;)

P.S. - The theme for Saruman's orcs in The Fellowship of the Ring is in 5/4

Firstly, there is no such thing as 17/11 !!

5/4 is a great time signature to groove with. I urge you to listen to 'seven days' by sting with Vinnie on drums. He plays an accented groove over the bar line and makes the song have a unique sounding song pulse.

As for other odd time signatures; there are some Meshuggah songs in 27/16, dream theater 19/16 and Tool in compound 7/8 - 8/8 - 9/8 sections. Pretty cool.

Odd time sigs are fun ;)

Wicked choice bro. His hats and splash work in the verses of that tune in particular are just majestic.

He kinda goes with a similar, but far more straighter theme in 3/4 (?? i'm really bad with time sigs.. never had a music/drum lesson in my life :( ) with his ride work in "Saint Augustine in Hell" off the same album (Ten Summoner's Tales).

I'm really surprised you didnt also mention the verses/solo in Porcupine Tree's "The Sound of Muzak" which from my very limited understanding of time sigs is in 7 and features just about my favourite drum groove since Porcaro's shuffle in Rosanna, Carter's groove in DMB's "Pig" and Matty's Wooden Jesus intro from the Temple of the Dog album.

Matty is the king of making odd sigs groove and sit sweetly IMO. Playing them is one thing, but making them snake around and feel nice and slurpy is a gift.

I was gonna mention The Sound of Musak which it also of my favourite grooves to play. I thought I'd rambled enough though ;) And you're right, it is in 7. Just a sensational groove. And you're right with Porcaro's half time shuffle in Rosanna, it's sweet. Geez we have very similar tastes :thumbsu:
