So we're 5 games in and I for one am pleased by what I'm seeing. We attack as well as defend now, we run and share the ball and we're playing kids when we can to see what they can bring.
General observations (in no order of importance):
  • We've found a couple...Krueger and Lipinski are both handy and will contribute to our next run at finals. From limited observation Dean looks likely too.
  • Our kids (IQ, Ginnivan, McInnes, Henry, McRae, Poulter, N. Daicos, Harrison, Begg) all look pretty handy and offer different options
  • Our coaches look to have the boys embracing the game plan (to score 14 goals with THAT forward line last night...the system obviously works) AND its much more attractive to watch than the previous game plan
  • By way of injuries and suspensions we haven't had a settled team in any of our first 5 games and yet we've still won a couple! Plebs on BF bemoaning selections might just want to remember that our coach needs to have a look at a few players during his "honeymoon period" to see what they actually bring. I'm pretty sure we'll see a "Fly" brand team in his second and third years and to my mind THAT TEAM will be super exciting to watch.
  • We're sharing the midfield load now not just relying on Pendles, Adams and Sidey (a move that's been 3-4 years too late). I know it places stress on other players but its also opportunity and once McInnes, N. Daicos, McCrae, Poulter and Harrison push through then we'll actually be able to exit centre clearances at speed.
  • The coaches game plan is suiting some of our players better and they're playing with more confidence and second guessing themselves less (J. Daicos, Noble, Sidebottom, Adams)
  • The ruck situation continues to cause angst amongst BF boffins yet Grundy is still a top two/three ruckman and offers plenty around the ground. The problem has always been finding the right WINGMAN for Grundy. We've tried Witts, Lynch, Cox, Cameron and none have or had the ability to provide those 5-8 minutes of athletic ruckwork that we need each quarter when Grundy rests. All the best rucks have had ideal combinations and its still the same today (Gawn has Jackson). In watching the seconds play these past few weeks I've seen Aiden Begg play a similar role to what Grundy does yet with more athleticism. Could Begg be the missing piece?
  • Seeing Darcy Moore go forward and nonchalantly kick a couple of goals in the last quarter last night does beggar the question...should he be used as a swingman more often? Again....good to see our coaching staff taking chances. They've done it a lot in the first 5 games....
I've said enough....over to you lot!

Having attended our last 2 games at the gabba, there was massive improvement in attitude and attacking game style last night.
Clearly there are 2 or 3 players who are not good enough, but the new coach has them playing to the best of their ability and i love what he says in his press conferences.
Would prefer to see Darcy stay at FB/CHB and be an absolute champion in those positions.

I can only fault two things:
1. Our inability to swing momentum back in our favour when the opposition gets a run on
2. Our scoring efficiency per inside 50

Everything else has improved leaps and bounds, and we look like a competitive side that will be hard to beat most weeks. We just have a few holes in the list to fill, and we need a couple more years pumped into our youth, and we’ll be there abouts.

With a ten day rest and players coming back, we're in good shape to win on ANZAC Day and be 3-3, which would be a good return. However if we drop it and go 2-4 things look a lot different. Crucial game coming up.

Tracking very well.

We can see the gamestyle and effort.

With the forward line McCreery and Kreuger are two massive pieces. Contest and pressure.

If anything it is the experienced players that are letting us down. They need to get on board.

As long as we continue to see the kids develop (including in the VFL) then I will continue to be happy.

I want to see Macrae in particular start to demand a spot in the midfield before long.

Feels like we have to work so hard for our goals, a lot of those i50’s are bombed in kicks or a chain of handballs that overcook it.

Sorting out the key forward setup has held the club back for years and continues to do so.

Agree with this but also think that with our change of game plan we need one or two really good crumbers to take advantage of the chaos and groundballs caused by our quicker FWD entries. So a key forward YES, but two smart, quick little blokes would be ideal.

People need to remember that this game plan is based on Richmonds. Richmond had better tall players (Lynch and Riewoldt are both miles better than our talls). Their smalls were also more effective.

The bombed / chaos kicks serve a purpose at times. Bring the ball to ground and create a stoppage. We really need to improve in this area.

The over cooking of handballs i agree with - often overdo it and fail to even get a shot on goal.

Then there is the complete butchering of passes into an open forward line. That is purely down to poor execution and the wrong players having the ball.

Probably sitting where l thought we would, at 2 and 3. Surprised and looked very good for 3 quarters against the Cats and should've beaten the Eagles, so we could be sitting at 4 and 1.
I like that we have been competitive in all our games, and in winning positions in just about all of them.
N Daicos had been sensational, and should be the rising star this season. I like Krueger, and Lipinski, despite him having a quieter few weeks. McInnes looks good, Henry was good early, and will continue to get better. J Daicos is probably close to leading the Copeland, along with N Daicos. DeGoey looks to be becoming a consistent super star of the competition, and Quaynor has taken another step so far this season.
I would like to see a few more of our youth get into the side, like Poulter and Macrae, but their time will come this season.
Love the game style Fly and the coaches are trying to instill, and once we get the little tweaks to it sorted out, like scores against in transition from D50 by the opposition, it will be exciting for us going forward.
All in all, happy so far, but l would like us to get another win soon, and after our performance against Brisbane, should have real belief of a win on Anzac Day.

I feel like we’ve only seen our preferred forward line for a half of football and this is holding us back a bit at the moment.

Efficiency and composure inside 50 and we are probably 4-1.

ANZAC Day may give us the opportunity to see that mix with Checkers, McCreery and Ginnivan joining Reef and Kreuger. Still Elliott missing but I think the key for us is to see Kreuger and Checkers together, possibly with Cameron.

On the whole I’m liking what I’m seeing. There’s stuff that I’m not sure on, such as continuing games for Madgen and WHE, but interested to see how it plays out in coming weeks.

Said it in another thread but Thursday night with the Lions having Bailey, McCarthy and Cameron made me think we need a Bailey type. It’s not Ginnivan but it’s maybe Harrison from limited views.

I have no idea how Brisbane didn't flog us. Credit to the players and coaches for that one.

I have no idea how we lost to the Eagles.

We are an inconsistent team and really need to get in the first 3-4 picks this year, very worrying it's still our older players that are winning us games.

And losing us games.

I think there is a mindset issue, we played Eagles trying not to lose rather than trying to win, similar with Geelong once we got in front we played not to lose and once the momentum changed we got fooked.

i'm surprised how old the team has been, particularly against the lions. I was expecting more youth this year. Nick Daicos would be playing in even the contending sides. Reef is a genuine youngster. Kreugar and Lipinski and Cameron have been in the system for 4 years. This isnt a development side. Fagan commented on it. Foxfooty did too. I'm not sure what the exact strategy is but I'm thinking this is going to be a long long journey...

Pretty good summary. But come on. IQ and Josh Daicos are way above pretty handy.

"Pretty handy" seems about right to me at the present time. They're both obviously talented youngsters and both willing to learn. Another 50 games into both of them and they'll be "Really Handy" lol.

You have to remember that I'm old! So I've seen lots of "pretty handy" youngsters over the years.
Bob Rose was a beauty right from the start, Greening was UNBELIEVABLE and Daicos Snr was a complete player from day 1. To me, these young men still have a little bit to learn but I love watching them learning don't you?
