I mean live at the footy, not on telly (so I won't include Ayres monstering Wilson in the 1991 GF: I was there but I only saw it on the replay). These are the players and occasions I thought shook me and the people around me.
1. Tony Lockett angry on the lead. He had the physique, the temperament and the track record that added up to a towering menacing presence. Never really belted the Pies around physically (and Monky famously rattled his cage) but just a force of footballing destruction and kicked many a bag on us. Scary, but I could see the greatness of it.
2. Gary Ablett's blank face as he prepared to embarass really excellent defenders like Pert and Langford. No emotion, no sign he registered there were any other people between him and the ball. He was a frankly disturbing man.
3. Stan Magro. Not so much for any one incident (although he flattened a "who's who" full of star opponents) as the mad eyes. We were a tough club and had many tough teams, but not many tougher players. Which brings me to...
4. Darren Millane patrolling the wing. He took numbers, names, and revenge. Any number of games come to mind, but the 1990 semi vs Essendon when he was dropped off the ball and calmly got up and looked around for the perpetrator (who had wisely made himself scarce) was like a scene from a Guy Richie movie. Geez I'm glad he played for us.
5. Carey busting a pack round 22 1990. Just a tall kid with promise, in a side getting shellacked, but he walked through 2 or 3 of our famously tough halfbackline like they weren't there and kicked an angry goal in the 3rd (IIRC). Even a one-eyed celebrating Pie like me sat up and took notice, and I wondered if this bloke and not the failed centurion Horse was the one to watch.
