But different format to the traditional 7 Footy Marathons of the past.

GFs only, and not necessarily the best ones, so highlights from any part of the game not the final quarter exclusively, all done in an attempt to get all clubs represented in some way in the marathon...although for Fremantle and Port Adelaide (Channel 10 footage in '04) its not applicable.

It's still a rival network with ex-7 commenatators like Huddo.

Fox = late 60s and early 70s ABC GFs and GFs since 2002, so yes you are right, the 10 footage...in total, we are talking about 15 GFs at most that they could use...only 1987 from the 80s, nothing from the
90s

Well Fox has had access to all the ABC GF's prior to 1987 (with the likes of Morphett, Lane, Fitzpatrick, Leek, Heywood, Cleland and co as callers)...anyone who ever saw the old Winners With Flares show would know that the ABc coverage wasn't that bad.

ABC coverage of footy way back then was tops in my book. No ad breaks after a goal for starters. It was all about football not personalities.

Commercials are the things that make money for commercial networks.

Mind you, both the ABC and Seven did have great commentators. Nine and Channel 0/10 did too (anyone who saw the old VFA coverage on Channel 0 would agree with that...Phil Gibbs in particular made VFA footy great at the time).
