given that Burton & Hart are still out for another week, i would leave the 22 unchanged for the game against the Bulldogs (but i would hope that VB gets more than 30 minutes of game time) - i wouldnt mind so much if it was 30 minutes consecutive but to give him 5 minutes or so per quarter isnt much good - perhaps thats ok for his first few games so that he can get a feel of it, (ie the showdown atmosphere and then an away game) but we cant continue to use him so sparingly as IMO it would not aid his development

VB had 33 minutes of game time against Sydney for 1 handball. I'm a big fan of his but how can you say that he will learn more in this 33 minutes than by playing a full SANFL game. He's very hard at it but at this time lacks a bit of the one quality that is hard to teach - time when he gets the ball. His disposals are normally very rushed and he simply isn't used to the pace.

How can you assess that his disposals are normally very rushed when he's barely had a disposal?

It's interesting to watch the development of Martin Mattner, who seemed to have the basic tools for a while but now seems to have got his head around the idea that it's OK for him to be the one doing the creating. With due respect to Skipworth, and not understating how well he played on Sunday, he's not there yet. When he took that intercept mark at the 50 on Sunday, he made an attempt to balk around the man on the mark, and then deferred to a senior player (in this case, a flat footed Roo) rather than taking the responsibility of creating properly.

My assessment of VB at the moment is that he's doing well in the "team" things, partially because (IMHO) he's deferring to the senior players. It's easier for a kid in some respects to lay a shepherd for a Roo or a Macca than to get in their way. He's really only going to learn when it's his turn to get the footy, and his turn to do the team thing by game time at the AFL level.

Like others, I believe that Van Berlo needs at least 60 minutes on the ground this week.

just on a side note to the initial post what does it matter if he gets a nomination or not... as long as the kid can play it doesnt really matter whether he gets one at all, Stiffy never got one even when he played well so what does it matter??

I hear that Adelaide is going in unchanged again - so VB gets another game

I hope the Neil gives him a decent crap at it early on at least 15 minutes in the 1st quarter !

I heard the Doggies have elevated one of their rookies on the senior list and
intend on playing him. If the side management suits, then using the count on this guy could be a good learning curve.

The guy is called _____ Morris.. 22 yr old or somthing and 190cm.. Will be a mismatch if we play VB on him

If Ryan Griffen plays forward he could play on him. Should be a fair match up I would have thought.

Leave him in the 22 I say. He will learn more playing afl footy than sanfl.

you've misunderstood the situation. it is not a choice between laying afl and sanfl. It is a choice between NOT playing AFL and playing SANFL.
If he gets 5 or 10 minutes a game, and or 2 touches that is not 'playing' AFL. That is bench warming.

Exactly right.

It would be more benefitial for a youngster to play a full game in the SANFL than it is playing 10 minutes in the AFL.

VB has been given a taste of what AFL footy is like and has done a decent job in the game time he has had but he should probably be dropped in the next couple of weeks.
