Some profiles prior to his drafting:

Quigley:

3. West Coast – Trent Cotchin - DOB 7/4/90 Ht 184 Wt 81
Cotchin comes into the draft with a huge reputation and if he is available and the West Coast are not gun shy about high profile Victorian prospects I think they will take him. He is probably the prospect that has the most chance of replacing what they lost in the Judd trade and so he is the logical choice. If Richmond take Cotchin though, Morton is no certainty to be taken by West Coast. He doesn’t have the grunt in the middle that they need with the loss of Judd and Cousins and with the family history they might decide to go with the likes of Masten or Palmer.

Only Kreuzer has gotten more hype than Cotchin and despite a relatively poor championships is still likely to go in the top three. Cotchin is a classy player who has good vision and uses the ball extremely well when he gets it. The weighting of his kicks is very good and he picks out his men in traffic very well. The options he takes are usually the right ones and he looks like a smart player. He has good pace and a long loping stride that eats up the ground. A couple of preseasons to really build on his endurance base is going to make him a difficult match up for anyone. Weaver has him starting his career up forward but for me I think he would be better suited on a wing or off HBF where he can use that run and vision ahead of him to set up his forwards. From what I have seen he seems like he is willing to do the hard things, put his head over the ball, lay tackles and shepherds and the other 1%ers which often get overlooked on Big Footy when assessing a player.

Despite all the positives the Championships did throw up some concerns for teams likely to draft him. He struggled to break his tag particularly against WA where he was dominated by McGinnity who managed to get 21 possessions himself. There was thought amongst those commentating the match that he just wasn’t prepared to work hard enough. That will raise red flags for teams. Another red flag would also have been his coming off worried about him hurting his draft stock rather than that the team was getting smashed. Self-centred and not willing to work – not the message anyone would want to give at the champs. One thing which I have noticed is that he tends to get his hands to a lot of balls but is too often unable to control it. He doesn’t have that one touch control that Morton and top flight extractor midfielders exhibit so well. Going back to him playing up forward I also don’t think he has the goal sense that others like Palmer, Rioli and even Grimes have shown. All the negatives are not to suggest that I don’t rate him but more that I believe he is not the can’t miss prospect that many consider him to be.

BigFooty Mock Draft - TOA:

#2 - Trent Cotchin - Medium Midfielder - Northern Knights - 185cm, 80kg

Tigers are stoked to snare who we rate as the best player in the draft. Cotchin is a very bottom-age, classy, balanced and smart HFF/onballer. He always has time on the ball, nearly always picks the right option and will hit the target with the kick. His pace is very good although not express. Trent is strong overhead aswell as through the hips. Sound too good to be true? Perhaps. There is a slight doubt on whether he will be an AFL midfielder in the long term, some might argue he will only be a HFF. Whether that concern is real or not, I believe Cotchin is too good to overlook.

Snoop Dog:

# 4 Melbourne - Trent Cotchin (Northern Knights / 184cm / 81kg)

Have debated this selection for some time. Its not obvious because whilst Cotchin is easily the classiest player going around at TAC level he really didn’t show it on the national stage. Boak was not dissimilar and was still taken at #5 last year. I discounted Boak on his Championships – not going to make that mistake with Cotchin.

Kid has a wonderful pedigree. AIS scholarship member, capt the side that went to South Africa and was terrific at u15/16 level. Plays for Northern at TAC level but spent a lot of time playing school footy. Very creative midfielder with lovely skills and also enjoys a burst in the fwd line where he can take a mark.

TFLUA-Tiger:

Pick 2 > Richmond - Trent Cotchin - 184cm - 81kgs - Northern Knights (Mid/HFF)

Richmond are crying out for classy finishers, and in Trent Cotchin they have got their man. Great disposal on both sides of the body and good pace as well as knack for kicking goals will ensure that Greg Miller will pick up the Victorian dynamo with pick 2. Cotchin is easily the best midfielder in the draft, despite the fact he will start his AFL career as a half forward flanker. Dangerous when he has got the ball, with elite speed, Trent Cotchin hurts the opposition and it is impossible to pass on him with Pick 2.

Weaver:

1. Carlton - Trent Cotchin

Yes I think Kreuzer will go at 1, but where is the fun in that? The Blues lack finishers and could do well to complement their grunts and extractors with someone who can create and take goals. Cotchin has an electrically quick footy mind that sees him move before anyone else and exceptional reading of play that is almost like he has seen the movie already and is spoiling the ending. He is two footed, quick over the import 2-3 metres to get out of a crowd and get his kick away. He has a lovely little talent for dispossessing people … he could run through a pack and come out with their wallets.

He lacks stamina and will be run down over 10 metres. Never bothered to do too much defending. If he can get genuinely fit and improve his kicking from excellent to great he could match Gary Ablett jnr. At worst he shapes as a 30 goal HFF and a talent-tease.

Matt Burgan:

2 – RICHMOND – TRENT COTCHIN

Northern Knights, VIC, Medium midfielder, April 7 1990, 185.1cm, 79kg

Rated by most as the best midfielder in this year's draft, Cotchin is also regarded by many as the finest in the 2007 pool. It is believed Richmond agrees with both notions and will have no hesitation in selecting him. He has already spent time at Punt Rd during his stint with the AIS-AFL Academy program and coach Terry Wallace is believed to be a massive fan. With Mitch Morton recently traded to Richmond, it was thought his younger brother Cale would also land at Punt Rd, but expect the local lad instead.

Bio: A versatile medium midfielder/forward capable of influencing games with his ball-winning ability and outstanding disposal. He has an excellent understanding of the game, reads the play well and is a quality decision maker. A penetrating kick, he has rare ball skills on both sides of the body. Dominated with 37 touches in the Knights' first qualifying final against Gippsland.

Lol @ Quigley: "he tends to get his hands to a lot of balls but is too often unable to control it. He doesn’t have that one touch control". Has anyone ever seen Cotch fumble? Ever?

Anyone who has read The Draft will know the bit about him worrying about his draft stock was a joke he made that was taken way out of context.

Given a free run with injury this kid could be the best player in the league within 2-3 years.

Absolutely never fumbles - a few comments in Quigs' review that made me raise my eyebrows at the time. There were fears he was more style than substance, but I didn't think anyone doubted that he was silky and clean. Posting both positive and negative reviews I thought provided a little bit of an eye opener.

Even with the best junior picks there's always lingering fears.

Alright, I've been very slack since picking Cotch as my 'buddy' at pick 2 in the draft as I've been overseas but I'm all good to go now. Watched the whole game on Fri night and was very impressed with Cotch's game overall, but the one thing that stood out to me was how much quicker he was across the ground. Seems to me that with full confidence in his achilles and calves he is able to explode towards the ball. Has me giddy with excitement.

That's been the missing piece. Look out comp.

Obviously we all know young Trent didn't play on Friday but I do have a good story about him. I went to the game with two mates who haven't got their memberships yet and were hoping to just buy tickets there. Turns out there are no ATM's outside or near the ground so just as they were about to leave, a bloke comes up and offers us three tickets, that bloke was Cotch as you may have already guessed, he was walking around with his stunning gf and handing out tickets. Couldn't have been any nicer, and seemed genuinely happy that we were coming along.

I think this is the great Cotch GF. Her name is Brooke Kennedy.

After watching Trent pretty intensely at the last few games, as I was very keen to see his contested work, I have noticed just how well he uses his body in contests. He rarely leaves the ground and waits until his opponent does so before pushing them out with his hips. The perfect example of this was in the last half on the weekend, there was a contest in the forward 50 where he perfectly manoeuvred his man under the ball, grabbed it and spun towards goal. This kid is only scratching the surface of his ability and will be something incredibly special.

Everyone knows how well Trent played on the weekend, 25? Possesions and four goals from memory, but it was his battle with Pav, a player I rate as absolutely elite, that I concerned myself with most. At the stoppages, Cotch used his body really well against such a bigger opponent, by blocking and cutting off Pav's run at the ball. Can still tell he is buggered at most contests, but is willing to gut run and make as many of them as he can. Is building to be quite the special player.

Cotchin Richmond Best and Fairest easily hes $34 for the brownlow which I think he will go good in ( 12 - 17 Votes ) He will be a superstar has ton be captain soon maybe 2013 ?
