I was going to write an article about this, but I haven't got any time as I got caught up with other things. Anyway.
Essendon had gone all year without losing the game. It looked more and more possible that they would remain undefeated until the faced the Bulldogs. They smashed them earlier in the year, but Terry Wallace used sneaky tactics not really know back then; flooding.
Essendon were strangled and nearly held on for a win until Dustin Fletcher got a boot to the ball and out of bounds to give a free kick to Chris Grant (?) who drilled the goal. The Bulldogs ended up winning by 11 points, giving Essendon their first, and only loss for the season.
Now I haven't actually seen the match and have only seen Essendon highlights, so I'm just going by old articles I've read a while ago.
But yes, probably the loss we needed going into the finals.
