The Hawks picked Roughead before Franklin because they wanted both and heard Richmond were much keener on Roughy than Lance. So it was a calculated gamble that paid of spectacularly.

Griffen & Deledio get let off the hook because they both had 200+ game AA careers, whereas Tambling never amounted to more than a running joke who has Biggest Draft Bust in History comfortably sewn up, unless you'd care to nominate Fiora or Lounder instead?

Franklin was widely considered to be a loose unit and a massive risk, but with reward if he could be moulded. The Tiges played conservatively. A lot of the whippersnappers around here probably weren't even shaving back then and don't really have the full picture. A lot of clubs would have taken Tambling first. The fact Buddy turned out to be all time just puts it under the microscope more.

So whilst it didn't turn out 100%, it was what most clubs thought was right. (kudos to Hawks for taking the punt)
