Started a thread earlier this year but can not find it, personally I don't think we will get many in. A lot of our players will be considered but I don't think we have any 100% locks. In order though I think the following are most likely.

MJ - backed up a solid year last year, versatile, consistent and can play on a player or if let loose can cause havoc. I think he gets in.

Fyfe - coaches and media love him in the votes, he is often tagged which doesn't effect his output much. Does some spectacular things and was close in 2011 to selection. I honk he gets a bench spot.

Mayne - an extra 10 goals for the year he'd be a lock I reckon but he is the perfect modern day forward and his status has gone through the roof his year. Squad nom.

Sonson - better than Lindsay Thomas at everything, has scored goals in 2-3s consistently, sets up others with smart play and pushes hard up the ground. Squad nom.

Mundy/Barlow - both excellent years but not as good as guys like swan, pendles, ablett, jack, hanneberry etc so hard to even get them in the squad. Perhaps both have been too patchy if being critical.

Ibbo - missed too many games now but he was phenomenal and would have pushed MJ for a spot in the team had he kept going.

Luke McP - the best key back in the league but missed too many games, lock him down for norm smith when he smashes buddy and roughy together!

Oh I forgot Crowley - don't think they will pick a tagger but if they did its be down to him or Kane Cornes. A spot in the squad would be a nice reward and would rub plenty of ppl the wrong way!

MJ would be the most deserving. Fyfe will likely get a bench spot.
the rest i wouldn't give much chance, for various reasons as you mentioned.
personally, i'd be pleased if MJ was our only nomination... think he's earnt some recognition.

I would really like to see a change in the way the AA team is selected. Actually pick the players for the spot they play - e.g. would like to see someone like Wingard or Walters in the forward pocket instead of cramming a midfielder in there just because they couldn't get them in the middle.

If Aussie Rules was a huge international sport and we actually play someone like in a world cup, Crowley would be selected everyday of the week.
I agree, a genuine representative team would have Crowley picking himself. They'll choose an unaccountable ball magnet/head to head midfielder in his place.

I think that we will have a lot of players in the initial squad but not many past that in the final 22. With us having the best defence in the comp. I find it interesting that we will only maybe have one player in there and MJ is no lock.
Fyfe must get a gig somewhere and Walters will be unlucky to miss out.

I'm pretty close to the OP on this:

I think Fyfe and MJ are a red hot chance - both debutantes which is cool.

Walters hasn't played quite enough and has gone off the boil just a touch since his injury - might be a smokey because none of the big name small forwards have had consistently massive years. Wingard, Thomas and even the over-hyped Rioli are chances, or they may just replace the sml-fwd spot with yet another midfielder.

Mayne and Crowley are no chance because they don't pick AA's on position or to play a real game of footy. If it were, they'd be locked in to any AA team except one put together by a complete imbecile.

Ibbo, Elvis - not enough games probably.

Mundy/Barlow - a chance, but there's lots of midfielders to choose from so it's a bit of lucky dip with the Vic based players as usual getting the advantage.

Johnson has to be a definite, he's been amazing this year.
Fyfe 50/50
Barlow should get it (despite the flashiness of Fyfe and Mundy he's still our best and most consistent midfielder, and will poll the most brownlow votes) but probably won't get it because commentators find him boring.
The only real smokey is Ballantyne because his second half of the year has been amazing, and its possible the selectors might forget that he was pretty average for the first half of the year.

Walters more likely for me then Ballantyne.

Johnson the most likely to get in. Barlow, Fyfe a chance, too. Don't think anyone else is in the mix (Ibbo and Mcpharlin mised to many games).

All of those should make the squad but none is a certainty to make the finals team. Still a few should get in considering our position and a bit of media hype about us at the moment...

Wouldn't bother me if no Freo player made AA this year. A team that finishes top 4 with no AA selections, I believe, is a well rounded team with no real passengers . Everyone has done their bit this year and that is more important.

If the AA selection panel is the same as last year, despite the fact that I think Gerard Healey is generally a reasonable judge, then the team selections may have very little to do with who has had outstanding seasons, given last's year's screaming nonsense.
On their current track records it is quite obvious that clivenator26 should head up the AA selection panel for 2013.

mayne a chance. Lots of love from the commentators recently and getting talked up more than any other player in our side by the media, at least that i've heard.

at risk of opening a can of worms, how many games did nicnat play last year when he made the squad?

Fyfe and MJ are locks I recon.
They usually pick a small forward so Walters and Ballaz would come under serious consideration.
Then the maybe's: Ibbo, Barlow, Mundy.
The should but won't: Crowley

Be very happy if we get 3-4.
