Pick 45 in the 1998 National Draft

how do u guys feel about this?

Do u rate him ?
Shattock has been very unfortunate with his injuries. Just as he was establishing a regular place in the team he allways seemed to get longer term injuries. I expected a draft pick in the mid to late twenties. I guess the Lions were not about to stand in Aaron's way of returning home and did not barter for a few better draft spots. Overall a sutisfying result for all concerned. Don't know where Port will fit him in.

Re: Aaron Shattock

Not bad if it is for selection 35. Probably not in our best 22 to start, but could force his way in ala Josh Mahoney.

Re: Aaron Shattock

Brisbane trading yet another player back to their home state.

Love it.

Adds more weight to the argument.

Watch this space for a full wrap up after trade week finishes!

Re: Aaron Shattock

A mid 20's pick is about right, but at a draft pick is a draft pick. In that area of the draft we have gained players like Pike, Selwood, B McDonald, Black and so on, so the possibilities are there.

Re: Aaron Shattock

Can anyone actually confirm that this has happened or it is still conjecture.

Not surprised that Shattock wants to start again as he hasn't had many opportunities, even when not injured.

Is there any rumours about Hadley and McGrath?

Cause no one else has had to do that yet.

L-Nizzy, everyone loses players that way. Always will. For every hard luck story for a club losing a young champion, there's a good luck story of a 'home' club picking up a keen, ready-made player for not a lot of money. The Pies have had such happy stories with homesickness in Pebbles, O'Bree, Williams (ok, maybe not so joyous there - but Mickey's call). Brodie's certainly a lot closer to home. You've lost Nick Davis in that time.

Balmey's basically fumbled or ignored most of the good Victorians returning home over the last few years - Kane Johnston, Leigh Brown, Jess Sinclair, Nick Stevens. Morrison and Chambers are good players heading to Victoria (although Mick's not had good luck with WC players - Adkins has been better than Williams). Certainly great opportunities available to pick up some ready-made players.

Scott McIvor in 1990 (from memory) is still the only footballer to ever 'go home to Brisbane'.

Therein, lies the heart argument.

Re: Aaron Shattock

As of 12:30pm the deal wasn't going through unless Port came up with something better.... wait for the 2pm deadline I suppose?

Shatts gone to Port for picks 27 and 37.

Re: Aaron Shattock

OUT: Shattock and #34
IN: #27 and #45

Re: Aaron Shattock

Is this trade the most incompetent deal in Lions' history of trading?
Effectively we've lost Aaron for a seven picks jump in the second
round. Whoever did this deal should be sacked now. No questions asked.
This is pathetic from a reputedly professional organisation.

Shatock gone for a third round pick. Port must be laughing at our
incompetence. We've been scre.wed deep in the ass without lubricant.

Re: Aaron Shattock

i think we lost on this one, shatts was another one of our young twenty somethings like hadley, notting, mcgrath, power, charman, mcgrath, mcdonald ect, now we have to start the whole process again

i thought shatts was a good player personally.

Do you mean that because we lost a second > third tier player we have to start from scratch? I'm pretty sure we can cover this lose with any one of Brennan, Corrie, Pratt, Adcock etc. Don't get me wrong, I liked Shatts as a player but he wasn't one of our top ten or even twenty.

Re: Aaron Shattock

Shatts has showed something really promising, to trade him for a low draft pick is a bit dodgy considering how long it will take to develop this player, if he turns out any good in the first place.

I agree.

I love Shatts - he's hard at it, but he's not the most skilful bloke going around. I think some of the people on this board are overrating his ability. That said, with hard work and some luck with injuries, I can see him possibly slotting into Damian Hardwick's role across half-back at Port.

And I think he saw Hadley, MacDonald and possibly Pratt go past him this year and thought it was time to move. Not to mention Selwood, Adcock, Corrie, Logan and Rischitelli in the wings.

I read someone from the Lions staff saying that the salary cap squeezed him out.

Anyway, good luck to the bloke. Hope he goes well.

Re: Aaron Shattock

He was probably a bit lucky to make the 2002 GF side, but he was a first change onballer by the end of 2003 when he did his knee in the final game against the Doggies (same game Brad Scott broke his leg). He's probably only played one poor game in 4 years - unfortunately that was his last, at Freo in a terribly under-manned side (Medhurst chopped him up, amongst others). Shortly after that game he got stress fractures. Good Night Irene.

The first 50 games of most players are just an investment that hopefully pays dividends later. Just seems to me, we've paid for his apprenticeship and Port are getting the good tradesman. We can't get those 50 games back and plug them into Adcock.

Shatts couldn't have been on massive coin, surely? $160 -$170?

Re: Aaron Shattock

17 players traded in total.

12 players change States.

9 (not including Heath Black, who moved for his partner's family) players went back to their home State.

75% of players who changed states, went "home".

85% two years ago.

Notice a common theme?

All the more justification for Sydney & Brisbane concessions.

Re: Aaron Shattock

Shattock fit and ready for Powerful start
Shattock, who was drafted by Brisbane from Woodville-West Torrens in 1998, said it wasn’t a desire to return to Adelaide that got him to Port, instead he handpicked the Power as the club that was best for his career.

“The ‘come home’ factor wasn’t really an issue,” he said. “I probably class myself as a Queenslander more than a South Australian now.

“It was more that Port Adelaide seemed like a good fit. My parents don’t even live in Adelaide (they live in Darwin). So it was just (a matter of) trying to get the club that fitted the best and that was Port.

“Port Adelaide was pretty interested in me so I didn’t really speak to anyone else.

“In the end the deal went through so I couldn’t be happier”
