The Odean is a good place to go, obviously no bells and whistles like the newer cinemas, but for $8 (new price) you cant complain and their food prices are very reasonable as well.

Large popcorn, drink and icecream for $10 etc

Went to the Odeon Monday to see Slumdog Millionaire. Tickets are still $7 (well, they were Monday). The cinemas are a tad pokey, but other than that, they're relatively modern (on par with Palace Nova IMO), and certainly much cleaner than any Greater Union or Hoyts.

Any good? load of shit? worth the hype from the Academy awards.

What's your take on the movie?

It is a very good movie, and definately worth the hype. Surprised the Americans understood the movie though (and enough to dish out a few awards for it), particularly with the cricket references towards the end of the movie.

Burnside council have now voted for the sale of Chelsea

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,25203610-5006301,00.html

I'm a tad surprised at some of the outcry over the sale of this cinema. I wonder if those upset at the sale have actually been to Chelsea recently (obviously not as Wallis have reported the cinema has been operating at a loss for years). As Wallis have admitted themselves in this article, the cinema does have 'major maintenance issues' (I take it the rats I've mentioned in this thread would be one of these issues), and even compared to other older cinemas such as the Odeon, Chelsea is in a state of disrepair.

If you guys want an old school cinema experience, then I suggest you pay the Lobethal Pictures a visit. The cinema is upstairs in the town hall and has had little modification in the last 40 years. The old ladies who work there are really friendly and the local ads are so corny/low budget that it is quite funny. Plus you can go get a hot drink during the interval.

The Capri cinema in Goodwood is worth a visit for anyone who has never been, especially on organ night.

I went to the final night of the Blueline drive-in at West Beach - to see A Bugs Life (I was 10 IIRC). I also used to go to the Valleyline drive-in at St Agnes quite frequently in the 90s - they used to get a decent number of cars in there but Stratco wanted cheap land.

And what ever happened to Dazzleland in the Myer Centre? I heard rumours about someone jumping/falling off the rollercoaster but they are probably just that...rumours.

To this day I still reckon Valleyline was the best drive-in out of the lot. Mainline's alright but it doesn't have that old-school charm Valleyline. Valleyline also had the old school canteen and cash registers right to the end. IMO, the only thing keeping Mainline open is the Sunday trash and treasure market.

As for Dazzelland, it's major flaw was that besides the dodgems, roller coaster, and standard arcade games, everything else was targeted at small children and was quite pricey for it's time. I think the 'rumours' about the roller coaster were more urban myth than anything else.

People were committing suicide often in the centre when it first opened which is why the sails were soon erected as a deterent. I knew someone who worked in Myer and there was usually at least one a month where people were throwing themselves from the top level.

Noone ever fell off the rollercoaster, I think it just simply did not make enough money so it was closed. It was a shame, but it was poorly located and the centre is a disgrace when it comes to the speed of the lifts and how poorly placed the escaltors are. It was a nightmare trying to get up there.

Whilst Wallis are offloading Chelsea, it looks like the Mainline drive-in is here to stay, with the possible introduction of a second screen.

Somewhat surpised at this, as when I went to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop there in March the place was near empty (we parked next to the projector room and there were no cars behind us, and about 12 cars in the entire drive-in). Though, at $20/carload, it certainly is a great, cheap option in these tough economic times, as long as the right movie is on.
