Tonight on Ch10 News, Tim Gossage was reporting on a controversial "point" that Adelaide scored in the third quarter. Riccuto had a snap from just inside 50 and Robbie Haddrill got back to get hands on the ball right on the line. The ball bounced on the line and then hit the left hand goal post.
Channel 10 were reporting that it should have been a goal or play on. Have I missed some important detail in support of these claims?
Because the ball hit the post, isn't it deemed a point, and with the goal umpire right there, Robbie obviously touched the ball before it crossed the line and hence the correct decision was made.
Did anyone else see this report or can set me straight? Dennis Confetti had nothing on the issue on Ch9

You guys are right on the money with Gossage. He always has some wacky news that no-one else reports on and is never heard of again (like Sandilands having a part in the up coming StarWars movie).
I was just curious about this one cause it just didn't make any sense. They must have been hard up to fill the sport segment for them to run with that garbage.

Yeah I saw it and the report was a bunch of arse. The ball definately hit the post. Gossage was trying to say that either Robbie touched the ball after it had crossed the line (and hence should have been paid a goal) OR it never actually crossed the line and should have been deemed to still be in play. No consideration for the fact that the ball clearly hit the post after Hadders got his hand to it. Thus the correct decision was made and 1 point awarded. It seems quite a few media goons are doing their darndest to downplay this victory.

Stupid, no, but ignorant, yes. I bet there's a few supporters of certain opposition teams that are lapping it up. You watch, a heap of freo supporters will cop "you didn't even win the game!!" tomorrow...

They can say what they like , deep down us Freo fans will be quite content with "another 4 pts" while Eagles fans will deep down be seething with another display that left little to be desired

Good call Ripper.

Gossage certainly commands none of my respect when it comes to football.

I agree just another WA media conspiracy to take the heat off their beloved Weagles.
Last week the Weagles were Premiership favourites in WA and they were making comparisons to the Great 92 & 94 premiership teams what a load of toss. This week they have all the excuses. A week is a long time in footy.

Anyone listen to 6pr last night? Apparently Freo didnt deserve to win.
Most of the program revolved around the spear tackle, nothing at all about the Eagles deplorable effort. Apparently they need a CHF and all will be alright?

I seem to recall when Freo got flogged (No where near as bad) by Port, Hardie was going off his nut about the insipid Dockers (Sack Scwab, Croad blah blah).

Did anyone hear his claim during the footy commentry on ten that no-one in WA called the afternoon wind the Freo Doctor. Perhaps the idiot could have asked someone who is actually from the Freo area as I can recall my grandfather , rest his soul, calling it that when I was a small child.

Goosage should refrain from making any comment about freo or football, 2 subjects he knows nothing about

I think people are just a bit sick of some of the treatment, carneagles.

In the past, we have been given hiding in the press, and a lot of the time, quite deservedly so.

But, you'd think that after a victory like the one on the weekend, that certain cretins in the media might actually say "Hey, Freo did pretty good, y'know". But no, they still find a way to get negative on us, even if it's crap.

Anyhow, that's my rant. Winners should definitely be grinners, I agree, and I am grinning, believe me. Sometimes it's through clenched teeth though.

Pete, I dont think that story is as wacky as it sounds.
The Star Wars producers spoke to a large number of tall Australian sportspeople to fill the role of Chewbacca in the upcoming Star Wars flick.
Mostly basketballers were interviewed but sandilands may have been considered for his height.
There was an article about this in The Australian about three weeks ago.
While Gossage may be full of **** on this point issue, he probably had somewthing to back up his Sandilands story.

Tim Gossage is abit like Chopper Read , He never lets the truth get in the way of a good yarn. Makes me wonder how is a sprts journo and not a story teller on Play School.

I think the safest thing as a supporter is just ignore the media completely, even if they're talking your blokes up. You can't trust that breed, they'll turn on you as soon as it suits.

And you won't miss much. When was the last time you got a genuine insight into the game from a media pundit? Maybe one or two have a clue, the rest are lemmings.

I shall add this to my list of conspiracy theories

"WA reporter makes up story about controversial goal umpiring decision to take the heat off the Eagles who are stitting third on the ladder and have been at least that high for about ten weeks"

You guys are deluded.

FWIW, I wound my tape back to the said incident, and it goes a little something like this:

Ricuitto screws the ball around his shoulder from maybe thirty out, it's close, Haddrill has it covered, touches it at about head height, knocks the ball down ON THE LINE, it bounces up to hit into the post maybe half a metre up, maybe just a little behind the post. Goal umpire is in perfect position, and makes a correct decision.

What a non-story.

I was thinking about this and if the ball is only out of bounds when the entire ball has crossed the boundary line, shouldn't the goal posts be on the outside of the boundary line instead of on the boundary line?

Think about it for a second, the goal posts are technically positioned in the field of play.

You are 100% correct on that - which is one of the arguments I use that if the ball hits the post and comes back into play it should be play on. Similarly it should be a goal if it goes through on the goal side of the post.
