In light of going to Hindmarsh Stadium last night I have been thinking about how to incorporate a "Football Precinct" in that area.

Hindmarsh Stadium is about 2.5kms from the Adelaide Railway Station. Which is about the same distance the G is from Flinders St. Walking distance.

  • Develop Hindmarsh into a 40k Capacity. It can be done. Steep seating and build up.
  • Govt buys some of the Clipsal site or another premise down there and builds a multi storey carpark. This can be used for Hindmarsh Stadium, EntCentre, New Stadium and even gigs at The Gov.
  • Directly across the Brewery build a Telstra Dome type stadium. Give the SANFL a peppercorn lease on the land and let them have ownership of the stadium, to get Footy into the City area. Sell off West lakes to help fund new Stadium. SANFL retains full control.
Then you can link the City with a walking track from the new Hospital to the precinct. The loss of the Parklands would be minimal as the area I have in mind is wasted with carparks and is not looked after well anyway. You would still retain the area where the Circus sets up. An added bonus is that this area could be used for those who want BBQs on match day, ie gold members can park there. Much like Max Basheer reserve is now. This would be lost on any other city site. And I know it is an enjoyable part of the day for many of us.

There are two train stations in the area, North Adelaide and Bowden, plus a Tram is being sent down there in the near future.

I know this is a pipe dream, but thoughts??

I think you will find that the State Gov is planning on creating a park and ride interchange (tram?) to the Ent. Center for better transport to the area

exactly correct - trams have been ordered

super idea though

I think you'll find it can't be done, and this has been well explored and documented. Have you ever been to Hindmarsh? The ground does not have anywhere near a large enough footprint to accommodate the base necessary to support a second tier around the ground - nearby houses would need to be demolished, and roads closed and diverted, including Manton St. Trying to build up on the existing stands would lead to a Civil engineer beating you to death with an ethics textbook. That's before you even get to the complete lack of parking anywhere near the place.

See the stadium here, the depth of the stands would need to be doubled in order to accomodate a second tier that brings capacity up to 40k. Notice how the long stands, including the existing two tier one, don't even stretch the entire length of the ground because roads are in the way.

Sorry, but your proposal falls flat at the first bullet point.

A brand new rectangular football pitch (also useful for Rugby) somewhere around here is the go, actually give Mile End railway station a reason for existing again.

  • Developing Hindmarsh Stadium is not realistic because of the land available and even if it was, i assume it cost approximately $150,000,000 to $200,000,000 and if the state government was willing to do that – why not just implement Dario Fontanarosa plan of a new 45,000 seat inner city stadium at $270,000,000 and be done with it?

[*] Govt buys some of the Clipsal site or another premise down there and builds a multi storey carpark. This can be used for Hindmarsh Stadium, EntCentre, New Stadium and even gigs at The Gov.

Hasn’t this land already been sold and a property develop had idea for a housing estate?

And didn’t the state government announce the tram line would be extended down Port Road to the Entertainment Centre in the last state budget?

With the $100,000,000 upgrade and the Adelaide Football Club having already started building their new clubs room the SANFL will not leave AAMI Stadium for 25 years. The only way Adelaide will get a new stadium is if it’s for soccer. AFL is staying at West Lakes. End of story.

Good idea but it will never happen.

You could probably develop Hindmarsh to fit 25,000, that is about it.

No, Adelaide had an ideal site down by West Terrace and said no because the conservatives are stupid and the SANFL has invested in AAMI so they can't or don't want to leave.

Adelaide had the chance for a multi purpose stadium in walking distance to the city and close to train and possibly a future tram but said no in favour of a 1970's bowl.

Fact

Yeah I knew all that hence last line saying its a pipe dream

The carpark could be scrapped and park in city with shuttle trams for those not wanting to walk or gold members can park where the circus sits and have their BBQs...

Those Parklands are a waste of space and an eyesore. Rarely are used and ripe for development.

The state and city cant sustain a 4th. stadium, the Adelaide oval is one of the best cricket grounds in the world, Aami is a very good footie stadium with a wonderful playing surface, just needs a bit of upgrading. Soccer has its own stadium at Hindmarsh that it can do what it wants with,
was it ever fully paid for?
So we certainly don't want another stadium.

I see nothing wrong with AAMI that an upgrade won't fix.
What I do think they should do is turn the Boulevard into one way after the game - everyone coming out of the car park on the western side uses all lanes to head to Tapleys Hill road , and either turn left or right at Frederick road or continue to TH Road and turn left or right there. Middle two lanes could just go straight up to Clarke Tce spreading the traffic north and south again .
Anyone coming out of the shopping centre onto the boulevard turns west and splits up at the end either north or south on Military road.

This would empty the car parks much quicker.

I lived at West Lakes and the diversion of the traffic for the few hours before the game were not a drama - so the same inconvenience for say an hour after the game would not create too many problems either.

Sportsmans Drive and Turner drive along the golf course would take much less traffic that way.

I have tried about 5 ways to get home,(I now live about 8 kms away) but it is the botttleneck getting OUT of the car park that takes the majority of time.:)

I am getting more and more sh!tted off after paying for my members car park and then getting told by the red coats that I gotta park up near the shed.

This has happened 3 times this year when there were spaces closer to the stadium. A few years ago, members area was on the western and northern side of the arena - now we are getting shoved out into the public car park.
I have to get member's car park coz I work Sat til 6.30 and need to be guaranteed a park relatively close, but this is getting ridiculous.
