Dont get me wrong, im as proud an Aussie as you can get, and when i hear the national anthem at big time sporting events the hairs on the back of my neck are standing on end as much as the next bloke.

But hearing the painful, pathetic version sung tonight by Wazza's mob (it sounded like about 8 out of tune drunken yobbos) before the Stosur V Hingis game..... Im sorry but that was just pathetic. By all means lets get behind Stosur but for gods sake if thats the best you can do with the anthem dont bother Wazza and co.

And could someone explain to me how the 'fanatics' group evolved? Are they an official organization? Who funds them? I dont think im the ony one, but they are an absolute embarrasment at times.

Gotta agree with you there. Its just as bad as the Aussie oi,oi,oi chant.I think those girls will look back in a few years time and think why did we do that?

Unit,
I was there last night and it was embarassing for everyone.

About 5 minutes before the match, the group of 'fanatics' or whatever you want to call them decided to sing the national anthem expecting everyone else to join in with them.
There was just silence from all concerned !!!!!

Their chants were just as cringe worthy.
Some examples included :
*The ever present Oi Oi Oi (whoever invented that should be deported)
* "If you want Sam to win clap your hands"
* "Give me an S, give me an A etc etc."

Its funny when you have a close look at them there are not too many non Anglo faces (dare I say none) amongst them. The future Cronulla bogans ??

I don't often agree with Patrick Smith but he does have a point when he says that Australian crowds on the world stage are probably the worst going around.

The worst case occurs when an Australian is playing a Swede. The Swedish fans will sing some elaborate chant often involving different groups around the arena (i.e. answering each other). This will be answered a group of yobbos singing Aussie. Aussie. Aussie. Oi.Oi.Oi. I think that Australian crowds don't really have a culture of chanting. Thats why the rendition of Waltzing Matilda before the penalty shootout against Uruguay was sensational and such a proud moment.

The evolved through the Davis Cup, they are a business these days, pure & simple.

Last seen (allegedly) making off with loads of World Cup Tickets that should've gone to Football fans rather than Ra-Ra, Tennis, Cricket mobs that make up Fantiki.

Bell-ends the lot of 'em.

If thats right, its a disgrace.
Most of these guys wouldn't have a clue about the round game.

We'll be a laughing stock of all the other countries supporters if they try any of their weak as p**s chants.

They're not cool, tough, funny, smart, attractive, original, witty or any other adjective that would give them a remote possibility of being looked upon with affection. I hope soccer hooligans bash them at the World Cup, and give their tickets to anyone less cringe-worthy.

That actually gives me a warm feeling inside knowing that the Dutch, English and German hooligans might be in 'contact'.

They sure did. The fanatics had a travel company set up, Wallaby Travel. Therefore through their old connections to John O'Neil when he was CEO of Rugby Australia, he gave them the rights for the ticket allocation for the Football World Cup. It was a f##ken disgrace and many fans are really annoyed by this as the true football supporters have missed out.

What was even more annoying, a couple of weeks ago there was an article in the Weekend Australian about woz and his fanatics, at the very time the world cup tickets were getting allocated. Woz was quoted in the article as saying whenever our tennis and rugby players or swimmers or athletes compete you can be assured the fanatics will be there. There was no mention of Football at all. As someone who missed out on tickets, reading this just made me more ropeable.

TWG and Les Murray won't speak out about it, as the trade off for SBS securing socceroos TV rights was that they will no longer critise any of FFA's decisions.

The fanatics chants are so lame they are a pure embarassment. Patrick Smith summed them up by calling them nothing but Lleyton Hewitt Sycophants. Great line that.

Wow, they sound like a total bunch of d-ickheads. Glad I didnt run into any of em while I was at the tennis last week! I was at the Luzack game, rnd 3, on Margret Court, and there was a group there called 'The Heard', i believe. They were awesome.. alot of chants, n songs and had the crowd doing the mexican wave (n different 'versions' of it too) as well as a great Aussie anthem sung with great gusto!
