Opinion AFL 2024 Round 8 - Weekend Wrap & Liked, Learnt, Hated

A late finish to the round but nothing stops the Weekend Wrap!

Post your liked, learnt, hated below… along with any other gripes or musings you had from round 8.

Crows v Port, Thursday night: Remember when there used to be about a dozen Roman numerals in the Showdown title to let us know which one they were up to? They do things differently in South Australia don’t they... like playing an injured captain and just hoping everything will turn out fine. What on earth were Port thinking there? Maybe they’ll have better luck when Showdown XXYWGHIIIIII rolls around.

Blues v Pies, Friday night: Here’s an idea - let’s not bother with the first 95% of Carlton-Collingwood games anymore. It’s needlessly expended energy. Let’s just make the scores level with a couple of minutes to play. The dying moments seem to decide most games between these two anyway.

Swans v Giants, Saturday arvo: First on the ladder, hefty percentage, healthy list, another contender left in our wake… is it too soon to start talking dynasties?? I don’t think so!

Saints v North, Saturday twilight: Not much to say about this game, so let’s just take a moment to toast Darcy Wilson. The kid is a jet.

Demons v Cats, Saturday night: Melbourne are winning plenty of games this year, so I’m sure they won’t care whether they’re playing pretty or not. Hint: they’re not. They’re really, really not.

Eagles v Bombers, Saturday night: Hang on, wasn’t this the side that was going to be copping frequent 100 point losses?? Impossible not to be impressed with the fight the Eagles are showing, especially after Elliot Yeo went down during this game. Meanwhile can I just alert everyone to the fact that the Bombers have crept up to 5th on the ladder? Wowee.

Tigers v Dockers, Sunday arvo: Can’t really blame the Tigers VFL side for getting blown away in the last couple of weeks. Still don’t really know where to place the Dockers though. Next week might tell us a bit.

Dogs v Hawks, Sunday twilight: Look, full credit to the young Hawks, their pressure and run were really good all day. But go back and read the Weekend Wrap from the last two weeks and you’ll see exactly what I think of the up-and-down basket case that is the Western Bulldogs. Reliably unreliable. Impossible to predict. They’ve killed tipping comps everywhere… now have they just killed their coach?

Lions v Suns, Sunday night: I’m told there’s a public holiday in Queensland tomorrow, and clearly the Suns decided to start theirs early. Couldn’t get near Brisbane in the first couple of quarters, even with a bunch of players going down on the Lions bench.

Liked: Hawthorn playing good footy (still crap at defence though). Look out for a surprise 2024 finals appearance ;)

Learnt: Geelong are beatable (shock horror).

Hated: The AFL have to learn to read the room and stay away from "worldly" issues that they have the inability to control. Fair call to stop the Wayne Carey NSW hall of fame induction...... but what about the other players with DV transgressions against their name, stop fawning over those players and give them a serve too please and thank you.

Liked: Winning the Showdown, North's first quarter wasn't bad, West Coast gave the Bombers a good run, Brisbane were highly impressive in the face of adversity.

Learnt: Not a lot.

Hated: GWS were poor, Gold Coast were dreadful.

Liked: seeing Josh Treacy continue his growth into a bonafide key forward. Hayden Young nailing that goal off his right boot.

Learnt: Next week will really show us what the top 8 teams are about.

Hated: seeing underdone players being risked for midseason games.

Liked : Rivarly Round, although it should have been Dockers vs Eagles in this round.

Learned : Umpires need to be professional and when they they get paid professionally they should be allowed to be criticized and scrutinized just like players and coaches having a bad game.

Hated : No Hawthorn wooden spoon in the horizon.

Loved: Port Adelaide subbing off Rozee in the big big Showdown after playing him with a busted hammy, what a bunch of clowns.

Also, pleasant feelings knocking off the undefeated top-of-the-table premiership favourites.

Didn’t really hate anything tbh. Good weekend of footy.

big agree to all of this. sans the q clash, that game sucked.

liked: good football is good football, all the televised games were good or entertaining to watch/see the fallout of.

learnt: harley reid has the most high free kicks paid to him this season

Learnt - the premiership race is as even as I've seen in a long time.

Liked - that even though the Pies dominated in most aspects of the game and thoroughly deserved to beat us, we were still firmly in the contest and had our chances to snatch it.

Hated - seeing Tom Liberatore go through what he's going through. Hope he's all good soon.

Liked: Calsher Dear's debut. Always love when a plucky young talented player defies expectations and does a bit at AFL level. Might need a couple preseasons yet but what a way to debut.

Learnt: if Hinkley ain't sacked this week he's basically immune. Ditto with Bevo to a lesser extent.

Hated: punch ups between Blues and Pies fans at the game. Get a ****ing clue its just a game and not only that, doing it at an anti-violence themed round is pretty rank too.

Liked:
  • The crowd's emotion towards the last 5 minutes of close games.
  • West Coast getting it together.
  • Matt Hill on Fox and Jason Bennett on Ch7 are the best TV commentators by a long way.

Learnt:
  • 6-2 looks good on paper for GWS, but they've only beaten 1 team in the top 8, and that's Collingwood in Rd1 who have only found form in the last month.
  • The top 8 teams and order could look very different in a couple of months.

Hated:
  • Ch7 pumping in crowd noise to the broadcast.
  • Nth Melbourne continuing to skew the comp being uncompetitive. They look good for the first 15 minutes of every game then fall away dramatically. Lucky for those teams who play them twice.
  • The reliance on stats, especially disposals to judge a player's performance.

North are going to be down for quite a while, worst team since Fitzroy?
Yes, but probably not in the way you think. I'm looking at this as five consecutive bad seasons (as North are now up to that), so since Fitzroy won 19 games between 1992-93, that side isn't actually in contention.

The other dreadful teams of recent history still won a lot more than North have done; Gold Coast 2015-19 won 23 games (1 draw), Brisbane from 2014-18 managed 24 wins, Sydney 1990-94 managed 20 wins (but with two draws). 2010 and 2011 provided respite for Melbourne, so they never had a streak this bad in the modern era, but Melbourne from 1977-81 only won 22 games. The problem for North is that even if they win 8 games this year (which looks incredibly unlikely), they'll still be worse than all of these sides.

Looking back further, St Kilda have a few lean patches - they were abysmal from 1979-86, with their worst five year streak yielding only 19 wins. 1945-56 was a diabolical 12 year span - 52-56 came with only 16 wins (and another three spoons), 45-49 had only 13 wins.

However, the absolute worst multi year streak (outside of St Kilda's early days) was Fitzroy from 1962-68, with 19 wins in 7 years. The worst five year streak was 1963-67, with only 10 wins. Even if North go winless this season, they still won't 'top' that record.

Hope: WC continue to improve, love seeing DHs like cornes and wheatley shown to be FOS.

Mate while I felt for WCE and thought there were some extenuating circumstances for large parts of the club’s slump when you had an injury list that was so long it was just a joke, either side of that, the only thing more laughable was how pathetic the otherwise reasonably capable players were. Those pundits were right to sink the boot in and anyone taking the blinkers off will see this mini resurgence as proof of that, rather than proof that they were wrong.

Agree with your post, but the AFL are going to protect their brand before considering taking a moral and ethical stance.

Liked Dick Cyclones continued improvement
Learned Libba isn't subject to HIA's no matter how rooted he looks.
Hated getting to the pub yesterday and finding ufc is on rather than footy.

One player in particular has campaigned to end DV in the past..... yet DV is why his marriage ended. And he's still a public figure.

Drives me bonkers really.

Liked: Hawks getting a win, had us with 8 or 9 possible wins. So far we've had 4 of those games and we're 2-2. Melbourne Beating Geelong.

Learnt: If Melbourne had a proper key forward they'd be odds on to win the flag:

Hated: More disappointed than hated, GC Suns Couldn't make inroads on a team with only 1 fit player on the bench.
