Welcome to the Weekend Wrap Plus
Now with added Mondays for our premium subscribers! No time to waste so let’s get cracking…
Lions v Pies, Thursday night: The Lions had been employing a slow start, strong finish strategy in recent weeks. This time they went with the slow start, slow finish approach. The result? Collingwood kicked down the door to the Gabba fortress and plundered a smashing win! Premiership favourites or a bog average side having a purple patch? It’s reader’s choice!
North v Blues, Friday arvo: I’m told Good Friday is supposed to be a time of peaceful reflection. Maybe North should reflect on how utterly embarrassing this game was. Most of us thought they were set to improve this year, and after a big win against the Dees a few weeks ago it looked like they were on their way. They’ve since lost four in a row, the last three by a combined 199 points. Yikes. Well done Carlton though. Two 12+ goal wins in a row makes them the form team of the comp. No other way to describe them.
Eagles v Bombers, Friday twilight: How’s that for a scare! The Dons trailed all night against the WAFL reserves, picked up their bundle for long enough to build a lead, then nearly dropped it again late in the game. Vastly improved showing from the Eagles to nearly worry them out of it. Essendon fans need not worry though, they can build on this momentum with 7 of their next 8 games in the comfy surrounds of Melbourne. Must be nice to have that kind of draw.
Demons v Dockers, Saturday arvo: The 0-5 Demons versus the flaky Dockers… what could possibly go wrong?? You wouldn’t have given a brass razoo for Melbourne’s chances going in, but they played like the better team all afternoon as Kosi Pickett put the visitors to the sword. I did see a few Freo supporters laying in to a rebuilding West Coast side for “choking” the night before. Karma sucks hey.
Crows v Giants, Saturday twilight: Can we just forget this abomination ever happened? They should have called it off at half time. What a disgusting assault on the senses.
Tigers v Suns, Saturday night: Stirring stuff from the side that wasn’t supposed to win a game all year. Playing with the sort of spirit some higher-fancied sides would love to have right now. The comeback was decent from the Suns, but how did they find themselves 43 points down in the first place? Hope it’s not a return to the bad old days when they’d turn into a rabble after a bright start to the year. Next few weeks will be telling.
Swans v Port, Sunday arvo: If you picked the Swans to win this you’re a disgrace to tipping. We never beat Port in the home and away season, and our “key forward” was Aaron Francis. Pretty sure the Colac Thirds would have beaten us. Well done to the Power for not missing out on the easy kill.
Dogs v Saints, Sunday night: Bittersweet for the Dogs… sweet seeing Bontempelli back and playing like he never left, bitter seeing the nasty injury to Darcy. Great news that it isn’t an ACL though. What a revolting night for the Saints. They looked fairly evenly matched with the Dogs before the game but they were blown away from the get-go.
Cats v Hawks, Monday arvo: An Easter Monday thriller! Crazy that these two sides are still churning out epic chapters in this rivalry after the better part of two decades. Bloody hope they meet in the finals. The Hawks had their chances but the home ground advantage for The Melbourne Cats at the MCG proved critical in getting them over the line late.
