Mids will be the first ones picked, no doubt. Reallistically we can't expect Swanny to pump out a 130+ av again so i see about 8 players in the 120 to 110 range and about a dozen in the 110 to 100 range in the mids. In the first 2 draft rounds you're going to get 1 of each. However, the best backs, rucks and forwards would then become pot luck in your draft order. Will you bump anyone up your draft order to nab them before anyone else or maybe take some smokeys you see as going to break out, or under priced premos to bolster the squad?

I still dont really understand the game. So we get to pick 18 in a draft style game. Then when the season starts you get points for those players?

do you get trades or what?

Yes you do Get a Trading Period of Two days I think. :thumbsu:

So its basiacally who doesnt get the most injuries through the year that wins?

or 2 days every week? Are we allowed to trade to players that people already have or just others?

I believe you can make as many trades as you want between other players in the league. Assuming it's the same as Dreamteam pro last year that is. You can also drop/add new players that haven't been drafted at any stage if rolling lockout is chosen by the league creator.

Does it have to be Head to Head...Or can you choose a rotisserie scoring format based on categories... Like the Yahoo NBA format ??

Surely there are unlimited trades and unlimited moves with picking up players off waivers ??

In my league I'm using my first 2 rounds to go for 2 top mids then a top back/forward with my next 2 (unless there is a steal that has slipped through)

I'm no expert though and so this is tough coming up with a strategy will see how I go

In my experience on other drafting sites, the top rucks/backs forwards will get bumped up the draft lists vs mids. This does depend on the format but there is obviously no point taking a mid that averages 95 in the fifth round if you have selected four mids with your first four picks, when there is a ruck or forward available who averages 85.

Its all about balance and being flexible, working out approximately where your best smokies are likely to be drafted to make sure you get them. There is allways the temptation to hoard midfielders since it is lkely that 95% of the time, the next best player based on 2012 average score will be a mid.

I also notice that ruckmen tend to go in bunches - its like once one or two are picked then everyone panics and grabs one earlier than they probably should! If you are in a 8 or 10 team league you should be confident that you will be a serviceable ruckman without having to reach too far for one

I think you just have to take the best available though. You need some kind of list that is numbered 1-200 of the top scorers as a quick reference and cross them off as you go.

Something like this from 2011 :http://www.elitesportsnews.com.au/?/m/rankings/i/14443/t/dt/s/0/start/3

Two rounds thats 36 players right? But in above link there is a few players who's projected average are higher than the first 36 midfielders - Franklin, Cox, Goodes, Goddard, Scotland etc so you might miss someone like Franklin if you just think MID, MID the first two rounds?

The easiest way without projections is probably to just get the top 200 averages from 2012 and change the list in order of importance and who you think can improve can move up the list. Then you know exactly what your next selection will be and you wont be freaking out and madly grabbing someone like Higgins because you got flustered! I believe you only get something like 50 seconds to make a decision and I think a list would help immensley.

I think a very important mindset to have will be calculating the differences between different positions

Being brave and grabbing gibbs in defence over taking that 14th or 15th best midfielder and things like that. (just random examples havn't crunched any numbers or looked at any lists as of yet)

As is the case with dreamteam, good ruckman are always hard to come by and often are getting rested/injured etc so would it be worth locking down your top choice earlier and sacrificing a few avg points on a midfielder knowing that during the season you will make it up when other players with less consistent ruckmans miss out.

Just trying to think through the mindset really which is what it will come down too. I thought there would be a lot more interest in this new fantasy game then dreamteam given how shit dreamteam is these days (and is only going to be worse) with two teams having 2 or 3 players different to each other.

In my Elite league, i have picks 1, 16, 17 and 32 as my first 4 picks, after drafting the midfielders first, will you guys be looking to start drafting ruckman or forwards around picks 3 and 4, or would you rather get 4 premium midfielders and then work from there down?

You obviously take Swan or Ablett with your first pick, but after that I wouldn't be locked into any position. It is all about flexibility.

If it rolls around to pick 16 and there is still a Cox, Gibbs, Franklin etc available, it would be a no brainer to take one of them. With only 8 teams in your league, I wouldn't worry regarding ruckman though, there should be plenty available in the later rounds.

If you can get a Gibbs or Goddard with pick 16/17, then I would seriously look at that. Defender depth is poor and you already have a midfielder that is 15% better than most peoples captain.

I can't help but feel that captains are going to ruin this game given how much better the best players (swan/ablett) are compared to the rest.

Thats what the draft order is for
Assuyming you do the "sane" reverse draft order set upJust quickly picks would be SOMETHING along the lines of

1)Swan
2)Ablett
3)Pendlebury
4)Boyd
5)Cotchin
6)Beams
7)Watson
8)Murphy
9)Thompson
10)Stanton
11)Deledio
12)JPK
13)Mitchell
14)Dangerfield
15)Tuck
16)Redden

1st Pick vs 8th Pick would be

Swan & Redden v Murphy & Thompson

1st vs 5th Pick would be

Swan & Redden vs Cotchin & JPK

I think its fairly even, yes they have an advantage but its not massive, and you can make up for it with better picks later in the order.

I think id prefer picks 1,2,3,7,8,4,5,6
in that order.. the middle of the range picks are kind of meh there are positives at either end.

Yea i see what you mean, I guess we will see. I get the impression that the reverse draft order evens it out for normal scores but not when you throw captains in the mix but only time will tell.

Much more importantly, how has everyone gone about deciding their draft order. This could even be worthy of it's own thread. It has to be something funny, creative and most of all even for everyone. Me and my mates are still brainstorming. It is definitely the hardest decision of this whole process

Just let the site randomise it for you? Fairest way to go.

We did a semi-serious draft for our Freo board league a few days ago, here's how the picks panned out (we had about 4 guys on autopick):

1. Swan
2. Fyfe
3. Ablett
4. Beams
5. Pendlebury
6. Cothchin
7. Boyd
8. Goddard
9. Sandilands
10. Watson
11. Thompson
12. Franklin
13. Murphy
14. Cox
15. Deledio
16. Dangerfield
17. Pavlich
18. Sidebottom
19. SJ
20. Gibbs
21. Stanton
22. Tuck
23. Joel Selwood
24. Swallow
25. Rockliff
26. Shuey
27. Reddan
28. Kennedy
29. Robinson
30. McIntosh
31. Maric
32. Jack
33. Barlow
34. Mitchell
35. Ward
36. Bartel

Obviously Fyfe would never go at 2 and Pav went earlier than most leagues, but other than that I think it's a pretty fair representation of what would go down.

Yea that is the fairest, but it's also boring haha. I was just putting it out there incase some people on here had done some really cool things to decide the draft order.

E.g. one league I heard of, for each batsman in one of Australia's test match innings they had to guess they're score and the closest would get the 1st pick that round and so on. That's pretty risky though I would probably only do it for the first round picks and then let the reverse draft order do it's thing to ensure some fairness at least.

Whatever we decide in the end I want that 1st or 2nd pick.
