Gent's and Ladies,
I'm a displaced Yank, married to an Aussie, living in Sydney and just loving Aussie Rules, Barbi's, Meatpies, Ute's, and Manly Beach!
Having lived around the world (most recently in Tokyo), I can honestly say that Oz is the best place I've ever been, although I wish those bloody Aborigines would just "go home" (that's a joke). Anyway, after living in Thailand, Spain, Germany, throughout the U.S., and Japan, anyone who doesn't love this place should go home or leave.
My first exposure to Aussie Rules was with my mate Ricey, who happens to be Dean Rice's nephew (of Carlton), so I'm a Blues fan, but mostly due to the fact that I know more of their players, i.e. Fev, Kouta, Lappin, Marc Murphy, Witnall, etc. But actually I'm more of a footy fan in that I just want to watch a competitive game .
Being an outsider, I find Aussie Rules a combo of all of my favorite sports: Grid Iron, NBA, and NHL. In no other sport do you have to run around, get smashed, get up, kick, handball, take a speckie, and keep running around. I know 99% of NBA players would quit on the 1st day, and American Footballers have nowhere near the fitness off the least fit Aussie Rules player. The Hockey-like hits are done without pads, and no line shifts, as they have in the NHL.
To cut to the chase, that was my blab, and shout outs to Michito Sasaki (I "played" -hahaha, if you can call it that) against him as a deeeeeeep reserve Tokyo Goanna when he was on the Samurai's. And cheers to the Tokyo Goanna's, the best bunch of blokes in the far east, as well as Smokin' Pete, the best bloke and bar owner (the ClubHOuse in Shinjuku, the home of Aussie Rules and the Tokyo Goannas) in Japan, not to mention current coach.
Cheers,
-Macca
