Glitch where opposition full back stood in goal square and wouldn't kick the ball out from a kick in after a point ---> been found and fixed - will probably be in the patch (if there is going to be such a thing)

Whoever said that if you save a season game on hard level and when you re-load it is on medium difficulty and you can't change it -> once you play the first game of the season, difficulty remains the same for the rest of the season, and so the only place in the game where you actually see your season difficulty setting is before the 1st season game. So I'm not quite sure how you can tell, according to your story, that after you loaded the game the difficulty was Medium all of a sudden.

About commentary being barebones... there are no comments for the scores higher than 35 goals/35 behinds, so if you are winning by huge margins you're not likely to hear the scoreboard (apart from "team is leading by a HUGE margin!")

About finals series game Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn being played at Sydney Cricket Ground -> the information regarding appropriate venues for finals games from week 2 onwards (except for Grand Final) hasn't been finalised at the time and hence you'll probably notice that one of the Preliminary finals will always be played at SCG, while the other is at the MCG if I recall correctly.

About kicking into the goal post and still being awarded a goal -> I've never seen it myself, could someone who witnessed it describe to me exactly what happened in more detail... i.e. did the umpire signal the goal post being touched, the ball bounced back after hitting the post, commentator said "would you believe it, it hit the post"? If someone could find a way to replicate it, would be much appreciated

About tackling a player over the goal line and then umpire calling a player for throwing the ball -> what exactly are the AFL rules with regards to that? If someone is tackled over the boundary line, don't umpires wait for the tackle to be completed before deciding what happened? And in the example given, if I tackled my opponent over the goal line and he threw the ball, I'd much rather prefer to have a set shot at goal from directly in front instead of a behind being awarded! :)

With out of bounds on the full, the player who kicked the ball out on the full is the one who becomes the man on the mark - if there's going to be patches, this will be changed so that the closest player to the boundary point where ball crossed it will be man on the mark. Not sure what the AFL rules say about having to have a man on the mark. During Grand Final on several occasion we saw man on the mark missing.

About the incident where there was a ball-up, two human controlled players missed the tap and then nobody could pick the ball up -> could you please describe this in more detail... so after umpire the released the ball and it hit the ground, nobody touched it? If it could be replicated, would be much appreciated

Complaint about never being able to kick to a player on the lead and always ending up with contested mark scenario - this is due to the limited number of kick types (as you would have probably noticed), and insufficient variety in angles.

On the topic of kick-in

Before I forget, I think if you keep your players a reasonable distance away from the computer player who is doing the kick-in after a behind, there should be no problems with the player freezing up and just standing there.

I can answer this one. There are two main reasons you can tell that the difficulty level has changed back:

- The game is alot easier, and you win by 100+ points..

- The marking HUD thing appears when you are going for a mark, where as when the level is difficult, it does not appear.

Running into goal, kick it...the ball hits the post and goes flying back over your head......umpire signals goal, and only goal!! It also shows the ball hitting the post in the replay. Has happened more than once, but replicating it at will would be near impossible I would believe.

Not sure of the rule, but once you are over the line, surely you can't be tackled to the ground and then be called for throwing. I would much rather have a shot for goal too, but this happened in a human v human game, and it is not fair on 1 of the players. Sure, against the computer no one would argue.

What about the fact that they wait for the ruckmen to get into position before bouncing the ball around the ground? This is highly annoying and takes a while sometimes. A couple of times, my ruckman had been injured in the last few plays, and hadn't been taken off the ground yet....then the ball gets kicked down the ground and needs to be bounced, it took him nearly 1-2 minutes to hobble along down there.

Hope that helps. Oh, and if you are in any way related to the making of this game, please let us know as there are a lot of other things we would like to discuss!;)

First of all, what platform are you playing the game on?

Regarding difficulty: I was kinda hoping to get a more solid proof than "you win by 100+ points", because I figured a person would quickly get better at the game and thus the change in performance doesn't necessarily mean the change in difficulty level :) I've started a season yesterday on Hard difficulty, played one game, saved it, then quit the game, started the game, loaded saved game and it was still on Hard difficulty. Will try again though (will check whether Mark hud appears, as you've mentioned)

Which post did the ball hit, goal post or behind post - when umpire signalled a goal? I have no problems replicating the ball hitting the goal post but am yet to see a goal being the result. How far away were you from the goals when ball was kicked, and how far up the post did the ball hit it?

Regarding tackles over the line... tackle begins while both players are inside the boundary (if that wasn't the case, and the ball player crossed the boundary first, then it would have been a behind/throw in). So, it is a bit difficult to distinguish between a tackle which started right near the boundary and the tackle which started a metre away from it but the player got pushed over the boundary as a result. I think we should find out what the AFL rules are on the matter, before progressing any further in this discussion.

The issue with having to wait for ruckmen to get their lazy butts half way across the field has been fixed now. If there's going to be a patch, the fix will be included.

P.S. Who is the 'us' you're referring to, when you say that you have a lot of other things to discuss? :)

RussianDevil.. have you heard of the error with monitors?

I can install afl live 2003 fine, and then when I try to play it, the intro movies work fine, until it starts loading up the menu screen.

When the menu screen loads up, the monitor starts jumping, like it is set on a resolution that is too big for the monitor.

I am able to get into the graphics menu (by trying to decipher what the text says) and change the res to 640*480 16bit, but that still does nothing.

I've got an xp1800, matrox g400 32mb, and 384mb RAM and a 15" monitor.

I think it's a refresh rate issue... I've never had this problem with any other game before, I also know of others who are having this prob.

Very annoying.

I've got a question:

Russian Devil, How come you have posted about 5 times and yet your post count still says '0'??

I think it doesn't get updated till the database refreshes it self.

PS2

The only solid proof is the marking HUD, and the fact that you begin to win all the marking contests around the ground, hitouts etc... where as in the hard mode they are usually 50/50.

First time it hit the left goal post, second time it was the right. This I think only occurs on the run (I have only seen it happen on the run) and not in the set shot mode. The ball usually hits around half way up the post.

That is good - for PC users!!

Nah, just the fact that there is a lot of good ideas that could be incorporated into the next version. Especially the use of season stats throughout the season mode: Leading Goalkickers, possessions, marks, etc...

There are a few other good threads with ideas on the computer board.

Yeah, not sure how bugs are going to be fixed for PS2/XBox.

With the goal after kicking goal post, what kind of angle were you having a shot from? I'm guessing if the angle is fairly tight it would be possible for some part of the ball to cross the goal line before hitting the goal post. Hmm looking at it now.

All the good ideas/suggestions for improvement that have been posted around the boards have been read by us and taken into consideration. Your feedback is much appreciated. I'm a bit of a stats person myself you know :)

After some testing I can confirm that yep there appears to be a bug where difficulty setting remains at whatever value it was, when the saved game is loaded. So if you start a season on a Hard level, play one game, save the game, then play a Single game on Easy level, then load the saved season game, you will be playing on Easy level. Damn those testers who haven't found this one! :)

i don't think you even need to play another game on different level of difficulty. it still changes back to normal.

Yeah, unfortunately I think you are right. Perhaps try playing (Or even just starting then quitting) a game on Hard, then reload your season....see if it is back to the hard level? Hope so.

When you run AFL Live, the settings (such as difficulty) are loaded once at the start. So if you start a season, set difficulty to Hard, play a game, then save it and then go to Single game then difficulty will still be Hard, until you go to Game Setup menu and change it. Settings are saved (at least I'm sure that's the case on the PC version I'm using) when you quit the game altogether.

Refresh rate

Suggestion I just received on the Refresh rate issue... from Start menu, run dxdiag, then in More Help tab, select Override, and then specify Override value of 50-60. Give that a go and let me know if it helped.

Well I didn't come up with the solution myself but I'll pass your thanks to the appropriate person. :) Glad you're enjoying the game. All feedback is welcome.

I finally gave into temptation and bought the game a few days ago. And for the first time in a long time, I didn't care how half-finished the product seemed (compared to an EA-esque standard of polish), because it was just so cool to play Aussie Rules on the PC! :D I really hope there is a sequel, because 2003 sets an excellent foundation for future versions. The engine per se is great for simulating football, it's mainly stuff like the commentary and lack of options that weaken the game (no I'm not quite at the all-conquering-oh-my-god-its-just-too-easy stage yet ;))

The one basic thing I have found annoying so far is the controls. Am I the only one who finds the keyboard a little sluggish to respond?

This is compounded occasionally by the computer's insistence on going through certain animation motions. Typical of this is when I take a mark and want to play on, sometimes I find I play on a little later than "immediately" and the game insists on making my player pivot and stop in his tracks before it lets me take off again. In the mean time I've been tackled and pinged for holding the ball.

But as I say, I'll still play the game. Repeatedly :p

AFL Live channel

As of 9am this morning (4th October) I've established an AFL Live channel on mirc, on Dalnet server. (download mirc at www.mirc.com, once connected type in /join #AFL_Live to join the channel). I'm likely to be there quite a lot so feel free to drop by if you want to voice your comments somewhere other than the forum, perhaps we can discuss a few things related to the game.
